I'm 18 year old boy. I had a CT scan recently. For my nasal polyp removal operation. I heard that one CT scan can expose radiation as 200 chest x-ray. Is it true ? Will it increase the possibility for cancer?

M.Ch - Surgical Oncology, MS - General Surgery, MBBS
Oncologist, Delhi
yes, the radiation exposure from one ct scan is many times to that of an xray. and it is also true that excessive radiation exposure can induce cancers. but there is also a limit ro radiation exposure in a year the body can ssfely tolerate. 1 or 2 ct scans done properly in a year for diagnosing a problem, do not increase your risk of developing cancer significantly. so don't worry.

Ear Pain - Can it Be a Sign of Infection?

MS - ENT
ENT Specialist, Nagpur
Ear Pain - Can it Be a Sign of Infection?

Ear infection is a disorder which can either be viral or bacterial, affecting one’s middle ear the most. This disorder is painful as fluid accumulates in the ear leading to inflammation. Infections of the ear can either be chronic or acute in nature, the damage is more prominent in case of chronic infections. Acute ear infections can be painful but they usually fade away in a few days’ time.

Symptoms
In case of an ear infection, you will experience pain in the ear. A pressure may develop in the ear accompanied by drainage of pus from the ears. Some severe cases might also lead to loss of hearing, be it temporary or permanent. The symptoms of ear infection may develop and affect both the ears. Fever during ear infections is another common auxiliary condition.

Causes
Ear infections tend to occur when the Eustachian tubes in the ear get blocked as a result of fluid accumulation in the ear. The Eustachian tubes can get blocked due to the following reasons –

  1. Being affected by allergies
  2. Conditions such as cold can lead to ear infection
  3. Problems in the sinuses
  4. Excessive smoking
  5. Infected adenoid glands

In addition to the causes, there are certain risk factors which can make one prone to ear infections, some of them being:

  1. Narrow Eustachian tubes in children increase the risks of ear infections
  2. Changes in climate and altitude
  3. Second hand exposure to cigarette smoke

Treatment
For mild symptoms, simple home remedies will suffice. A warm compress on the affected area can reduce the pain. Taking pain relieving medications such as ibuprofen can also help in reducing pain. For moderate symptoms, antibiotics may be required to treat the bacterial infection.
If other treatments do not work, then surgery may be required. Usually tubes are inserted in the ear to drain the accumulated fluid. If it involves the adenoid glands, then surgical removal of the adenoid glands may be required. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult an ent-specialist.

My daughter has recurrent ear infections, and the specialist wants to take out her tonsils and adenoids. I cannot see what connection there is between the tonsils and the ears. Is the specialist right? Should my daughter have the operation?

Ear, nose&throat (ent) are interconnected & thinking in terms of recurrent infection, tonsilitis, adenoids swelling & chronic discharge from ears if you remove tonsils &adenoids which are septic, there are chances of getting better of ear infectionafter operation. Ear operation (tympanoplasty) after the age of 21yrs. You may try other modalities immunotherapy, certain herbal therapy. High protein diet & supplements etc. Can help.

I am 22 years old. I have problem with severe headache may be it is migraine and getting a blood out from nose? What I should do now is there any medicine?

MBBS, MD Psychiatry, DNB Psychiatry

I am 22 years old. I have problem with severe headache may be it is migraine and getting a blood out from nose? What ...
Getting a nose bleed with headache is uncommon in migraine. It would be advisable that you consult a ent specialist, get your blood pressure checked up, get examined and investigated fro the possible causes and get the necessary treatment done. Getting headaches and having migraine are different issues. Every headache may not be migraine. Migraine is a relapsing type of headache. It is usually seen in females but may occur in males too. Management of migraine includes treatment for acute headaches and then treatment for prevention of future attacks of migraine. This is decided according to the onset, type, duration, severity of headaches and also the associated symptoms like sleep problems, stress, anxiety etc. In case of severe headache attacks you may take tab. Nazdom, one tablet only. For a detailed treatment plan consult a psychiatrist or headache specialist in person.

Sir, I am Suffering from cold Since a Year. I have Tried Many medicines like English Desi But its Not working much and I am 16 year old and my nose has also injured due to accident last month. Is that injury is the reason? Suggest me what should I do? Should I ask doctor for operation?

Diploma in Otorhinolaryngology (DLO), MBBS
Ear-Nose-Throat (ENT) Specialist, Bangalore
Allergy is the cause of your sneezing which has nothing to do with the accident. You will have to get the nose examined by an ent surgeon to rule out any nasal defects like a deviated nasal septum or an enlarged inferior turbinates. Surgery should always be the last resort.

This is temporary phase as per your details, and take some anti allergic to get recovery and start taking fresh fruits with its pulp as this only would help you in getting proper hydration in your nose as nose gets moist and this itching thing gets over, dried up secretion in nose will lead to itching so keep hydrated yourself with iron rich diet.

He is suffering from meniere disease and vertigo problem. Any precautions please suggest.

MS - ENT
Ear-Nose-Throat (ENT) Specialist, Gandhinagar
Meniere disease is usually treated symptomatically by giving anti vertigo medicines, vitamins and many times by giving vasodilators. If it is too frequent certain surgical remedies are there but still it has a doubtful outcome.
