Now a days are of viral infection be careful. Cold,Sneezing, sore throat, a stuffy nose, coughing -fever,bodyache,headache,occured in viral infection. What can you do for your cold or cough symptoms? besides drinking plenty of fluids and getting plenty of rest, you may want to take medicines. There are lots of different cold and cough medicines, and they do different things. Nasal decongestants - unclog a stuffy nose...i.e ................ nasal dop/spray.....nasivion Cough suppressants - quiet a cough...................................... syp. Brozedax Expectorants - loosen mucus so you can cough it up.............syp...zeet expectorant Antihistamines - stop runny noses and sneezing.....................tab/syp....levocetirizine Pain relievers - ease fever, headaches, and minor aches and pains.......tab..flucold plus . Here are some other things to keep in mind about cold and cough medicines. Read labels, because many cold and cough medicines contain the same active ingredients. Taking too much of certain pain relievers can lead to serious injury. Do not give cough medicines to children under four, and don't give aspirin to children. Not helpful uses of antibiotics medicines.you should be also go for tests cbc,

Common ear infections: What you should know about them

MS - ENT(Gold Medalist), MBBS
ENT Specialist, Delhi
Common ear infections: What you should know about them

The most common ear infections happen because of bacterial or viral growth in the middle ear, the part which lies just behind the ear drum. Middle-ear infections can be very painful and children are most commonly reported in children. Most of these infections are caused by the blockage of the Eustachian tube, which connects the ear and the throat, causing the build-up of fluids and swelling. Here is a guide to the most common forms of ear infections and their symptoms, ranging from the acute to the chronic.

Acute infections have intense symptoms but can be cured with time and treatment. They generally last for shorter durations.

In Chronic cases of infections, the patient complains of recurrent symptoms multiple times. Chronic ear infections have the potential of causing permanent damage to the ear.

Symptoms reported by most patients with Ear infections:

1. Pain in the ear (Mild to severe): This is caused due to increased pressure owing to the blockage of the Eustachian tube. Collection of fluid inside the ear would increase the intensity of pain in most cases. Children will keep tugging at their ear and most likely be cranky.
2. Redness and swelling: Both of these are inevitable accompanying symptoms in case of any infection in the body.
3. Oozing of the fluids: The blockage leads to the fluid being released from the ear which can be watery, thick yellow or mixed with blood depending on the severity and type of infection.
4. Fever
5. Difficulty in sleeping.
6. In some cases when the infection spreads, difficulty in balancing the body is experienced as body balance is maintained by ears.
7. The patient might also experience increased irritability.
8. Ear infections can also cause a hearing problem if the condition continues to go untreated.

Ear infections should be promptly dealt with to prevent long-term damages. So here is what should be done when you have ear pain symptoms.

1. Consult an ENT who will prescribe pain medication as the first line of treatment.
2. After the necessary tests are done, antibiotics are prescribed in most cases by the doctor. Other medications for palliative treatment (to ease the symptoms) are administered. However in a few rare cases, the infection might be because of non-bacterial causes in which antibiotics might not cure the state.
3. In case the problem keeps recurring, one must visit the doctor again and get further tests and treatment done.

As prevention is always better than cure, care should be taken to avoid all chances of carrying the infection to your ear. Maintain cleanliness in and around, especially in the case of children.

For further queries; we'd be happy to help!

When I sleep, my left nostril gets clogged if I sleep on my left side and the right nostril if I sleep on my right side. Is this the start of the sinusitis? what should I do?

M B B S, M. D (Internal Medicine)
General Physician, Nellore
It is a normal phenomenon. It is called nasal cycling. At any given time, we are mostly breathing through one nostril only. You can test yourself at any time. You will find that most of your breathing is through one nostril only. Usually, people do not notice any change except when they are having cold, running nose etc. If the patient has noticed it even when there is no cold, then it probably is first time observation by patient or patient has hypertrophied turbinates. But, it is unlikely to be hypertrophied turbinates since you are saying it has started both sides at the same time. You have merely made an observation of something that has always been happening.

It is not possible to comment on your case without having a detailed examination of the patient and relevant investigations. It is good to communicate to your attending doctor about your concerns and he is a better position to help you out with this. If you feel unsatisfied with current treatment, you please seek a second opinion from another specialist on your issue.

I am suffering from sinus infection from the past 6 months. And I had consulted a ENT specialist. It was seems to be ok last month. But again I am facing the same problem. Whqt is the cure for this disease from its root?

MBBS, MS - ENT
Ear-Nose-Throat (ENT) Specialist, Ahmedabad
Generally sinus infection is preceded by allergy. You must avoid your allergens to prevent cold which in turn prevents sinusitis. Try to avoid dust smokes perfumes and pollutants. Use facemask in such situations. Prevention is better than cure. Take regular steam inhalation. But if you have structural block in your nose and sinus that has to correct surgically.
