Balanced Diet and Maintaining Good Health

MBBS, Ph.D. Alternative medicine
Alternative Medicine Specialist, Patiala
Balanced Diet and Maintaining Good Health

Dietary patterns have undergone significant changes over the last few decades. These included more fatty foods, refined foods, and processed foods findings their way into people’s diet. These changes have further led to a lot of dietary diseases including hypertension, hypercholesterolemia, constipation and obesity.

With these on the rise, there is also awareness of the need to eat a balanced diet for overall well-being. What is important is that it is not just about what is being eaten. Alternative medicine offers a lot of options through which a person can train his mind and body to eat in a balanced manner and avoid diet-induced diseases. Here how to maintain good health:

  1. Yoga: There are specific asanas in yoga which are directed at the digestive system. While some help you control appetite, there are others which can help improving digestion by stimulating digestive juices, improving absorption, and preventing fat accumulation. The breathing control which is brought through yoga is one of the best ways to improve overall health, as each and every cell is stimulated. In addition, overall, yoga is a very good form of exercise and helps in overall improved levels of activity.

  2. Aromatherapy: There are strong indications that smell can help in curbing hunger. So, when a person is hungry, even the smell of food can lead to satiety. This is another way to control hunger. In addition, a lot of aromas are also aimed at improving overall well-being and maintaining health.

  3. Natural medicine: There are various herbs starting from ginger, garlic, cloves, etc. which are all regular ingredients in the kitchen. These have benefits which are time tested and help in controlling various ailments and promote health overall. These should find their way into the diet, which can help in maintaining good health.

  4. Music therapy: Stress is one of the major inducers of all diseases and affects overall health. Music is believed to be one of the most relaxing things and helps in controlling stress. It, therefore, improves overall health and maintains balance. In addition, specific music targets specific body systems, which a music therapist can prescribe.

  5. Massage: Using herbal oils for massage is another way to manage and control overall health. The herbal oils penetrate deep within the skin and the external pressure applied during massage helps in relaxing the muscles and joints. This again should help in improving blood circulation, controlling overall body pains, improve range of motion, and improve overall health.

  6. Hypnosis: As the adage goes, it is all in the mind. Most health issues, when deciphered, seem to have a strong psychological issue. This is where hypnosis has assumed great importance in improving overall health in the recent past, as emotional health is an equally important component of overall health. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a doctor.

Dear lybrate-user Since you have got married and not able to conceive since 2015 make sense for evaluation for causes of infertility. This includes a group of investigations which are decided after thorough clinical examination and history briefing. Fibroid in uterus "4 mm" is not at all significant cause for infertility. "Uterus going down" connotes that you might be suffering from uterovaginal prolapse. If that is the case the you need to get examined by your gynaecologist and let the concerned decide treatment according to the grading of prolapse. There are options available in the form of exercises, support pessaries, surgery. The surgery can be conducted laparoscopically for your problem.

If a woman is two months pregnant, then what should she not eat and how can she take care of her pregnancy and what should she do for her health?

The first trimester of your pregnancy is the most important phase. During this phase your body undergoes various physiological and psychological changes and your baby’s major organ developments also happen simultaneously. You need to exercise certain precautions during the first trimester to avoid any serious health complications. What you do during the initial three months defines the health and wellness of your baby and that of yours too. Here are things that you should do during this trimester to ensure a smooth ride ahead. Things to do during your first trimester: • Get your required number of calories from all food groups, not just fat! Include variety of foods in the diet like whole grains, pulses, legumes and nuts. Meat, poultry, eggs and fish also provide protein. Make sure you get your calcium from milk or other food. Take 600 ml of milk or milk products every day for the calcium content. Eating during pregnancy • Get your dose of vitamin D through food like egg yolks, tuna, salmon, fortified milk, fish liver oil, or through exposure to sunlight. • Increase your intake of omega-3 fatty acids. They are necessary for the development of your baby’s brain, nerve and eye. • Take iron and folic acid supplements as prescribed by your doctor. It is important during the pre-conception and early pregnancy phase because this is when the foetus develops spine and nerve cells. • Eat frequent, smaller meals. The baby needs to be fed constantly so eat every two to three hours. • Gain weight gradually. For the optimal growth of your baby you should gain around 0.5- 2 kg in the first trimester. Get some exercise. Regular gentle exercise can help ease or prevent back pain, boost your energy, build stamina and help you prepare for the physical changes of labour and delivery. • Don’t miss your visits to the doctor. Your prenatal check-ups are your window into the womb and they help detect any issues early and can be corrected in most cases. • Increase your fluid intake. Blood volume needs to increase during pregnancy to facilitate oxygen and nutrient delivery to both you and your baby. • Get lots of sleep. Hormonal changes also make you feel worn out. So make it a point to get few naps whenever possible. • Cut down on caffeine. Large amounts of caffeine consumption and an increased risk of miscarriage have been linked in some studies. Things to avoid on your first trimester • Don’t take any medication unless necessary. Medicines taken by you can cross the placenta and enter the bloodstream of your baby. Hence it’s best to know the safety of any medications you’re taking during pregnancy – especially in the first trimester. • Don’t be too adventurous with food. Foods to be avoided during pregnancy include raw/undercooked meat, soft cheese, seafood and raw eggs. They could be possible sources of harmful bacteria and parasite. Reduce your exposure to environmental pollutants. According to a study, women exposed to elevated levels of ozone air pollution (smog) in the first three months of pregnancy may be at increased risk for complications such as preeclampsia and premature birth. • Quit smoking. Passive and active smoking during pregnancy increases the risk of health and behavioural problems in the baby and is linked to infant mortality. • Don’t drink alcohol. Alcohol can cross the placenta and reach your baby’s bloodstream. Excessive drinking impairs the mental and physical development of your baby, in what is known as foetal alcohol syndrome. Don’t get stressed, depressed. High levels of stress can affect the unborn baby’s health and increase your chances of miscarriage. • Don’t go on diet while you’re pregnant. You may end up with deficiency of iron, folic acid, vitamins and minerals which can potentially harm you and your baby. • Don’t use hot tubs/ sauna. They can raise your core body temperature which can cause dehydration and threaten the developing baby.

I am not interested in having children. What alternatives to hysterectomy are available?
Hysterectomy is not a family planning method. There are various contraceptive methods like condoms, oral contraceptive pills injectable hormone etc. Those who have already had a child can go for intrauterine contraceptive device like copper t. Once family is complete permanent methods can be used.

Hello lybrate user- irregular menses might occur due to two causes, first if you have developed anaemia (low hb count) or you have experienced sudden gain in your weight occur in pcod (poly cystic ovarian disease). It will affect your ovulation and hence your fertility after marriage. Try this ayurvedic treatment- a) tab kuberaksha vati 1 tab twice daily. B) tab hyponid 1 tab thrice daily. C) do basti treatment by nearby ayurvedic doctor (it is a very effective treatment in ayurveda for pcod). D) maintain proper eating routine, avoid fast foods and spicy diet.
