Hi thanks for your query and welcome to lybrate. I am Dr. Akshay from fortis hospital, new delhi. There are many causes of swelling in the legs. Most common reason is postural and many patients develop it when they stand for a long time, but as soon as they elevate their leg up, the swelling subsides. It can happen after any injury which is a priority to diagnose and treat accordingly. Also there could be infection or inflammation which can lead to swelling. Sometimes heavy physical activity may also lead to swelling in your calf muscles. But we have to look at medical causes as well, chronic cardiac conditions can lead to swelling, any pathology which leads to low proteins in the body like deranged lft, kft etc can also lead to swelling. Hypothyroidism can also lead to generalized swelling like appearance in the body. So for accurate diagnosis we need to clinically evaluate and get appropriate tests: cbc, esr, crp, lft, kft, serum electrolytes and thyroid profile. Please get back to me should you need more information or with test results. Do not hesitate to contact me if you need any further assistance. You can also discuss your case and treatment plans with me in a greater detail in a private consultation. Thanks & regards

All About Gallbladder Surgery

All About Gallbladder Surgery

Surgery using a laparoscope is the most common way to remove the gallbladder. A laparoscope is a thin, lighted tube that lets the doctor see inside our belly. It is a minimally invasive surgery in which small incisions and specialized tools are used to remove a diseased or infected gallbladder.

The gallbladder is a small organ that sits right under the liver and is credited with bile storage, which can help the body in breaking down various kinds of fats that enter it. So, what all do you need to know about this operation? Read this list.

Reasons for Gallbladder Operation: The gallbladder is not a very efficient organ. It can lead to blockages and choking as the bile it stores can become very thick and difficult to handle. Also, this bile can harbour deposits that are hard ball like substances, usually known as gallbladder stones. The size of these stones can vary from the size of a grain to the size of a golf ball.

Further, these gallbladder stones can cause infections, which can lead to symptoms like nausea, vomiting, bloating and more. Another reason can also be the gallbladder disease known as chloelithiasis, which can cause abdominal pain. Inflammation in the pancreas, also known as pancreatitis, can lead to gallbladder open removal surgery.

Risk: While the gallbladder removal surgery is usually considered a safe one, with little or no complications, there are risks attached to this surgery too. These include sudden and excessive bleeding and the creation of blood clots, allergic reactions to the drugs used as well as anaesthesia, blood vessel damage, accelerated heart rate which leads to an increased risk of contracting a heart attack or heart disease, infections, inflammation or swelling in the pancreas, and injuries caused to the bile duct during surgery.

You might also need this type of surgery if you have the following:

  1. biliary dyskinesia, which occurs when the gallbladder doesn't fill or empty correctly due to a defect
  2. choledocholithiasis, which occurs when gallstones move to the bile duct and potentially cause a blockage that prevents the gallbladder from draining
  3. cholecystitis, which is an inflammation of the gallbladder
  4. pancreatitis, which is an inflammation of the pancreas

Laparoscopic surgery is preferred over open cholecystectomy surgery because the smaller incisions that are made reduce your risk of infection, bleeding, and recovery time.

Preparation: To prepare for your gallbladder removal surgery, the doctor may ask you to have a prescription fluid so that your bowels are flushed clean. You may also be asked to fast for at least six hours before the surgery so that there is no hindrance to the same. Also, the use of an antibacterial soap to bathe is usually prescribed so that the risk of contracting infections decreases.

While this surgery can be a simple one, you will have to take due care after the surgery to ensure that the recovery is fast and virtually pain free.

Asking your doctor if an antiobiotic medicine can be taken is advisable as it can help in reducing the infection and swelling. It can also be taken after the treatment for faster healing.

In todays stressful life proportion of infertility is increased significantly, you need to stop all medications (except multivitamins), and concentrate on balanced and healthy diet along with regular exercise, this is for both husband and wife, living together for more than 2 years and still not concieveing calls for starting infertility treatment which includes a set of tests for both husband and wife, since your age is already 35 you should not delay it further.

Hi thanks for your query and welcome to lybrate. I am Dr. Akshay from fortis hospital, new delhi. There can be many reasons for such a feeling, it can be from spine or generalized due to some medical cause for it. Can you tell me whether you experience any neck pain, is this heaviness actually numbness or something else? I would actually say you consult your general physician or cardiologist if there is no neck issue because then orthopaedic cause will be ruled out. Do not hesitate to contact me if you need any further assistance.

I m suffering from a lot of pain in my foot after pregnancy and periods of pregnancy.

MBBS
General Physician, Faridabad
While morning sickness, fatigue, and back pain are frequent complaints during pregnancy, leg and foot problems are just as common, particularly during the last trimester. Fortunately, chances are these ailments will disappear after you deliver. In the meantime, there are some things you can do to alleviate discomfort. Beginning early in your pregnancy, alternate circulation-boosting exercise with the proper amount of rest (prop those feet and legs up!). This can prevent foot and leg problms from developing in the first place. But if those aches have already begun, here's the scoop on what's causing them and what you can do about it. Raised hormone levels cause you to retain water during pregnancy, making you feel swollen and bloated. Your body needs this extra fluid so it can do the work of carrying nutrients and oxygen to your baby

Hi, your son seems to have low grade fever with backpain. This can arise due to a systemic infection or even a localised infection in the back. So it would be worthwhile to rule out a local back pathology. In view of the same get the following blood tests fasting: hb, tlc, dlc, esr, pcr for tb and x ray ls spine ap and lateral views. X ray of the spine is done fasting and after taking tab dulcolax 3 tabs and tab charcoal 4 tabs at bedtime the night before the x ray. Revert back with investigation reports.

My mother is 50 years old and us suffering from diabetes from the last 5 years. Now she is complaining of pain in the whole body. Pain is more in her wrist. There is also swelling in her legs. All tests are normal. Kidney function test and all that. We are unable to find the root cause of the pain. Kindly help us.

DNB (General Medicine)
General Physician, Noida
Pain could be due to diabetic arthropathy, neuropathy, calcium, vit d deficiency. Wrist pain might also be due to carpal tunnel syndrome. Get calcium and vit d3 levels, tsh, uric acid. Take tab. Remyelin d twice daily. Swelling in legs could be due to low proteins. Get an lft, urine r/e and if she's hypertensive bcoz of amlodipine if she's on it. Venous insufficiency might also cause leg swelling.

I think that I have a stone in my stomach because sometimes my urine does not get out. What should i do for that?
Dear lybrate-user, You need to do an ultrasound for the correct diagnosis for your urine retention that it is because of your stone. There are various other reasons of urine retention apart from bladder stones such as enlarged prostate, infections that cause swelling or irritation, nerve problems that interfere with signals between the brain and the bladder, medications, constipation, urethral stricture, or a weak bladder muscle. Consult me for further evaluation. Your feedback matters. Thank-you.
