I am a regular smoker; now I am unable to run and facing breathing problems. How can I control smoking.

Ph. D - Psychology, Professional Certified Coach
Psychologist, Ahmedabad
One of the few habits which takes very systematic approach and needs lot of support and individualized stretagies to quit successfully. Data such as - since how long are you smoking and how many cigarettes a day you consume are important information. Also have you tried quitting it earlier? how successful were you? and what are your personal reasons to stop smoking? all these are also important part of your success stretagy. Broadly speaking your reasons for not smoking work as your motivator. The stronger the reasons behind not smoking the higher the motivation and thus higher the chances for you to be successful. Also your body will have a withdrawal symptoms and it is very important to come up with strategies and solid plan to counter these withdrawal symptoms. These strategies should be tailormaid as per your need and situation. If you consider these and many other individualized approach and if you have a solid support through out your journey. You would be able to make a shift from being a smoker to a non smoker. You could either contact someone in your city or contact me to work either telephonically or via internet based system. Hope this helps wishing you very best.

DNB(Respiratory Diseases), MBBS
Pulmonologist, Jabalpur
Take a good diet, containing high protein diet. The food items mentioned above are no exceptions, if you can digest them. Suggestion is to take frequent small diets than fixed larger diets in a day. Avoid very heavy physical work as your body might be weak presently. Mental exercise is ok but stress has to be avoided.

42 is perimenopausal time, means a few years before and after the periods stop at age ranging from 40-50 but women do live a healthy life till 100+with age related problems only. During this phase called menopausal syndrome the woman may suffer from either of these 5 symptoms / few of symptoms / none of symptoms. 1) periods stop & reproductive hormones decline and she is more prone to heart attacks 2) osteoporotic bones, hollow bones with less calcium 3) depression and empty nest syndrome as her own children are either married or leading their own lives and she feels unwanted 4) organs sag like skin shows some wrinkles, there is tendency to have urinary symptoms as bladder has less power in its muscles to retain urine for longer hours. 5) tendency to put on weight @ at least 1/2 kg per year. The woman can keep busy with her own hobbies and skills, she can continue to exercise & be careful about diet. Take supplements of calcium and vitamin d & multivitamins. Eat lots of fresh seasonal vegetables and fruits according to her constitution, drink toned milk & curds & reduce salt, sugar & fats. Get her checked for heart and bllod tested for lipids & sugar. Good to know that your own doctor has declared her as normal. Reassure her and this passing phase will be over soon.

If a person suffering from nasal obstruction with mild to moderate nasal allergies it means most probably he is suffering from dns (deviated nasal septum. Nasal obstruction is because of the deviated portion of the nasal septum (this is the bony partition of the nose cavity. Allergies are because of the hampered muco-ciliary mechanism (normally mucus is produced in the nose to moisten our nose cavity, oral cavity, and help food bolus to move downward, this mucus is basically moves on the cilia of the nasal mucosa) this mechanism gets hampered and mucus start accumulating in the nose and sinus cavity which is why thick mucus comes from nose in patients of nose obstruction and person develops sinusiits. When a surgeon removes the nasal septum deviation has not been removed properly the symptoms persists, and patient thinks that the nose bone has again regrown. It is not because of regrowth but because of half surgery done or due to the non removal of the deviation (reason can be many) nowadays nasal septal deviation can be removed endoscopically.

Hello sir.
From last one year I have heart palpitation problem. Yesterday my heartbeats gone very slow for 30 seconds...
1st degree heart blocks only delay the passage of impulse from atria to ventricles and as such there is no loss of beats so you should not read too much in this. As far as palpitations are to be considered, this may be due to your anxiety and over consciousness. Try to keep yourself busy in your routine and diverted from this. In case your PR interval gets prolonged in any subsequent examination then reassessment of cardiac function may be done.

The Connection between Lung Cancer and Outdoor Air Pollution

MBBS, MS- Surgery , M.Ch - Surgical Oncology , FIAGES
Oncologist, Delhi
The Connection between Lung Cancer and Outdoor Air Pollution

Lung cancer is the cancer killer of both men and women in the U.S. When you think of risk factors for lung cancer, what comes to mind? Most of us think about the risk associated with smoking cigarettes, but did you know that air pollution can also cause lung cancer? Overwhelming evidence shows that particle pollution in the outdoor air we breathe—like that coming from vehicle exhaust, coal-fired power plants and other industrial sources - can cause lung cancer. Particle pollution increases the risk of dying early, heart disease and asthma attacks, and it can also interfere with the growth and function of the lungs.

What is Particle Pollution?

Particle pollution is a mix of tiny solid and liquid particles in the air and can be made up of a number of components, such as acids, organic chemicals, metals, soil and dust particles. It can be emitted directly from wood stoves, forest fires, vehicles and other sources, and it can also form from other types of pollution that come from sources like power plants.

Why does particle pollution harm our bodies?

While breathing in larger sizes of particle pollution can be harmful to our health, smaller particles are more dangerous. Bigger particles can irritate your eyes, nose and throat, but our natural defenses help us to cough or sneeze them out of our bodies. Unfortunately, those defenses don't keep out smaller particles, which get trapped deep in the lungs and can even get into the bloodstream, causing damage to our health.

Who is most at risk?

As for who is at risk for health problems from breathing in particle pollution. Those who live where particle pollution levels are high is at risk. Some people face higher risk, including children, the elderly, people with lung and heart disease and diabetes, people with low incomes, and people who work or exercise outdoors.

How do we protect ourselves from particle pollution?

Check the air quality index forecast for the day and limit your activity if pollution levels are high. Avoid exercising along heavily traveled highways regardless of the overall forecast.

As individuals, we can play our part in reducing air pollution levels by trying to avoid creating more of it. Choosing ‘active travel’ options where possible, like walking and cycling, can help reduce pollution levels from transport and is also a great way to be more active, which is linked to a reduced risk of cancer and other diseases. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a oncologist and ask a free question.

Coughing is one of the most common reasons why people visit their doctors. When symptoms last for more than a few weeks, the cough would be diagnosed as being chronic. The most common causes of chronic cough include post nasal drip, asthma and acid reflux. Post nasal drip, caused by allergic rhinitis, and asthma certainly could be caused by allergies, which could be worse seasonally.
