The chikungunya virus is transmitted from human to human by the bites of infected female mosquitoes. Most commonly, the mosquitoes involved are aedes aegypti and aedes albopictus, two species which can also transmit other mosquito-borne viruses, including dengue and chikungunya. No vaccine exists to prevent chikungunya virus infection or disease. Prevent chikungunya virus infection by avoiding mosquito bites. The mosquitoes that spread the chikungunya virus bite mostly during the daytime.

M.Sc - Dietitics / Nutrition (Delhi University)
Dietitian/Nutritionist, Panipat
Nausea and Vomiting during Pregnancy!
Nausea (feeling like vomiting) and vomiting are common, especially during the early months of pregnancy.

Are there things I can do to make myself feel better?
There are many comfort measures to help pregnant women who suffer from nausea and vomiting during early pregnancy. Changes in diet, sleep pattern and lifestyle can help.

Few suggestions are given below:-

1. Changes in lifestyle
* Get up slowly from lying down position and do not lie immediately after eating.
* Keep your head higher than your feet when lying down.
* Go outside for fresh air as much as possible.
* Rest or nap often
* Dentify conditions which make vomiting worse, such as certain foods, odours, activities or stress and avoid them.
* Wait about half an hour after dinner to brush your teeth

2. Changes in diet

* Eat bland foods that are high in carbohydrates and low in fat such as toast, bread, rice, cereal, crackers and potatoes.
* Eat foods that are high in protein such as lean meat, eggs and dishes made with beans and pulses.
* Eat foods high in vitamin b6 like whole grains and cereals, wheat germ, nuts, seeds, legumes, corn
* Avoid greasy, fatty, fried and spicy foods.
* Drink 10-12 glasses of liquids such as coconut water, buttermilk, milk and fresh juices.
* Avoid excess of tea, coffee and aerated drinks
* Do not drink alcohol
* Try to eat every 2 to 3 hours, even if you are not hungry. Have small frequent meals than large meals.
* Have a snack such as yoghurt, milk or a small sandwich before going to bed.
* Sniffing lemon or ginger can sometimes relieve nausea.
* In case if you have nausea and vomiting in the evening, have a good meal in the morning and a light meal at night and vice versa.

When should I call my doctor?
Call your doctor right away if you:

* Have been vomiting for almost 24 hours.
* Have been stomach pain, fever, dizziness, severe weakness or feel faint.
* Have weight loss of more than 2-5 kgs.
* Have very dark yellow urine or do not urinate for long periods.
* Feel your mouth is dry and your hands and feet are cold.
* Feel very thirsty.
* Have a fast heartbeat.
* Vomit blood.

There is a thin membrane called'hymen' at the vagina which when ruptured during first sexual act indicates loss of virginity. Apart from sexual act, hymen can rupture in athletic women during activities like bicycle riding, horse riding or during activities which involve leg stretching. You can recall the past and you may be able to recall an instance, may b sports activity or something, when you might have had bleeding apart from your regular menses. May be that was an instance when your hymen was ruptured. It a matter of past now to trust a woman's purity by virtue of her'hymenal intactness' today's women are independent, strong and much more involved in sports activities. Trust between partners matters a lot. If you deny it, your partner should not doubt.

Asthma is defined as a chronic inflammatory condition of the lungs that may affect people of all age groups. There is no complete cure for the condition and treatment is mainly aimed at correcting the symptoms and avoiding the triggering agents.

Treatment of asthma has two aspects: management of acute attacks and long-term control or prevention. Conventional treatments are sometimes the best choices for acute attacks, where immediate relief can be a life-and-death matter.

Because of the age factor your mother cannot be treated aggressively. Pl follow the prescriptions given by your doctor. You may take a second opinion from another cardiologist if you have confusions. Homeopathy can be another option to be taken along with her regular treatment as it is safe and mild. It can increase her strength and vitality in a gentle manner. You can revert back to me if needed.

Hello. As your father is diabetic and diabetic patients are advised to keep taking small frequent meals after every 2 hours as there are chances of getting hypoglycemic when the blood sugar drops abruptly (the patient is also having to lower the blood sugar). So, at the time he is hungry, his low blood sugar causes perspiration. Tell him to carry candies in hand all the time.

For headache take tablet paracetamol 650 mg eight hourly and few things related to headache so that we can plan the treatment accordingly - if pain is associated with blurred or decreased vision than check your eye sight for refractive error - if the pain is associated with cold and fever than we have to rule out sinusitis as the cause and if the pain is pulsatile in nature and with a throbbing pain usually with an aura than we have to rule out migrane as the cause - if the pain is associated with neck problems than we have to rule out cervical spondylosis as the cause - if the pain is associated with either low or high bp or due to hyperacidity than we have to treat the cause after examination.

I want to know about detailed diet in jaundice. My sgpt is 1848. How can I bring it to normal level?

C.S.C, D.C.H, M.B.B.S
General Physician,
Initially you take fluids and then you have normal food reducing fat .FOODS TO AVOID Avoid spicy and fried foods. Avoid junk and carbohydrate rich foods as liver needs to produce more bile to digest these foods and that may aggravate the condition. Avoid alcohol, coffee and tea. Drink boiled water and avoid unpasteurized milk. Pulses and legumes should be avoided.
