Tips on Lower Back Pain
Hello, I am Dr G.P. Dureja, senior consultant and director at the Delhi pain management centre, in New Delhi.

Today, I am going to discuss a very important topic, Back pain. As we all know, the prevalence of back pain in India is rising tremendously. Not only in younger people, but middle-aged and older people are also suffering from persistent back pain may it be lower back pain or upper back pain.

The causes of back pain are tremendous and numerous. But the most important cause is absolutely you have a back posture and because of our back posture which results in disk collapse which causes pressure on the nerves and results in excruciating lower back pain which radiate to the leg. This is very commonly seen nowadays in younger people who are always having bad postures and are always working beyond their scheduled time, working very hard with no emphasis on their back care.
When we talk about emphasis, I mean that they do not do any exercises, they do not walk, their muscles are all weak and when they sit for a long time in front of their computers, it results in severe back pain. In older people, of course, the common causes are lumber canal stenosis where because of the degenerative changes happening in the spine because of osteoporosis it results in pressing of the nerves or impingement of the nerves and that results in very severe back pain which is relating to the leg and the old people are generally not able to walk because of this.
So as I said, prevention is very important. Once you have been able to find out the cause of the pain which is causing the excruciating pain in the back, we should always look towards treating this and preventing this.
Preventing, we always emphasise on good posture. We always tell the patients how to sit properly, not to bend forward, not to lift weight and please take care of your both upper back and lower back. That means the cervical spine and the lumbar spine. That is why we tell the patients to continuously exercise. There is a set of exercises which you have to do it for 5 minutes a day and that is sufficient for strengthening your back muscles and preventing this severe pain to occur in you and your friends if you can guide them to.

There are various types of treatment available. We call it as a conservative management when a patient can take medicines or just be on rest. And after adequate rest and medicine, when the pain is relieved, he does continuously exercises takes care of his posture, sits properly at his job place and does not do any forward bending or weight-lifting activities. Most of the patients will get relief at this manoeuvre or this conservative treatment and get relief in pain. Of course, there are people who do not get relief in pain because they have a bulging disc which is irritating the nerve and therein the role of a pain physician comes in. A pain physician can help a patient by injecting into the spinal column or in the spinal cord, giving drugs or even doing discectomy by needles and getting rid of the pain, avoiding a certain surgery.
In younger people, we generally tend to avoid surgery and that is the reason interventions in the spine done by pain clinicians are becoming very popular and can help a large number of patients.
After the pain has gone down, we rehabilitate the patient, give them the advice as in how to sit/ how to stand and how to exercise and takes care of the pain completely and patient just has to follow the simple instruction throughout the life.
If you want to consult us at Delhi pain management centre you can contact us through Lybrate and also we can give you an appointment if you want to show any of our consultants here and they will tell you all about how to look after your spine and how to do the exercises.

Thank You.

I am raju yadav kumar 40 years male and have right leg pain . Give me some suggestions.
: keep your leg raised while sitting or lying quadriceps strengthening exercises- quad clenches: lie flat on your back or sit upright on a chair with leg kept horizontally on another surface. Now, tighten the muscle on the front of the thigh by pushing your knee down. You should feel your thigh muscles clench, hold for 3 secs. Repeat 10 times twice a day. Short arcs: lie flat on your back or sit upright with your leg placed horizontally on a flat surface like a chair or bed. Place a rolled up towel under the knee. Pull your toes towards you and clench you thigh muscles. Slowly lift your foot up off the bed until your knee is straight (keep your knee resting on the towel). Hold for 3 secs and slowly lower them on the chair. Repeat 10 times twice a day. Straight leg raise: lie flat on your back. One leg and knee will be straight and other leg should be bent. Pull your toes towards you and tighten/clench the muscle on the front of the thigh, locking your knee straight. Lift your foot up in the air, about 6 inches off the bed. Hold for 3 secs and slowly lower the leg. The knee must remain straight the whole time you are doing this exercise.

Physiotherapy For Upper-Back Pain

Physiotherapy For Upper-Back Pain

Got a desk job? You probably find yourself hunched over your laptop or table working long hours. To add to the misery, they don’t make the chairs to really flatter your back. This really makes you wish they provided massage chairs, but not every one of us is that fortunate!

The result? A crankier you with a sore back, who comes back home with spirits lower than the Monday blues.  Even if you truly enjoy your job, it makes you think twice about going back again.

It’s probably something you take for granted, but your upper spine receives a lot of support from the muscles in your shoulder, neck, chest, and back. By strengthening those muscles through exercise, you can fend off issues of the neck and upper back pain.

It will take a regular regimen of back exercises to make your muscles stronger and better able to support your spine. You should perform these exercises in sessions of 15 to 30 minutes a day, at least two or three times each week, the experts say. Be sure to consult your doctor before undertaking such a program, however, especially if you're already suffering from upper back pain. Here is a list of extremely easy exercises that you can do right away -

  1. Thoracic Extension: Put your hands behind your head and stretch back, looking up at the ceiling. Do this at least 10 ten times and keep repeating this throughout the day.
  2. Scapular Squeeze: You can do this sitting or standing. Put your arms on either side and squeeze your shoulder blades towards each other. Do two sets of 15.
  3. Knee To Chest: Lie on your back with your toes pointing up, slowly bend your knees pulling your leg closer to the chest and hold it for 20 seconds. Repeat three times for each leg.
  4. Yoga Cat/Cow: Kneel on all fours, with the hands beneath your shoulders and knees below your hips. While exhaling, gently arch your spine. And while inhaling, tighten your core muscles and arch your back outwards like a cat. Do 2 sets of 10.
  5. The Door Stretch: Stand in an open doorway or wall. Put your hands slightly above your head and lean forward until you feel a stretch on your shoulders. Hold for 15-30 seconds. Repeat this 5 times.
  6. Thoracic Stretch: Sit with your legs stretched in front of you. Hold the middle of your thighs and lean forward with your head curling up towards your pelvic region.
  7. Arm Slide On The Wall: While sitting or standing, put your palms or elbows on the nearest wall and slide it up to the highest point without removing contact with the wall.

In case you have a concern or query you can always consult an expert & get answers to your questions!

Pain killers or any oil can not reduce your pain, you must have to take heat fermentation and regular excercise and proper diagnosis will only help you in getting rid of pain.

Hello sir, I have suffering for back pain, which medicine I can take for this desire? Thank you.
First of all check your posture when you are lifting any material like heavy bucket . And try to lift the heavy bucket without bending your back . you may lift the bucket after bending your knees only. This will definitely help you. * Gentle massage with lukewarm mustard oil of your waist area will also give you relief. * Surya Namaskar is only exercise which you need to do. * In diet vegetable protein of cereal , B complex supplements and half teaspoon of haldi in a cup of milk for seven days will give you enough relief.
