My mom has thyroid problem. Her recent TSH level is 4.4. She has problems like joint pain in shoulder, extra sensitivity to cold etc. What kind of diet and exercises she should do?

MBBS, CCEBDM, Diploma in Diabetology
Endocrinologist, Hubli-Dharwad
Lybrate-user, with tsh at 4.4 mu/l most of the symptoms of hypothyroidism should be in check. If still she has troublesome symptoms as mentioned, then the dose may have to be increased by another 12.5 mcg, so that there is better control achieved. There are no special exercises, best is to walk daily for 1 hour. As regards food, certain foods to be avoided are soy beans, soy containing products, cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, radish, peanuts, mustard and coffee. Should consume more of green leafy vegetables, salads and fruits. Always use whole grain flour for chapati and roti. Avoid maida. Thanks.

Dear , I can understand your situation. But, as you are not his legally wedded wife and as you have your own family to be with, addressing your boy friends problem and being with him during this troubled time may not be possible. The best thing you can do is to take your boy friend to a psychiatrist for consultation and treatment. Take care.

After lifting a not very heavy handbag full of clothes in December, I experienced a painful cramp on the dorsal part of right hand just below the elbow. That pain continues in a network in that area and and my hand palm and fingers are too weak to tackle and lift a dictionary or a book. The pain also occurs when sitting idle mostly while sitting. But can tackle and lift heavier things like a plastic chair without pain. Had C2 C3, spondylitis with left upper arm pain also.

Contrast bath---It is a form of treatment where a limb or the entire body is immersed in warm water followed by the immediate immersion of the limb or body in ice water. This procedure is repeated several times, alternating hot and cold. Note that the treatment should always end in the ice water, as heat will induce the body's inflammatory response, while cold helps to decrease inflammation. Gentle Stretching of Hand Muscles. Avoid face/head wash for 1 week b. Avoid swimming /water sports for 6 weeks c. I had my first gout attack in 2013, when I was on a Telma-H drug for hypertension. Following dietary discretion the problem remain well controlled and I gradually lost some weight as well. 3-4 years after retirement, the weight gradually returned, and so did the gout problem. Fortunately I never had a full-blown attack ever again, but had a few flare-ups in spite of the fact that I have been on Xyloric 100 mg OD. I also take drugs for hypertension & DM, and both are well-controlled and routinely home-monitored. I am currently having a gout flare-up. Last year in March I was hospitalized for pneumonia, and amongst other drugs they gave me Medrol 8 mg BD. It was taken for 5 days in the hospital & for 5 days at home, and then tapered off over a 7-10 period. Following THIS corticosteroid treatment I remained absolutely gout-free for a period of about 9 months. So much so that while taking good care of diet & hydration I could even give up Xyloric during THIS period. As I'm currently having a flare-up (I know I won't restart Xyloric during the flare-up) I would like to know if I can get a corticosteroid shot in my affected toe rather than having to take NSAIDs for any length of time. And, if a good doctor isn't available around for a toe-injection, can I use Medrol again. If yes, in what dosage, and for how long? My SUA was 6.2 In September, 2016. It is yet to be tested again. Thank you.

MBBS, CCEBDM, Diploma in Diabetology
Endocrinologist, Hubli-Dharwad
Mr. lybrate-user Kumar, Thanks for the query. For controlling acute attack either NSAIDs or Medrol is fine. You may take it for a few days till the attack subsides. That could be for about a week or so. Then reduce the dose and stop slowly. Serum uric acid value is below 7 mg, which is fine. Continue taking diet free of high purine foods. Further it is very important to reduce weight, which I am sure you will be able to do. Yiur ideal body weight should be 58 plus kgs. Thanks.

I hope this message finds you in good health. To prevent hair fall, you can follow some simple steps as listed below: 1. Use mild shampoo to wash hair (you can make your own shampoo using reetha and shikakai at home). 2. Stop using conditioners. Use natural conditioners like egg, yogurt and lemon. 3. Massage your scalp with a mix of oils like olive, coconut, sesame, castor oil at night. 4. Apply raw amla juice on hair thrice a week. 5. Rub your scalp with the juice of white onion. 6. Use a paste of bhringraj on hair.

MBBS, CCEBDM, Diploma in Diabetology

Hello, having diabetes mellitus need not affect using of hair dye. Some persons may have allergy to a hair dye, if that happens then one has to stop. Allergy can cause a lot of different symptoms. So if you are allergic to it do not use.
