Hello viewers!

Welcome you all to Auraveda Wellness Kerala City, they are located in Kalkaji. And myself is Dr. Adarsh currently working as consultant physician. Here we follow Kerala tradition of ayurvedic therapies and foundations to treat different help outs.

Today I would like to talk to you regarding how Ayurveda manage to treat different health problems with the help of tools like Panchkarma and other kind of external therapies as well as internal foundations. So before going into details it will be good if you get an idea about the basics of the Ayurveda basics concepts.

Mainly the Tridosha Siddhanta - so you all might have heard about the tridosha vata pitta and kapha. So these three doshas along with its subdivisions carry out the entire functions of the human body like three pillars.

I will again explain about the vata, pitta and kapha a little more. Tridosha is basically based on the theory of panj mahauttar i.e. the theory about five elements - principles of five elements i.e. air, space, fire, water and earth. As far as this principle is concerned , everything in universe is composed of these five elements. Everything we can see , the presence of these five elements even (inaudible 1:30) is there. So this is a basic concept of this Tridosha.

Vatta dosha is air and space dominant energy factor which governs the principles of movements in our body. Pitta similarly is fire dominant energy factor which performs the functions of transformation in our body. There are many chemical biological transformation happening in our body which is governed by pitta dosha.

Similarly kapha dosha is an earth water dominant energy factor which governs the functions like lubrication, immunity, stability, growth etc. This is our concept of tridosha.

These 3 doshas will carry on all the functions of our body like the 3 pillars. So if there is any imbalance, it will be eased by these 3 doshas and they overcome the disease.

How ayurveda will manage to treat health problem? It is just a balance the imbalances doshas.

So how ayurveda will treat this imbalance? There are 2 types of treatments in Ayurveda - one is Shamana chikitsa and the other is sodhana chikitsa. Shamana means pacifying the dosha , the imbalance doshas within the body by giving some internal medicines with some external treatments.

Secondly what makes Ayurveda unique comparing to other system of medicines? It’s a glimpsing treatment i.e. sodhana chikitsa i.e. the panchakarma treatment. So in panchakarma, there is 5 treatment moralities that we use. Vamana that is therapeutically induced control vomiting. And virechana i.e. cleansing of the bowel with administering some with the help of some preventive tips. Third one nasya administering some nasal medicines as nasal drops and fourth one i.e. medicated adenema treatment in which we administer kind of medicines through the angular tract and the last one is (inaudible 3:31) i.e. we use bloodletting to take out the blood from the body.

So each of the therapies have unique properties. These are the panchakarma detoxifying procedures of Ayurveda which makes Ayurveda unique and if you want to know more about panchakarma therapy and how effective these therapies are and can be utilized for your health problems.

Cow Urine Therapy - Can It Help With Weight Management?

Obesity is a condition where excess body fat accumulates in your body to the extent that it might affect your health to a great degree. In today's sedentary lifestyle obesity is quite a common problem. It can also be because of genes, overeating or mental illness. This increases the risk of many terrible diseases like heart ailments, type 2 diabetes, certain types of cancer and osteoarthritis. There have been numerous aids for weight loss; surgeries and cow urine happens to be a few of the solutions to this problem. Like the animal itself, its urine is also considered sacred. It is believed to cure many other problems like heart ailments, hypertension and skin diseases. Cow urine has medicinal and healing properties are now being widely spread and known across the world.

Health risks with obesity
1. Coronary Heart Disease
2. High blood pressure
3. Type 2 diabetes
4. Stroke
5. Sleep Apnoea
6. Cancer

How it works in weight loss
There has been lot of arguments about the health benefits of cow urine. Cow urine consists of three main parts urea (which is the end product of metabolism), uric acid (due to high amounts of acidity it has strong antibacterial properties) and also numerous nutritional minerals which are not properly digested by the animal. Vitamins A, B, D and E and minerals like creatinine and gold present in many weight loss drugs are found in cow urine. Cow urine also contains various enzymes which help in digestion. When it is mixed with certain hormones and additional vitamins, it works wonders in weight loss. The presence of copper irons do not allow fat to deposit and helps in lowering your cholesterol.

Precautions you should take before consuming cow urine
Although it's many benefits you should always maintain these precautions before you consume this liquid:

1. If the cow is infected, it means that the urine is also infected and therefore you should avoid it
2. Do not consume if raw cow urine is kept for more than one hour
3. You should always consume it as prescribed by the doctor

Alopecia - Is There A Way Ayurveda Can Be Of Help?

Alopecia - Is There A Way Ayurveda Can Be Of Help?

Alopecia is a medical term used for baldness. There are different sorts of alopecia, including alopecia areata. Alopecia areata is a condition that causes a person’s hair to fall out in patches. It is an autoimmune disease where the person’s own immune system attacks his body, the hair follicles in this case. When this happens, the individual's hair starts to fall out, usually in patches. The degree of hair loss varies from person to person.

Rarely, the person loses all the hair on his or her head (alopecia areata totalis) or whole body (alopecia areata universalis). The person’s genetics may trigger the autoimmune response of alopecia areata, alongside other unknown triggers. For a few people, hair becomes back yet drops out again later. Some people’s hair does grow back. Every case is exceptional. The condition usually occurs when white platelets attack the cells in the hair follicles, making them shrink.

While researchers are uncertain why these changes take place, it appears that hereditary traits are included, as alopecia areata will probably happen in a person who has a relative with the same illness. One in five individuals with the infection have a relative who has also developed alopecia areata. It is also believed that it mostly occurs in people with a family history of other autoimmune diseases such as arthritis or type 1 diabetes.

Alopecia areata cannot be cured but it can be managed in terms of symptoms and hair can grow back. By and large, alopecia areata is treated with medications that are used for different conditions. Treatment choices for alopecia areata include:

  1. Corticosteroids: These are anti-inflammatory medications that are recommended for immune system illnesses. Corticosteroids can be given in the form of an injection into the scalp or different areas, orally (as a pill), or applied as a balm or a cream.
  2. Topical immunotherapy: This kind of treatment might be used if the baldness or hair loss recurs. The irritation that the medicines cause may cause hair regrowth.
  3. Rogaine (minoxidil): This topical medication is now used as a treatment for hair loss. It for the most part takes around 12 weeks of treatment with Rogaine before hair starts to grow back.

A few people with alopecia areata use alternative therapy to treat their condition. These may include:

  1. Aromatherapy
  2. Acupuncture
  3. Herbal supplements
  4. Vitamins
  5. Wearing covers (wigs, caps, or scarves) to shield the head.
  6. A number of people with new-onset alopecia areata have had stress in life, for example, work, family, deaths, surgeries and accidents. Nonetheless, this has not been proven as a cause scientifically.
  7. Applying sunscreen to shield uncovered areas or patches from sunburns.
  8. Wearing shades to shield the eyes from the sun if the eyelashes have dropped out.

Ayurvedic Remedies - Are They Effective In Treating Joint Pains?

Ayurvedic Remedies - Are They Effective In Treating Joint Pains?

Joints are intersections between bones; they provide support to your body during movement. There are a host of conditions which might lead to joint pain; they are bursitis, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and gout. The most common joint pain disorders are knee pain, hip pain and shoulder pain

Ayurveda associates joint pain with loss of bone density in the joints. This problem is characterized by a feeling of discomfort and cracking sounds. If the condition is not treated, it might lead to immobilization of the joint. The condition of the bones tends to deteriorate as they do not receive enough nutrition.

The other cause that leads to joint pain is toxin accumulation in the joints. As the toxin accumulates, it leads to heavy and stiff joints. If preventive measures are not taken on time, continuous accumulation of toxins may lead to swollen joints.

The various ayurvedic remedies for joint pain are:

1. Diet
Focus on eating foods especially that are salty, sour and sweet in taste. Add healthy foods such as rye and quinoa along with ghee as they pacify the "vata" in your body. Focus on natural foods such as vegetables and fruits to your diet.

2. Herbs
Certain herbs such as turmeric help to treat joint pain. It contains curcumin that has anti-inflammatory properties which help in reducing the pain. You may also consume fenugreek seeds for its antioxidant content and anti-inflammatory properties.

3. Lifestyle changes
Make sure you exercise on a daily basis, do basic bodyweight exercises such as push-ups and squats to improve your strength. You may also start with yoga workouts to build flexibility and mobility in your body.

4. Smoking and alcohol
Limit smoking and alcohol consumption to keep your body healthy, and free from free radical damage. Alcohol may also cause you to put on weight, thus leading to obesity. Smoking may cause various problems in the lungs that may lead to breathing disorders.

Suffering From PCOS - Ayurveda Can Help You Treat It!

Suffering From PCOS - Ayurveda Can Help You Treat It!

PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome) is a common disorder that can be seen to be mainly affecting women of reproductive age. As the name indicates, PCOS results in the formation of a cyst(s) in either one or both the ovaries. The presence of cysts in the ovary wrecks havoc affecting the ovulation process to a great extent. As a result of PCOS, the eggs do not undergo maturation. A situation may also arise whereby, the eggs mature but the ovary does not release them.

In PCOS, there is an elevated production of the hormone Androgen (often referred to as male hormones). The higher the androgen level in females the more the complications including obesity, infertility, irregular periods, heart ailments, hypertension as well as diabetes and insulin resistance. Hirsutism (excessive presence of body hair, especially on the face, chin or chest), alopecia or acne problems are also commonly observed. Thus, the condition should be treated and managed at the earliest. Conventional treatments though available may not always produce the desired results. Of late, Ayurveda has been making a lot of noise for all the right reasons. In fact, a lot of women have been successfully treated for PCOS and the associated symptoms, all thanks to Ayurveda.

Ayurveda that has been in practice since the ancient times believes that a healthy body is one where there is a perfect balance between the various energies or doshas. As per Ayurvedic scriptures, there are three main doshas - Vata dosha (wind energy), Kapha dosha (water energy) and Pitta dosha (fire energy). A disruption of the equilibrium between the Vata, Kapha, and Pitta dosha is what triggers a diseased condition in a person.

PCOS is a problem resulting from the Kapha Dosha. According to Ayurveda, there are seven Dhatus (tissues) in our body. Some of the Dhatus affected by PCOS include Artava Dhatu (Female reproductive organ), Rasa Dhatu (plasma and lymph) and the Meda Dhatu or the adipose tissue.

The Ayurvedic approach to treat PCOS involves restoring the balance between the three doshas.

  1. The use of herbs such as Ashwagandha, Dandelion, Blue cohosh, Tulsi, Neem, Fenugreek, Castor oil, Sesame seeds, Flax seeds, goes a long way to treat the hormonal imbalance along with the associated symptoms of PCOS (infertility, diabetes, to name a few).
  2. In addition to the use of herbs, there are few pranayamas which work wonders in the case of PCOS by relaxing the whole body and restoring the balance between the doshas.
  3. Women with PCOS benefit immensely from Panchakarma. It is an Ayurvedic treatment that involves, oil massages, oil baths (Oleation), Fomentation (a process where the body undergoes intense sweating) to eliminate the toxins out of the body (detoxification) that may trigger the various disorders.
  4. Avoid foods with a high glycemic index. Instead, opt for foods such as grapefruits, cauliflower, peaches, onion, apples and other similar dietary options that have a low glycemic index.
  5. Severely obese patients should make an effort to shed the extra kilos.

Panchakarma Treatment For Sinusitis!

Bachelor of Ayurveda, Medicine and Surgery (BAMS), C.R.A.V

Panchakarma Treatment For Sinusitis!

Panchakarma is a unique treatment process followed in the ancient field of alternate medicine, Ayurveda. Over the years the practice has found takers not only in India but in several other countries, including the advanced ones such as the US. The recent opening of an Ayurveda kendra or center in New Jersey is ample proof of the popularity of this system of treatment. Practically every health condition is addressed through the panchakarma treatment and sinusitis is also included among them.

Different Levels of the Condition
Sinusitis is a form of inflammation inside the nasal passage that causes pain in the areas surrounding the nose and there are many causes for the condition to develop. Those who undergo the disorder, may experience different levels of sinusitis. It becomes essential for the physician to first diagnose if the sinusitis is acute, sub-acute, chronic or recurrent. Each type can show slightly different symptoms or last for longer durations. Starting from 4 weeks one could have sinusitis conditions lasting a whole of 8 weeks or even longer and there are those who experience it several times during a year.

Not Difficult to Diagnose
Someone with any level of sinusitis usually shows symptoms of a cold or nasal block and accumulation of mucus and so on. But there are simple diagnostic methods using which the doctors distinguish a common cold from sinusitis-like conditions. If the symptoms are severe, the doctor may order a scan done.

Panchakarma Can Offer Effective Remedies
Under the Ayurvedic system, the practitioner would first identify the ‘dosha’ and then go about prescribing the remedy. Since the condition is related to the presence of toxins, detoxification will be a primary form of addressing the issue. There are different methods prescribed within the panchakarma method of treatment. Among them, for sinusitis, Nasyam and Rasaayan therapies are the most frequently suggested ones for this condition.

  • Under the Nasyam method, the patient is generally asked to lie on his or her back and a specially prepared medicated oil is passed through the nostrils to clean the area. It can result in the condition not only getting cured, but can prevent it from recurring.
  • The other panchakarma treatment for sinusitis is Rasaayan. In reality, sinusitis is seen as an imbalance in the levels of fluids within the body and if the balance is restored, then health will automatically return. Based on this, the treatment of sinusitis is formulated using the appropriate herbs and elements needed to provide a healthy restoration of the nasal passage and removal of blockages.
  • If administered by professional Ayurveda practitioners, sinusitis, whichever type it is, can be effectively cured using the panchakarma treatment. As indicated, in many cases the remedy can be so useful that it can go beyond curing and can stop the condition from resurfacing again. That is the beauty of panchakarma.

Importance of Panchkarma Therapies for Belly Fat Reduction!

Importance of Panchkarma Therapies for Belly Fat Reduction!

Introduction to Panchkarma therapy: Panchkarma is not only a common term in today’s Ayurveda treatment, it has been put to use from the time of Acharya Susruta. While Ayurveda is a genuine and very effective field of medicine, its therapies are also to the point. Panchkarma, by definition, is a spa, or power massage with Ayurvedic help. It keeps the whole body fit and healthy by curing and also preventing diseases. It eliminates doshas and malas from the body and purifies the skin. Ayurvedic massage experts perform this therapy skillfully with dry herbal powder or herbal paste and medicated oil. They give the rubbing and strokes in the opposite direction of a conventional massage.

Brief Description: As the name says, Panchkarma is a combination of five different processes that are acted one after another. They are-

  1. Vamana (Emetic therapy)
  2. Virecana (Purgative therapy)
  3. Nasya (Inhalation therapy or Errhine)
  4. Anuvasana basti (Type of Enema)
  5. Niruha basti (Type of Enema)

These processes eliminate Kapha, Pitta and Vata and bring tenderness to the body. Before all these processes, it is important to check if the patient is physically and mentally capable of undergoing the treatment. So there are some pre-monitoring procedures where one must take the necessary precautions and diet. There are also post-treatment measures that consist of some special medicines and procedures.

Works in Belly Fat Reduction: Even though Panchkarma therapy mainly removes toxins from the skin, still Ayurvedic doctors have recommended it for fat reduction too. It reduces fat by removing the excess cellulite accumulated under the skin. The power massage gives rubbing strokes on certain pressure points for fat loss. There are two types of actions-

  1. Snigadh
  2. Ruksha

According to Susruta Samhita, there are three categories of actions-

  1. Utsadana
  2. Udgharshana
  3. Udvartana

Herbs Used In Panchkarma for Fat Loss: Amalaki, Bibhitaki and Haritaki are three herbs that are called Triphala. They are used to reduce cellulite and fat by rubbing and massaging as a paste on the body. All these three should be mixed in equal proportions before applying.

The formulas of pastes are different for Kapha-type and Pitta-type people.

Kapha: Ingredients Proportion

  • Amalaki 20%
  • Bibhitaki 20%
  • Haritaki 20%
  • Soap nut 10%
  • Pushkarmool 5%
  • Dried Ginger 5%
  • Vacha 5%
  • Black pepper 5%
  • Long pepper 5%
  • Barley 5%

Pitta: Ingredients Proportion

  • Nut grass 50%
  • Barley 20%
  • Amalaki 15%
  • Tagara 5%
  • Haritaki 5%
  • Gotu Kola 5%

There are two other formulas for fat reduction in Panchkarma-

  1. Kolakulathadi Choornam
  2. Kottamchukkadi Choornam

Pros and Cons:
Clearly, Ayurveda is a better option than chemical medicines because it does not harm the body in any way and it makes the skin beautiful. Although there may be a little pain, excessive dryness, thirst, weakness and stiffness as side effects of the therapy.

To conclude, even if there are some cons, Ayurveda is always better than anything else. So Panchkarma therapy is a well-recommended option for belly fat reduction.
