I am a 22 year old female, I got my regular mensuration on 11th June & I took a birth control pill on 21st June & then suddenly I got my periods today (26th June). My normal cycle is between 28 to 30 days. Is this sudden period normal? What could be the reasons for it? I'm worried.

After 5 days of the i-pill I faced some white discharge for a while. And now from the past 3 days I have been having symptoms like tender breast, cramps and withdrawl bleeding and yesterday I started getting back ache. My next periods are due on 5th. I am really worried that I might be pregnant. Please help me. And I know that a test would be of no use till 5th. I am very worried about myself. What do I do?

You need to have a regular cycle while using the calendar method. It works best when you have a 28 to 30 days cycle. You need to opt for the artificial measures if your periods are irregular. You can opt for oral contraceptives in this case or may use a barrier method. The calendar method shall also be effective in case your period lasts for less than 28 days. Take a calendar and pencil the dates which are safe and those which are not. This is the best way to track your infertile and fertile days. You need not calculate manually and keep in mind the days when you had unprotected sex. Make sure to track your period pattern for at least a year so that you can establish a pattern. Keep a note of the start and the end date of your cycle. You can use the rhythm method when you have the basic pattern right. Mark the first day of your cycle and count days until the next cycle starts. Your safe days are 8 days before beginning of your next cycle. The 9th to the 18th day is said to be the most unsafe as you start ovulating at this time. It is better to avoid sexual intercourse at this time if you don? t want to get pregnant. You must be careful of the sexually transmitted disease at this time, as the calendar method does not protect from the disease in any way.

Lower abdomen dull ache and back pain may be normal unless you don't have other signs of labour like uterine contractions and watery discharge from vagina. Keep a watch on your baby movements. Labour can start after 37 weeks anytime so please be careful.

My normal periods date is 15th of every month. I got my periods on 15th of August. I had unprotected sex on 20th August midnight. He ejaculated inside so I took ipill on 22nd August late in evening. After that I had a breakthrough bleeding from 29th August to 4th September which can be effect of ipill. This time I didn't get my periods on 15th September. I took a self pregnancy test on 23rd September. The result is negative. But I am worried about why I am not getting normal periods. Is my menstrual cycle got changed because of consumption of ipill? Should I take a pregnancy test again after a week or so?

Hello, an i-pill contains levonorgestrel 1.5 mg, a progestogen which helps prevent the implantation of the egg in the uterus and avoids the beginning of pregnancy. -pill can work in any of the two different ways depending on where you may be in your menstrual cycle. It may stop an egg being released from the ovary. If an egg has been released, i-pill may prevent the sperm from fertilizing it. You should know that after you take levonorgestrel, it is normal for your next menstrual period to begin up to a week earlier or later than expected. So, not to worry about getting pregnant or irregular menses, relax! wait for next 1 or 2 menses for getting normal menstrual cycle again.

Hi lybrate user, this bleeding can be due to ipill, as ipill is not 100%effective in preventing pregnancy, wait till her periods, if she misses her period do a urine pregnency test and confirm.

Take green vegetables like spinach, methi, cabbage, bhindi, carrots. Take milk or dahi twice daily-. Include dal, chana, rajma that are rich sources of proteins in your diet. Also take fruits as evening or afternoon snacks- bananas, apples, pears, guavas. Also I would recommend a health drink like proteinex once daily.

Rubela is not the reason for not conceing. It only means you had infection. Its effect on foetus is variable. If it is active infection then can lead to abortion.

How to Know When You are Ovulating?

MICOG, MS, MBBS

How to Know When You are Ovulating?

Most women stay confused with the time of their ovulation. Couples who are sexually healthy and are in their 20s and 30s and are not using any birth control measures have 20% chances of getting pregnant. It is interesting to know that you have a high chance of getting pregnant at the time of ovulation. It is a small window period that comes each month. It is the time when your ovary produces ovum or egg and the egg is open for fertilisation. Even if you are having sex two or three days before ovulation, there is a high possibility of fertilisation. After ovulation is over, the window period gets shut for the next cycle. It is the safe period. Though doctors say that it cannot be considered 100% safe to have unprotected sex during this period, the chances of getting pregnant are considerably lower.

When does ovulation actually start?
It should be remembered that ovulation takes place at the middle of your menstrual cycle. It usually occurs halfway through the cycle. Commonly, the average time period of a cycle is 28 days. But, in some cases, women may have cycles as long as 23 to 35 days.

How will you know that you are ovulating?

  1. Check your calendar: It is a healthy habit to keep a menstrual calendar. You must maintain the dates for a few months. This will give you an idea as to when you actually ovulate.It is difficult to know the actual time of ovulation if you are having irregular periods.
  2. Carefully listen to your body: It is a common thing that your body spontaneously sends a memo to you before ovulation starts. You get cramps or feel pain in the lower abdomen before ovulation starts. This pain is called mittelschmerz. It is a reminder of the coming periods.
  3. Chart your body temperature: Well, you will need to keep a record of your basal body temperature. You can measure it after three to five hours of sleep. Your basal body temperature changes throughout the monthly ovulation cycle. Progesterone hormone is responsible for the increase in body temperature. In the first half of the month, the progesterone levels are low and hence the temperature remains low as compared to the second half of ovulation.
  4. You can go for saliva test: Your saliva contains the estrogen hormone. Its level changes throughout the cycle. You can also use an ovulation detector kit to know the dates. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a doctor and ask a free question.

Ayurved - Science of Centuries For Centuries

Ayurveda (ayush=life; vid=wisdom-sanskrit) is said to be the most ancient of medical systems. The ancient vedic tradition, cognized by the great indian seers, offers a wealth of knowledge for healthy and meaningful life. 1 since ayurveda (part of atharvaveda, the last of the four vedas) is timeless and unbounded it has relevance even to the present day. It was mark twain who once said: so far as I am able to judge, nothing has been left undone, either by man or nature, to make india the most extraordinary country that the sun visits on his rounds. Nothing seems to have been forgotten, nothing overlooked.

The philosophy of ayurveda believes that everything in this universe is composed of five elements, the panchbhootas. They, in turn, constitute the three doshas or bio-energetic forces that govern our health and determine our constitution. The trigunas or psychic forces determine our mental and spiritual health. Ayurveda teaches us to balance all these to live a healthy, happy and contented life.

Unlike modern medicine, ayurveda recognizes that the mind and body are but the two manifestations of the same consciousness-mind as the field of ideas and the body as the field of molecules and organs. Each tries to help keep the other working and healthy extracting nourishment from the environment. Elimination of impurities of the emotional wounds are as important as the elimination of the waste matter from the body to have true physical, emotional and spiritual health.

Modern risk factor hypothesis pales into insignificance in view of the most elaborate knowledge in ayurveda. Some of the recent additions to the modern medical list like hostility form the basis of the ayurvedic risk factors. Viz.

Khrodha, shoka, bhaya, aayaasa, virudhaanna bhojana,

Thaponnalaan, lavanakshara, rakta pitta prakopayeth

(anger, depression and sorrow, extreme fear, exhaustion, wrong foods, sedentary living, too much salt and spices lead to most major killer diseases)

The solution is also simple:

nithya hitha, mitha aahaara sevi, sameekshkaari, dhata samaha sathyapara

Kshamavaan aapthopasevi aarogyam.

(have food in moderation and that which pleases the mind. Do not cheat or tell lies. Work very hard. Forgive others even if they hurt you. Treat all as your own kith and kin. Health would be yours always.) 2

Vedic wisdom follows non-linear mathematics (vedic mathematics) and the laws akin to modern quantum physics. It is, therefore, the right approach for holistic assessment of health and disease. Its aims are not only to heal the sick, but also to preserve life by preventing illness-most complete system of health care known. 2

Ayurvedic treatment is based on restoring the disturbed balance of the three doshas-vata, pitta, and kapha - very much like the humors theory of hippocrates. It takes into consideration the whole human being, and not just the phenotype. The tridosha concept takes into consideration the phenotype, genotype as also the mind, in classifying patients. Consequently, treatment differs even for the same disease from individual to individual, based on the constitutional types.

Whereas billions of tons of water get displaced during the tidal changes in the oceans due to the gravitational pull of the moon, the human body, which is mostly water, could not be exempt from the effects of the planets. Ayurvedic astrology plays a large part in the total picture of disease and its cure. Many of us scientists who feel nauseated at the very mention of the word astrology would do well to know that isaac newton and gelileo were both practising astrologers. The science of astrology is good but not the astrologers predictions! most predictions, including the ones we make in scientific medicine, are just predicting the unpredictable.

Empirical knowledge, derived from long term prospective studies, form the basis of therapy in ayurveda, unlike the short term case-control studies or, even, cohort studies based on matching the controls, based on phentotypical features alone, as is done in modern medicine. Treatment is tailored to individual needs and could be broadly grouped into the following:

* detoxification-panchakarmas
* diet
* yoga
* herbal medications
* meditation and prayer (no particular god or book prescribed)

Anal tissue or lining is not very elastic, and is prone to injuries and pain. Also there is lot of bacterial colonization due to it bieng a fecal route. So unprotected sex brings with it higher risk of trnsfer of infections too.

Hello irregularities in menstrual cycle can be due to hormonal imbalance. Get her hormonal status and sonogram done to find out the reason for the problem. If everything is normal, regulation of periods can be done by medicines. Get your semen examination done simultaneously. Pregnancy is not a problem if everything is fine.
