I regularly have headache and acidity. I found that, having sinarest paracetamol works on me than any other medicine. How long should I take it? And what should I do to avoid such medicines?

MD-Physician, PGDCC
Cardiologist, Jaipur
Hello. In headache due to acidity you must not take paracetamol. As it can cause ulcers in your stomach and can be dangerous. This is why one should never take medicines by on his own. Best tratment is to control acidity. Avoid red chillies and powder, control in alcohol or smoking or frequent teas. Eat in small amounts but 4 to 5 times a day. Feel free to consult an expert.

Hi! Dr. I want to know about what is difference between small pox and big pox and what's the cause.

C.S.C, D.C.H, M.B.B.S
General Physician,
Differences between chickenpox and smallpox chickenpoxsmallpox how initial symptoms differ0 to 2 days of mild illness pass before the rash develops. 2 to 3 days of severe illness pass before the rash develops. Lesions first appear on the face or trunk. Lesions first appear in the throat or mouth, then on the face, or on the upper arms. How the rash lesions differlesions develop in successive fashion. While some are new, others are crusting over (in" crops"). Lesions develop at the same time, and they look alike on any one section of the body, such as the abdomen, arms, or face. Lesions change rapidly, crusting over within 24 hours. Lesions change slowly, scabbing over after 9 to 15 days. Lesions sit on the skin surface and look like small blisters. Lesions become firm, dome-shaped, and deep in the skin. Rash rarely develops on palms and soles. Rash commonly develops on palms of the hands and soles of the feet. Lesions are most concentrated on the torso, with fewest on the hands and feet. Lesions can affect the face and scalp, but rarely affect the entire body equally. Lesions are most concentrated on the face, hands, and feet.

Type 1 Diabetes is genetic and passed through genes. This usually appears in children or teens. .. Type 2 Diabetes is not genetic and it is acquired due to excessive/rich food. It is a lifestyle disease. It is a modern day disease and it can be prevented by proper diet and exercise.

My father has an asthma. What is the effect of using an asthma preventer for long term.

MD - Pulmonary Medicine
Pulmonologist, Khammam
Hi. Prevention n avoidance of triggers play the most important role in asthma management. Novel medications are available now for asthma are inhalers. Regular usage of these keeps your asthma in control. Side effects are negligible compared to oral pills. Bcause they are a part of targeted therapy. Work at the site of disease with out altering other systems. Thanks.

What Are Hives? What Causes Them?

MBBS(Hons), MD (Gold Medalist) Dermatology
Dermatologist, Kolkata
What Are Hives? What Causes Them?

Hives, also called urticaria are swollen welts or bumps that appear on your skin suddenly.

They itch, burn and sting and can happen anywhere on your body. You can get them on your face, lips, tongue, ears or chest. And in size, they can be as small as an eraser to as large as a plate. They also form plaques and can last for hours or up to several days.

Types

  1. Acute urticaria - These type of hives last less than six weeks. The most common causes are allergies due to certain foods and medications, or infections. These hives can also happen due to diseases or insect bites.
  2. Chronic urticaria - Hives lasting more than six weeks come under this category. What causes them is usually more difficult to identify than what causes acute urticaria. In some cases, chronic hives are caused due to thyroid disease, hepatitis or even cancer. This type can affect your internal organs like lungs, muscles, and the gut. Thus, symptoms include muscle soreness, shortness of breath, vomiting, and diarrhoea.
  3. Physical urticaria - These types are caused due to direct physical stimulation of the skin due to cold, heat, sun exposure, vibration, pressure, sweating, and exercise.

What causes hives?

Hives happen mostly due to allergies. Some of the common hive triggers are-

Certain foods, especially peanuts, eggs, nuts and shellfish- Fresh foods are more likely to cause hives as compared to cooked foods. Certain food additives and preservatives can also play culprits. Medicines like penicillin and sulfa- based antibiotics, aspirin and ibuprofen which are non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications, high blood pressure drugs like ACE inhibitors, and painkillers such as codeine can also trigger hives. Other things that may cause it are:

  1. Insect bites
  2. Latex
  3. Transfusion of blood
  4. Bacterial infections, including urinary tract infections and infected throat
  5. Viral infections- common cold and hepatitis
  6. Pollen grains
  7. Plants like poison oak and poison ivy
  8. Sunlight
  9. Cold weather
  10. Pet dander

If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a dermatologist.

I am 26 years old married. I have polycystic ovarian syndrome. I was on contraceptive pills for 6th month. After stop taking pills I got my period regular for 2 months. I have missed my period last April. I have done pregnancy test and test was positive My doctor did not repeat test again. I just want to know is prega news test results accurate?

Diploma in Advanced Gynaec Laparoscopic Surgery, Fellowship in Laparoscopic and Robotic Onco-Surgery, MD - Obstetrtics & Gynaecology, MBBS
Gynaecologist, Zirakpur
Hi lybrate-user Preganews tests are pretty much accurate for confirming pregnancy event at the earliest. But the subjective confirmation is found only on ultrasonography. I suggest you should go for ultrasound. There are few advantages of getting ultrasound done: 1) confirmation of pregnancy 2) confirmation of pregnancy INSIDE uterus (chances of pregnancy in tubes need to be ruled out in any case) 3) As in your case, prolonged cycles, we need to confirm the gestational age as the earliest ultrasound parameters of the baby decides the baseline for future reference. 4) Any congenitally abnormal development of baby can be diagnosed as earliest as possible. It is a standard protocol in OBGYN practices that the ultrasound be conducted as soon pregnancy is diagnosed.
