Vaccines given in Govt sector (where I work) are essential to prevent major illnesses seen in children like polio, diphtheria, measles, tetanus, and rubella and other vaccines are called optional to prevent not so dangerous diseases. They are costly but can be given to protect from typhoid, diarrhoea, typhoid. Even if not given, you need not worry. If you can afford you give them as well.

My 2 months baby is not taking her mother milk, please guide how can we give her that?

My 2 months baby is not taking her mother milk, please guide how can we give her that?
Not taking mothers milk means the baby is getting other milk. You have to express the milk and give it with the help of sterile spoon. Do this every 2 hrs. Once the baby like the taste of your milk, he or she will go back to sucking at the nipple which will I turn increase milk secretion.

Healthy Habits Every Mother Should Teach Her Kids!

DHMS (Diploma in Homeopathic Medicine and Surgery)
Homeopath, Delhi

It’s not always easy to encourage your children to eat a balanced diet.

Eating breakfast, even if it’s just a banana and a glass of milk, kick-starts the body and makes it easier to maintain lasting energy throughout the day.

It’s easy to reach for chips or biscuits when you and your children feel like nibbling on something, but these snacks tend to be low in nutrients and high in calories.

Make water the drink of choice at meal times, and keep juice and sweet drinks as occasional treats.

You decide which foods to buy and when to serve them. Though kids will pester their parents for less nutritious foods, adults should be in charge when deciding which foods are regularly stocked in the house. Kids won’t go hungry.

While juice has valuable nutrients and gives a concentrated energy boost for active, growing bodies, kids should go for water first when they are thirsty, not sugar-sweetened drinks.

Kids should start eating Better not everything they get.

  • Start the day with a healthy breakfast.

  • Let kids help plan one meal each week and eat together as often as possible.

  • Eat slowly.

  • Eat more vegetables and fresh fruits.

  • Eat more whole grains (e.g., oats, brown rice, rye, crackers, whole-wheat pasta).

  • Drink plenty of fluids.

  • Serve a variety of foods.

Be a role model and eat healthy yourself.

When trying to teach good eating habits, try to set the best example possible.

Relax, nothing to worry. This is normal at this age. Instead concentrate on feeding, play with him and enjoy watching him grow.

Dear Doctor's My daughter is 18 months old but still her teeth are not growing. Is it a problem? Her weight is only 8.5 kg. Is she underweight? If yes what should we do? One local medical practitioner has suggested us to give her calcium. Should we buy calcium tablets? By the way she is spontaneous but does not like to eat anything. Please suggest.

It's delayed dentition, by now central and lateral incisors should have been erupted. It better to take opinion of paedodontist. Her weight is within normal range. Now you can very easily check the physical growth of the child yourself on IAP growth chart application (download from Google play) if it is in between 3-95 percentile, it is normal. The growth of the children depends on heridetory and familial factors apart from nutrition. For cultivating eating habits you need to take family meals along with the child so that child learns by imitation. Parents are role models for children. Forcing children to eat is futile and may backfire by becoming rebellious.

Thalassemia in Children - 4 Ways to Treat it!

MD - Paediatrics, MBBS
Pediatrician, Jaipur
Thalassemia in Children - 4 Ways to Treat it!

Thalassemia is a type of a disease, resulting in the abnormal production of hemoglobin in the blood. Hemoglobin stimulates oxygen circulation all over the body. Therefore, a dip in the hemoglobin count can lead to anemia, a disease inducing weakness as well as fatigue. Acute anemia can take a toll on the organs and ultimately cause death.

Severe thalassemia in children yields symptoms, such as dark urine, abdominal swelling, slow growth, jaundice, a pale appearance and deformed skull bones. Diarrhea, frequent fevers and eating disorders are also common.

Treatment:

  1. Blood transfusions: Regular blood transfusion is the only treatment needed for beta thalassemia aiming to keep sufficient Hb level to avoid long-term complications, though bone marrow transplant is radical cure for the disease.
  2. Iron chelation therapy: The hemoglobin in the red blood cells is rich in iron-protein that gets deposited in the blood with regular blood transfusion. This condition is known as iron overload as it damages heart, liver and various parts of the body. Iron chelation therapy is used to prevent this damage as it helps to remove the excess iron from the body.  Deferoxamine and Deferasirox are two such medicines used for this therapy.
  3. Folic acid supplements: Folic acid being a B vitamin produces healthy red blood cells and is therefore recommended as a substitute for the above procedures.
  4. Transplant of blood and marrow stem cell: A blood and a marrow (a substance within the cavities of bones where blood cells are produced) transplant replaces the faulty stem cells with healthy ones contributed by a donor.

Acute diarrhea is a disorder which leads to a person passing a number of watery stools. It may be accompanied by cramping pain in the abdomen and at times fever too. Food and water-borne bacteria, parasites and viruses cause such problems. Rapid loss of water in the form of watery stool can cause a situation known as dehydration which can disrupt the normal functioning of the body. Along with it, the essential salts (electrolytes) of the body are also lost. While the oral rehydration salts and fluids significantly reduce fatalities from dehydration, they do not treat the underlying infection that is causing diarrhoea. Homeopathic medicines Veratrum Album, Arsenic Album, Podophyllum lead the homeopathic table for treating diarrhoeas and provide quick relief to patients by eliminating the infection. You can easily take an online consultation for further treatment guidance and permanent cure without any side effects

Germs/bacteria are on our skin in millions - if we eliminate all germs from our body we would not survive more than a day.

It has very negligible amount in your breast milk. Your baby might be slightly lazy but its a transient effect, no long term side effects has been reported. Therefore, You may continue to breast fed your baby. If you are much concerned.
