Why Diabetic Patients Develop Eating Disorders?

Why Diabetic Patients Develop Eating Disorders?

Diabulimia is a type of eating disorder in which patients of Type 1 diabetes intake less amount of insulin purposely, in order to lose weight. This disorder, however, is not a formal diagnosis. The disorder may be defined as disturbed eating behavior.

Our body requires insulin for moving glucose from the blood to the cells. In type 1 diabetes patients, the pancreas stop producing insulin and glucose gets stored in our bloodstream. This causes extra stress on the kidney in getting rid of excess of sugar. The body gets devoid of glucose and the calories associated with it and a rapid loss in weight occurs. Patients develop binge eating, with more emphasis on sugar and carbohydrate enriched foods. The excess sugar gets out of the body by urinating.

The symptoms of this disease are:

  1. Occurrence of hyperglycemia
  2. Developing a habit of eating more, but still experiencing weight loss
  3. The shift in weight may be dramatic
  4. The energy level is low
  5. Eating patterns turn unusual
  6. Binge eating
  7. Developing an obsession for food
  8. Enhanced awareness about body image
  9. Feeling anxious about the weight
  10. A delay occurs in sexual maturity or attaining puberty
  11. Occurrence of stress
  12. Hospitalization is required frequently for diabetic patients
  13. Exercising amount increases
  14. The patient tends to hide food
  15. There is a smell of ketones from the breath and urine of the patient
  16. Frequency of urination gets enhanced
  17. Malnutrition occurs signalled by hair loss or drying of skin

Health hazards of Diabulimia

  1. Diabulimia can cause a great amount of permanent effects on the body, irrespective of age.
  2. Patients with diabulimia have a risk of getting early comorbidities.
  3. Health issues similar to issues arising from diabetes are observed, but are more adverse in nature.
  4. Dehydration happens along with excess urination.
  5. The patient experiences fatigue and the level of concentration falls down.
  6. An electrolyte disbalance is caused.
  7. There may be risk of heart attack, stroke, retinopathy, neuropathy, gastroparesis.
  8. Vascular disorders, gum infections and infertility in women may also occur.
  9. In the most extreme cases, death occurs.

Prevention
It has been proven by research that almost 30% of type 1 diabetes patients are the ones who abstain from or avoid using insulin in order to lose weight. This habit leads to the risk of many other fatal diseases which may be permanent in nature. Dibulimia is more common among teenage girls who suffer from type 1 diabetes and are generally obsessed with body image. Diabulimia is an eating disorder which leaves a patient at risk of acquiring many other severe diseases. It is advised not to neglect your insulin. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a doctor and ask a free question.

Dear lybrate user, you may be suffering from erectile dysfunction. To get rid of erectile dysfunction you could try ayurvedic gerivit forte capsule. Take one capsule just one hour before sex. Along with medicines you can also try a home therapy to boost your sexual performance. Soak 4-5 dry dates (khurma khajur) in a cup of lukewarm milk before going to bed daily. On waking up next morning eat those soaked dry dates & discard the milk. Repeat the process daily. This therapy often gives effective result within 15 days there are many conventional allopathic sexual pills in market such as adegra, viagra, penegra etc. Refrain yourself from using such pills as those pills contain a steroid called sildenafil. This steroid has a unique temporary effect on erectile problems. Patients using these pills for first time often report that their penis remain strong even after ejaculation. Such effects leads the patients to use sildenafil for prolonged course of time as they often feel that a full erection is possible only after taking sildenafil. Moreover it is very low cost & easy availability of this steroid has made it quite common as sexual medicine. But the bitter truth is prolonged use of sildenafil will permanently disable the normal physiological process behind erection & will render your body to become solely dependent upon sildenafil for erection. As a result you won't feel any slightest normal erection without taking sildenafil. This is an irreversible condition & it cannot be treated by any means. Once you attain this condition you become a life-time customer of that steroid sildenafil because you have to take sildenafil in order to satisfy your partner. As prevention is always better than cure I would advise you to check the composition of any sexual pills before buying. Discard any sexual pills which contains sildenafil in its composition. There are other compositions like tadalafil, citadel etc which gives unique result than sildenafil.

Hi, am 24 yrs old female. I have ear and throat itching at most of the time dat time I used to make one sound. Is it major problem? then what should I do? help me plz

MBBS, DGO (cal)
General Physician,
Sometimes such thing happens in everyone' s life. All make such noise. If your throat has become a continuous noise producing instrument then its problem for others. Jokes apart. Possibly you have allergic pharyngitis or low grade temporary infection of the throat. Do warm saline water gargle at bed time daily or better use betadine gargle lotion or listerine gargle lotion, may give better result. Betadine gargle lotion or listerine - how to use, is written on the bottle. Continue this for two weeks. Take a cetrizine 10 mg tab at 9 pm everyday for 5 days (it shall make you feel sleepy that' s why at 9 pm). Take shelcal 500 - 1 tab daily just before breakfast for one month, shall be helpful. Whenever you feel like doing this noise try to resist it or do a warm water gurgle. If it still persist consult an ent specialist. By the by, are you sure, you are having pcod? is it diagnosed?
