Tuberculosis - Symptoms, Causes And Treatment

Tuberculosis is a highly infectious and potentially fatal disease which primarily affects the lungs. It is highly contagious and can infect other people via the tiny water droplets released by an infected person while coughing or sneezing. Some strains of this disease have the potential to resist drugs, which are commonly used to cure tuberculosis.

Read more to find all about the different causes, symptoms, preventive measures and the treatment of tuberculosis:

  1. Symptoms: Tuberculosis, also known as TB, can be both latent and active. In latent condition TB is not contagious and it does not harm the infected person. But latent TB can change to an active form so treating it in its latent condition is highly advisable. Active TB can be diagnosed due to the prevalence of certain symptoms such as a cough, which lasts for more than 3 weeks, coughing up of blood, unintentional weight loss, chills, chest pain, loss of appetite and fever. Tuberculosis mainly affects the lungs, but can also affect your kidneys, brain and spinal cord.
  2. Causes: Tuberculosis in general is caused by infection. It spreads from person to person by ultra-small droplets, which an infected person releases while coughing or sneezing. Tuberculosis is highly contagious but it is not very easy to catch TB as the immune system of your body fights it off. Also if a patient of TB is under treatment, the person 's disease is no more contagious.
  3. Risk factors: Potentially everyone can be infected with TB but certain factors increase the chances of infection such as a weakened immune system, living in or travelling to certain areas and substance abuse. TB can also cause complications such as spinal and joint damage, liver or kidney problems and heart disorders.
  4. Treatment: Administering medical drugs is the most convenient way of treating TB. But TB is more persistent than normal bacterial infections and utmost care and caution must be taken to treat it. Completion of treatment is highly essential to fully cure TB. Some of the side effects of TB medication include loss of appetite, nausea or vomiting, dark urine and jaundice. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a pulmonologist.

How safe is unprotected sex during certain periods of the month, like first few days after MC ends, a week after, two weeks, three weeks. Apart from condoms (which are certainly the safest option), what temporary measures can be taken to avoid pregnancy. Also, how accurate pregnancy test kits can be.

You can calculate it by 2 ways---------------- 1. You can have unprotected sex from 1-8 days of a woman's cycle and 20th to appearance of menses days, considering day-1 as 1st day of menses but for these safe period days your menstrual cycle have to be accurate ie. 28 (+-) 2 days.---------------------here day -9 to day-19 is ovulatory or unsafe period in which having unprotected sex can lead to pregnancy-------------------------- 2. If a female has a problem of late or early periods then you can calculate the ovulation day as expected date of menses minus 14 days. Now the ovulatory phase or unsafe periods days comes out to be ovulation day (+-) 5 days, and safe period for unprotected sex will come out to be all other days apart from this ovulatory phase.----lets take an example to explain this---if a woman has a menstrual cycle of 32 days (it must be mathematically accurate) and if her menses started on 1st december and her expected date of next menses comes out to be 2nd february. So her ovulation day comes out to be 18 december (2nd feb minus 14 days) and her ovulatory phase comes out to be 13-23 december (18 dec (+-) 5 days. So having unprotected sex for all other days except 13-23 december is the safe period and by same way a female can calculate her safe and unsafe periods if she is having early menses but make one thing for sure that accuracy of expected date should be 99-100% and she should not be facing any irregular periods problem--------------- 3. For having unprotected sex without fear of being pregnant a female must be sure about 2 things----- (a) her periods are 99-100% regular-------- (b) her calculations regarding ovulatory phase are 100% accurate and for that she should be 100% accurate in calculating her expected date of periods---- (c) take no chance of even 1 day just to please her boy as at the end she is the only one who is going to suffer------------------------

I had a sleeping problem. At night no sleep but at day just sleep Solution please.

Fellowship in Endocrinology, DNB (FM),National Board of Examinations, MD Physician
General Physician, Delhi
I had a sleeping problem. At night no sleep but at day just sleep
Solution please.
Hello lybrate user practice sleep hygiene for sound sleepa as sleep hygiene is the key to sweet dreams. Poor sleep habits are among the most common problems encountered in our society. We stay up too late and get up too early. We interrupt our sleep with drugs, chemicals and work, and we overstimulate ourselves with late-night activities such as television. === fix a bedtime and an awakening time. Do not be one of those people who allows bedtime and awakening time to drift. The body" gets used" to falling asleep at a certain time, but only if this is relatively fixed. Even if you are retired or not working, this is an essential component of good sleeping habits. Avoid napping during the day. If you nap throughout the day, it is no wonder that you will not be able to sleep at night. The late afternoon for most people is a" sleepy time. Many people will take a nap at that time. This is generally not a bad thing to do, provided you limit the nap to 30-45 minutes and can sleep well at night. Avoid alcohol 4-6 hours before bedtime. Many people believe that alcohol helps them sleep. While alcohol has an immediate sleep-inducing effect, a few hours later as the alcohol levels in your blood start to fall, there is a stimulant or wake-up effect. Avoid caffeine 4-6 hours before bedtime. This includes caffeinated beverages such as coffee, tea and many sodas, as well as chocolate, so be careful. Avoid heavy, spicy, or sugary foods 4-6 hours before bedtime. These can affect your ability to stay asleep. Exercise regularly, but not right before bed. Regular exercise, particularly in the afternoon, can help deepen sleep. Strenuous exercise within the 2 hours before bedtime, however, can decrease your ability to fall asleep. Your sleeping environment use comfortable bedding. Uncomfortable bedding can prevent good sleep. Evaluate whether or not this is a source of your problem, and make appropriate changes. Find a comfortable temperature setting for sleeping and keep the room well ventilated. If your bedroom is too cold or too hot, it can keep you awake. A cool (not cold) bedroom is often the most conducive to sleep. Block out all distracting noise, and eliminate as much light as possible. Possible. Relaxation techniques before bed. Don't take your worries to bed. Leave your worries about job, school, daily life, etc. Behind when you go to bed. Some people find it useful to assign a" worry period" during the evening or late afternoon to deal with these issues. Establish a pre-sleep ritual. Pre-sleep rituals, such as a warm bath or a few minutes of reading, can help you sleep. Get into your favorite sleeping position. If you don't fall asleep within 15-30 minutes, get up, go into another room, and read until sleepy.
