I am 50 years old. My hearing in the right ear was suddenly impaired resulting in vertigo. Ent specialists have diagonised the impairment due to minier's decease, which causes accumulation of liquid in the inner ear. They also say that their is no cures. My hearing in the right ear is 50 percent with higher frequencies muted. My hearing in the left ear has become 20per ent higher than normal. Kindly advise for any resolution.

MBBS
General Physician, Delhi
First thing you need to do is reduce your sodium intake, quit smoking and reduce your tea and coffee intake. Next is, you may take tab. Meclozine. It will help you. Intra-tympanic steroid injection has shown to have some benefit. Surgical correction can also be done, but it is always associated with some degree of hearing loss.

Hi Dear Doctor I am mohan (29 yrs) from Bangalore. I need permanent solution for the snoring that I have too much. I do not disturb others at bed time. What kind of solution is better. I think I am having mouth snoring. Kindly give your support.

DORL, MBBS
Ear-Nose-Throat (ENT) Specialist, Faridabad
Surgery is the only solution for this snoring comes from the soft palate when there is fat deposition in it or it becomes so thinned out that it flutters, this is called snoring, snoring is directly related to your unhealthy life style, as this is mainly due to alcohol intake, excess of fat diet, fried spicy or salty diet in excess causes soft palate enlargement this in turn leads to snoring and lack of sleep in the lying down position, start exercising and reduce your weight and start healthy life style. Do not take it lightly as this is directly related to decreased oxygen supply to vital organs mainly the heart hence snoring patients are very prone to get heart attack at very early age, get the sleep study done as early as possible this will show the ah index value on the basis of that the treatment will be given.

I am 55 year old female. I am suffering from throat pain for two months. My voice reduces. What should I do?

D.N.B, D.L.O
Ear-Nose-Throat (ENT) Specialist, Bangalore
Hello for throat pain you should do warm water gargling 3-4 times a day, avoid oily and curds. If there has been a voice change you likely might have had infection of your voice box we call it laryngitis. You have to give voice rest and do steam inhalation. If still persists need medications

All About Nosebleeds

MS - ENT, MBBS
ENT Specialist, Delhi
All About Nosebleeds

Nosebleed is a condition wherein blood vessels burst in the nasal lining. Nosebleeds are fairly common and it is rarely a serious condition.

  1. Anterior nosebleed: It is caused by the eruption of a blood vessel at the tip of the nose. Anterior nosebleeds are generally easy to control by yourself or by a doctor.
  2. Posterior nosebleed: It is a rare type of nosebleed. Posterior nosebleed mostly occurs in older people. It occurs when an artery bursts behind the nose, which causes the blood to flow down the throat. Posterior nosebleeds are, thus, dangerous, and they need immediate medical attention.

Causes:

  1. There are numerous causes of nosebleeds. The most common cause of nosebleeds is dry air. Dry climates dehydrate the nasal membranes (internal nasal tissues). This dryness leads to crusting which can cause irritation or itching.
  2. Also, if you pick or scratch your nose too much, it can start to bleed.
  3. Decongestants for allergies, sinus infection or cold and antihistamines can make the nasal membranes dry and cause nosebleeds as well.

Some other causes of nosebleeds include:

  1. Some sort of foreign object stuck in the nasal cavity
  2. Allergic reactions
  3. Repeated sneezing
  4. Nose injuries (For example, car accidents, a punch to the face, etc.)
  5. Chemical irritants
  6. Cold air
  7. Respiratory Infection
  8. Consuming high doses of aspirin-high dosage thins the blood down, thus triggering nosebleeds

There are other rarer causes as well, such as:

  1. High blood pressure
  2. Bleeding disorder
  3. Blood clotting problems
  4. Cancer

Treatment: A nosebleed can easily be treated at home. While in a sitting position, close your nostril by squeezing the soft part of your nose. Hold your nose for ten minutes, then lean slightly forward. Inhale and exhale slowly using your mouth.

Never lie down when you are trying to stop a nosebleed, as you will end up swallowing the blood which can upset your stomach. Remove your hand from your nose after 10 minutes and check if the bleeding has stopped. If it has not, repeat the steps all over again.

However, consult a doctor if the bleeding does not stop or if there is a foreign object stuck in your nose.

If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a doctor.

If stenosis involve small segment then end to end anastomosis is possible. Better to consult a thoresic surgeon at a good centre.

Diploma in Otorhinolaryngology (DLO), MBBS

Once the nasal blockage clears, gradually your sense of smell will recover, as the olfactory mucosa is responsible for perceiving smell. It might take 2 to 4 weeks.

I am 21 years old male. And having pain in TMJ region. The pain start in 2012 and the treatment also going on. My dentist start treatment with braces in my teeth and also gave a plate which I used to wear in mouth for at least 10 hours. But yet I do not hve relief from this pain. Due to tgis disorder I feel so much pain in ear especially at winters. please doctors give me best suggestion.

MDS - Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery
Dentist, Chennai
Kindly consult an Oral & maxillofacial surgeon in person for further suggestion. We need more investigations (full mouth x-ray, TMJ open & closed mouth) & clinical examination to decide upon treatment. Until then have soft diet. Replace posterior teeth if they are missing. Advise mouth opening exercise & side to side movement for the jaw muscles or the use of anti-inflammatory medicines and painkillers. For people who grind their teeth or clench their jaw, a bite-appliance may be made which corrects the way in which the jaw works and reduces the stresses and loads on it. This can be disposed of when normal function is restored. As oral & maxillo-facial surgeon, may be required to perform surgery on the TMJ.

I have been suffering from sinus since 2 years. So, in order to reduce my headache I applied zandu balm on my forehead. After a year I noticed that part of my forehead turns to black completely. Please can anyone tell me how can I remove that color?

BHMS
Homeopath, Chennai
Of all the possible holistic or alternative treatments available, Chronic Sinusitis stands the best chance of being cured by Homeopathy. This has been my personal first hand experience as a homeopathic doctor as well as the experience of hundreds of patients of sinusitis who got cured by Homeopathy. The Homeopathic treatment of sinusitis is far superior as it does not resort to any strong medicines or antibiotics. The homeopathic medicine for sinusitis is mild and has the additional benefit that it does not cause any side effect at all. In fact, it strengthens the immunity of the patient and helps in fighting other infections also. You can easily take an online consultation for further treatment guidance

I haven't been able to sleep properly. Either my right or left side of my nose gets blocked. Any quick suggestions to avoid such problems. Thanks in advance.

PDDM, MHA, MBBS
General Physician, Nashik
1. Avoid caffeine found in coffee, tea, chocolate, cola, and some pain relievers.[four to six hours before bedtime.] 2. Quiet, dark, and cool environment can help promote sound sleep. [use heavy curtains, or an eye mask to block light, and also keeping computers, tvs, and other work materials out of the room will help promote mental bonding between your bedroom and sleep] 3. Avoid stressful, stimulating activities like doing work, discussing emotional issues. Physically and psychologically stressful activities can cause the body to secrete the stress hormone cortisol, which is associated with increasing alertness.
