Any serious illness, especially painful ones, can make you tired along with bodyaches. But some quite minor illnesses can also leave you feeling washed out. Here are 10 health conditions that are known to cause fatigue. 1. Coeliac disease This is a type of food intolerance, where your body reacts badly when you eat gluten – a substance found in bread, cakes and cereals. 90% of us don’t know we have the condition, Other symptoms of coeliac disease, apart from tiredness, are diarrhoea, anaemia and weight loss. Your Doctor can check if you have coeliac disease through a blood test. 2. Anaemia One of the most common medical reasons for feeling constantly run down is iron deficiency anaemia. It affects around one in 20 men and post-menopausal women, but may be even more common in women who are still having periods. Typically, you’ll feel you can’t be bothered to do anything, your muscles will feel heavy and you’ll get tired very quickly. Women with heavy periods and pregnant women are especially prone to anaemia. 3. Chronic fatigue syndrome Chronic fatigue syndrome (also called myalgic encephalomyelitis or ME) is a severe and disabling tiredness that goes on for at least six months. There are usually other symptoms, such as a sore throat, muscle or joint pain and headache. 4. Sleep apnoea Sleep apnoea is a condition where your throat narrows or closes during sleep and repeatedly interrupts your breathing. This results in bad snoring and a drop in your blood's oxygen levels. The difficulty in breathing means that you wake up often in the night, and feel exhausted the next day. It’s most common in overweight, middle-aged men. Drinking alcohol and smoking makes it wor 5. Underactive thyroid An underactive thyroid gland means that you have too little thyroid hormone (thyroxine) in your body. This makes you feel tired. You’re also likely to put on weight and have aching muscles. It’s most common in women, and it happens more often as you get older. Your Doctor can diagnose an underactive thyroid by taking blood test 6. Diabetes One of the main symptoms of diabetes, a long-term condition caused by too much sugar in the blood, is feeling very tired. The other key symptoms are feeling very thirsty, going to the toilet a lot and weight loss. Your Doctor can diagnose diabetes with a blood test. 7. Glandular fever Glandular fever is a common viral infection that causes fatigue, along with fever, sore throat and swollen glands. Most cases happen in teenagers and young adults. Symptoms usually clear up within four to six weeks, but the fatigue can linger for several more months. 8. Depression As well as making you feel very sad, depression can also make you feel drained of energy. It can stop you falling asleep or cause you to wake up early in the morning, which makes you feel more tired during the day. 9. Restless legs This is when you get uncomfortable sensations in your legs, which keep you awake at night. You might have an overwhelming urge to keep moving your legs, a deep ache in your legs, or your legs might jerk spontaneously through the night. Whatever your symptoms, your sleep will be disrupted and of poor quality, so you’ll feel very tired throughout the day. 10. Anxiety Feeling anxious is sometimes perfectly normal. However, some people have constant, uncontrollable feelings of anxiety, which are so strong they affect their daily life. We call this generalised anxiety disorder (GAD). It is becoming more frequent in India. As well as feeling worried and irritable, people with GAD often feel tired. So either consult me with your present and past complaints.Menstrual history.,Family history or consult your doctor.

Quadriceps strengthening exercises- quad clenches: lie flat on your back or sit upright on a chair with leg kept horizontally on another surface. Now, tighten the muscle on the front of the thigh by pushing your knee down. You should feel your thigh muscles clench, hold for 3 secs. Repeat 10 times twice a day. Short arcs: lie flat on your back or sit upright with your leg placed horizontally on a flat surface like a chair or bed. Place a rolled up towel under the knee. Pull your toes towards you and clench you thigh muscles. Slowly lift your foot up off the bed until your knee is straight (keep your knee resting on the towel). Hold for 3 secs and slowly lower them on the chair. Repeat 10 times twice a day. Straight leg raise: lie flat on your back. One leg and knee will be straight and other leg should be bent. Pull your toes towards you and tighten/clench the muscle on the front of the thigh, locking your knee straight. Lift your foot up in the air, about 6 inches off the bed. Hold for 3 secs and slowly lower the leg. The knee must remain straight the whole time you are doing this exercise.

What You Need to Know About Neck Sprains and Strains

What You Need to Know About Neck Sprains and Strains

A neck strain and sprain is not a serious injury. However, they can still cause significant dysfunction and pain.
Causes of Neck Strain
The anatomy of the cervical spine is such that it not only houses, but also protects the spinal cord. Along with this it supports the head and allows it for mobility and motion. But this area, which allows the spine to be flexible can also leave it vulnerable for injury.

Triggers for the onset of neck muscle strain can be:

  1. Too much time spent in an uncomfortable position, such as humping over the steering wheel while driving, bending over the computer monitor, talking on the phone while placing it in the crook of the neck.
  2. Sleeping on a very high or too firm pillow can lead to an uncomfortable position of the head thus leading to the strain of the neck
  3. Carrying heavy objects on one side of the body
  4. Any trauma that might have impacted the neck, such as an accident, whiplash or a fall that might have had a head landing

Most events of a neck muscle strain or the soft tissue sprain, such as the tendons and ligaments lead to stiff neck along with pain in shoulders. There is also pain and difficulty in moving the neck or head.

Neck muscle strain remedies

Minor strains in the tendons, ligaments and muscles of the neck usually heal within a day or two. But till the symptoms subside, there are a few self care remedies that are effective in reducing the stiffness and pain. These are:

  1. Application of cold or ice packs: The cold reduces the inflammation, which in turn allows the strain to heal. This ice pack should be applied for 20 minutes interval in the first 24 hours.
  2. Application of heat: Heat helps in bringing the nutrient rich blood to the affected area in order to stimulate a healing response. Moist heat as well as heat from a hot shower or bath can be used. Some people might find relief from applying heat wraps such as thermacare.
  3. Over-the-counter or OTC medications: Anti-inflammatory medication, such as naproxen and ibuprofen reduces inflammation, thereby leading to the reduction in pain. Pain relieving medicines such as acetaminophen can also be taken as this reduces the perception of pain.
  4. Massage of the affected area: A gentle massage in the affected area helps in stimulating the blood flow of the area which in turn helps in a quick healing.

Pl consult cardiac physician immediately as you have pain radiating in your left arm. As a first aid during the pain press your both sides of your little finger nail 20 times. This will reduce your pain immediately. Further take flax seed oil or flax seed powder regularly to eliminate any blocks in your arteries. Your weight is incorrect and take care while giving particulars.

Hi thanks for your query and welcome to lybrate. I am Dr. Akshay from fortis hospital, new delhi. There are many causes for pain in legs and especially around ankles, so it can be a manifestation of a systemic disease, deficiency of vitamins like vitamin d, electrolyte imbalance, stress fractures or it can be due to involvement of anatomical structures especially muscles in legs and tendons, blood vessels etc. Actually you require a thorough evaluation and appropriate investigations before anything can be suggested, from an orthopaedic point of view, I would like to see: cbc, esr, crp, serum electrolytes and serum vitamin d levels. Do not hesitate to contact me if you need any further assistance. You can also discuss your case and treatment plans with me in a greater detail in a private consultation. Thanks & regards

First is- worst pelvic pain! second is- excessive hair growth on full face and on whole body! it disturbed my whole life! both has become a big full stop of my life. I spent almost 75 % and all my savings into to solve these two problems. From past 2 years I am doing nothing. I don't have even a single rupee. I don't want to commit suicide. So that I am trying to find out where's the main problem exactly with the help of gynecologist and endocrinologist. 1. Worst pelvic pain since 18 to 19 years has been passed:- here I am describing about pelvic pain: period started-at the age of 13 it was regular till dec 2013 1 month delayed- since dec 2013 to oct 2013 (almost 1 year) after having norlut- n 2-2 in a day for 5 days (2nd dec 2014 to 6 dec 2014) then period started also in the month of 11th dec 2014. And then jan 10th 2015. It was also fully painful. Pelvic pain type - (extremely sharp, aching, crampy) pelvic pain when periods started, before till dec 2013, migraine like head ache when - 1 day before and after 6 day of the periods, till dec 2013 after dec 2013 pelvic pain and migraine like head ache - even on other days too. Pelvic pain location (both side on'v' shape) pain duration (4 days) intensity (10? worst? the pain is) 2nd excessive hair growth type of hair on full face - black, little long than normal. Stared at the age of 13 -14 on beard area & neck area- excessive, black, thick, long. Started at the age of 17 -18-19 on whole body- excessive, black, long, thick on legs, thighs, hips, bikini area & full area of abdomen and on chest and on underarms. Excessive, long, black on arms. I have taken lost of medicine, tonics, homeopathy, english, ayurvedic since 18 -19 years. Last medicine for pelvic pain is combiflame recent medicine for pelvic pain and migraine is dico- liv. But all are useless actually. Even all tests are like testosterone, fsh, lh, amh, dheas, ultrasound are normal then can these problem of hair growth and pelvic pain raise because of hypothyroidism? or is there any reason behind that? please give me your opinion. My tsh level was 8.56 on 20 jan 2012 7.60 on 28 feb 2013 8.93 on 5 nov 2013 7.03 on 2 dec 2014 so kindly tell me should I start the thyroid medicine? or should wait for months? if you say yes I should have to take medicine then how much mcg I will have to start 25 or 50 mcg and which company? but I have some doubts. Because apart from these problems like excessive hair growth on face and whole body, pelvic pain, cold hand and feet in winters, hair fall there's no another any such a symptoms. Kindly solve this puzzle please Dr. I shall be very thankful to you. These 4 days are like I am traveling into hell and feeling like to commit suicide. Nobody can understand my these problems. I can only say that your symptoms are not related to hypothyroidism. After hearing your history, the case is too complicated and long term to consult online. I can only suggest that you consult a proper medical endocrinologist for a second opinion.
