I have too much of Snoring problem. I didn't take treatment yet. What can I do now?

BAMS
Ayurveda, Bangalore
Hi, Please follow these tips to stop snoring: - Reduce your weight if you are obese. - Perform pranayama (breathing exercises) everyday. - Quit smoking which irritates the mucosal layer of the nose and throat and causes blockage and results in snoring. - Quit alcohol and sedatives which relax the throat muscles and results in snoring. - Sleep on sides instead on back. - Elevate the head by using a thick pillow which eases the breathing. - Clear the nose before going to bed. - Establish regular sleep pattern. - Keep the bedroom air moist by using humidifier; as dry air irritates the mucosal membrane in the nose and throat. - Perform throat exercises like repeating the vowels a, e, i, o, you loudly for 2-3 mins few times a day or keeping the tongue behind the teeth and moving it backwards - 3-4 times a day. - Anti snoring appliances can also be used.

I am 23 years old. I have snoring problem. Can you please suggest how to control it.

MS - ENT
Ear-Nose-Throat (ENT) Specialist, Rajkot
It may be due to overweight, nasal blockage, low soft palate or enlarged tonsils. So for proper diagnosis you are requested to send photos of nose and throat For further help consult me privately. Mostly people having snoring, have also sleep apnea, so you must go for a test called sleep study, by which we can diagnose a disease called sleep apnea. Send me the report of sleep study, so I can guide you further.

You might be suffering from tinnitus which is the sensation of hearing ringing, buzzing, hissing, chirping, whistling, or other sounds and is often associated with hearing loss. There are multiple causes of tinnitus like ear wax, middle ear infection, hypertension, migraine, age related and many more. Consult a nearby ent specialist for proper evaluation (which will include a complete ent examination, audiogram and some radiological investigations) and management which is currently cognitive behavioral therapy/ tinnitus retraining therapy.

Sinusitis - Conditions That Lead to It!

MS - ENT, DNB (ENT)
ENT Specialist, Delhi
Sinusitis - Conditions That Lead to It!

Sinuses are cavities in our skull behind the nose which spread out in a pattern. These cavities are lined with tissues and mucosal membranes and are essential for our breathing process. Sinusitis is a condition where the tissues within the cavities become inflamed which results in the sinus cavities being blocked due to a buildup of fluid.

What are the conditions that can lead to sinusitis?
Some of the conditions that can cause nasal polyps are explained as follows:

  1. Nasal polyps are small growths of tissue within the lining of the nose which may block the sinuses, resulting in sinusitis.
  2. Common cold is also a culprit which may result in sinusitis
  3. If your septum or the bridge between the holes of the nose is deviated (this condition is referred to as a deviated septum), you may be prone to developing sinusitis.
  4. The lining of the nose may swell in a condition known as allergic rhinitis and cause sinusitis as well.

Types of sinusitis
There are multiple types of sinusitis which may affect people and also on how long they last. The various types of sinusitis are explained below:

  1. Acute sinusitis: This is the most common form of sinusitis that lasts usually between 2 to 4 weeks. It starts with a cold, blocked nose and turns into facial pain that usually starts very suddenly.
  2. Chronic sinusitis: This is a form of sinus infection which can have a debilitating effect on your life and may last for 12 weeks or longer.
  3. Sub-acute sinusitis: This is somewhere between acute and chronic sinusitis and may last from anywhere between 4 to 12 weeks.
  4. Recurrent sinusitis: This form of sinus infections tend to be a variation of acute or sub-acute sinusitis which tends to occur multiple times a year.

Symptoms of sinusitis
The manifestation of the symptoms of sinusitis may be different from person to person and also on the type of sinusitis you are suffering from. However, there are some generic symptoms that are common to all forms which are mentioned as follows:

  1. Smelling senses may be dulled
  2. Facial pain
  3. Congestion accompanied by a cough
  4. Nose may be blocked, stuffy and may also be runny
  5. Other symptoms may also include bad breath, fatigue, or even dental pain
  6. Nasal cavity may have pus and it may drain from time to time

It is best to consult a doctor quickly, if you have been having any of these symptoms. The doctor can prescribe nasal decongestants and antibiotics which can help. If you have chronic or recurrent sinusitis, then more aggressive and advanced treatments may be required.

Hello  You have not mentioned  whether your grandma has Hypertension  ,DIABETES,cardiac, Or any other problems.  Any blood tests done like PPBS,Thyroid function  tests, complete haemogram .Any history of head injury or neurological  problem?  Dizziness can be due to generalised weakness,Cardiovascular ,neurological or Ear-brain-balance problem. If due to ear problem there is no loss of consciousness generally. Urgent medical evaluation is needed. Urgently get a CT brain done , ECG. Get her checked by a physician to see her Blood pressure and other reflexes. If she has fainted with loss of consciousness a CT brain is urgently needed.

I am having nasal polyps since 3 years. I have already done with ct and pns of nose. And the local ranchi doctors are saying for immediate surgery. Bt I am scared of this and could be able to decide where is the best hospital in india or about doctor to get surgery done. Because the doctor which I consulted to told me no guarantee of full success. Some may be life risk. I m really scared of it. So suggest me sir actual feedback and advice where to get treatment. Thanx in advance.

MS , MBBS
Ear-Nose-Throat (ENT) Specialist, Bangalore
No surgeon can guarantee cure for nasal polyps as it is known for recurrence. If it is minimal polyps then you could do away with surgery by taking short course of steroids and long term intranasal steroids by which they shrink in size and disappear.

Pain at backside of head is generally due to problem in cervical spine (spine of neck). 1. Intervertebral disc prolapse in cervical spine. 2. Neck muscle strain. 3. Occipital neuralgia: entrapment of nerves at back of head. Diagnosis can be made by detailed symptoms of patient and examination findings. Mri cervical spine may be needed to confirm the diagnosis. Follow these tips to get relief; 1. Take simple analgesics like paracetamol or ibuprofen round the clock for 4 to 5 days. 2. Apply warm water bag on neck if you find it soothing. 3. Do neck stretching exercises after pain is relieved. 4. Maintain good posture during work or reading to relieve neck strain. Avoid reading or computer work with neck bent. Keep text books at eye level. 5. Consult a pain specialist to get relief from severe pain with injection known as occipital nerve block at back of head. If problem is persistent you need to consult again.

Dear lybrate user, dust allergy occurs due to the production of histamine in blood. This production of histamine is provoked by the entry of certain foreign substance in our respiratory system through the air we inhale. However if you are suffering from dust allergy from a considerable prolonged time then you should take the following medications:- 1) 5 drops of homoeopathic pyrogen 1000, thrice daily in empty stomach. 2) 30 drops of homoeopathic mother tincture cassia soph q, thrice daily, after meals, in a glass of water.

Hi, I am having lower back pain. I exercise regularly. Sometime I feel dizziness sensation. Please advise.

Dip. SICOT (Belgium), MNAMS, DNB (Orthopedics), MBBS
Orthopedist, Delhi
Hi thanks for your query and welcome to lybrate. I am Dr. Akshay from fortis hospital, new delhi. You are very young to actually have persistent back pains. If you have localized back pain with no other symptoms like radiating leg pain, neurological symptoms like numbness, weakness, paresthesias etc, then you can start with following recommendations for initial period of 2-3 weeks: - to maintain proper posture of your back while working and sleeping - if pain is more then you can take a short course of an anti-inflammatory medication like tab etoshine or paracetamol or one which suits you - physical therapy initially under supervision of a trained physiotherapist and then to continue at home - adequate calcium & vitamin d intake if levels are low in body - ice packs can applied if your pain is acute, then hot fomentation can be done at home - analgesic spray for local application can be used and is easily available. - avoid lifting heavyweight/ acute forward bending in mornings etc we will observe you for next 2-3 weeks how you respond to this conservative management protocol. If you are not feeling better, then we will have to get some investigations like, dynamic x rays of lower back and few blood tests for evaluation. Dizziness should not be due to your back issue and for that you need to consult a neurophysician / general physician for further opinion. Do not hesitate to contact me if you need any further assistance. You can also discuss your case and treatment plans with me in a greater detail in a private consultation.

I am from lucknow. I had surgery of my left ear 2012 due to flow of liquid from it which is coming from my childhood. But now i again faces the same problem and some kind of whistle is ringing in it. Please suggest me some solution for the same.

MS - ENT

Hello . What type of ear surgery was done . Also , what were the ear findings after the surgery was done. Please inform. Also the whistling / ringing sound you are experiencing , may occur with inner ear nerve dysfunction or with perforated ear drum. You may need a hearing evaluation - Audiometry to address that problem.
