Hi thanks for your query and welcome to lybrate. I am Dr. Akshay from fortis hospital, new delhi. Actually pain at calf region can be due to many reasons, commonly it is muscular in nature although it can also be due to nerves, tendons, vessels etc. My advise to you for initial 2-3 weeks will be: - ice packs application intensively with elevation of your limbs at night - take a short course of anti-inflammatory medication as per your body's suitability - stop your physical activity till pain completely subsides - intensive physical therapy, training and proper muscle conditioning - slow resumption of physical activities with proper pre match warm up and stretching of muscles and short increments in duration of physical activity each day as per pain tolerance. - we will get some blood tests for you - serum vitamin d and serum potassium levels, esr and crp once you have all these reports then you can contact me as I can advise you for proper supplementation do not hesitate to contact me if you need any further assistance.

Advice. Avoid sitting cross legged. Avoid squatting- quadriceps exercises- lie straight, make a towel role and put it under the knee, press the keen against the role, hold it for 20 secs. Repeat 20 times twice a day. This will help relieve some pain. Core strengthening exercise- straight leg raised with toes turned outward, repeat 10 times, twice a day. Hams stretching- lie straight, take the leg up, pull the feet towards yourself, with a elastic tube or normal belt. Repeat 10 times, twice a day. Sports taping- stretch the tape from both ends and apply on the affected area contrast fomentation (hot and cold). Ankle stretch calves get a custom made insole. Hams stretching. Sports taping. Hot fomentation.

1) do massage with warm sesame oil or suitable oil for 15 min. Afterwards take hot fomentation for 10 min. 2) start natural calcium supplement. 3) do regular stretching exercise 4) in yoga do bhujangasan, halasan & suryanamaskar. Tips For Fast & Less Painful Recovery Post Surgery!

Knee joint surgery is a long and arduous procedure in most causes. However, outpatient procedures sometimes take less than an hour and require minimal recovery time. It is commonly conducted in cases of:

  1. Progressive arthritisa
  2. Injury, dislocation or fracture
  3. To fix deformities

If one is aware of these informative tips post-surgery, recovery can be a less painful and easier process :

  1. Clean linen sheets to prevent infection to the wound
  2. In case of pain, ice packs over the bandage can be used. However, one should be cautious as extended use of ice can result in cold burns
  3. Installation of preventive fall equipment is necessary to ensure that the patient does not sustain further injuries post-surgery.
  4. Knee surgery recovery can be very time consuming in which case, the patient may experience high levels of anxiety, and depression. A close friend should be available in times of emotional need to reduce negative feelings.
  5. Crutches and other supportive objects should perpetually be in close proximity to the patient as it can be very difficult for patients to reach their close destination without the help of these necessities when in need.
  6. In case of intensive pain attacks, the patient should be taught relaxation techniques such as breathing in and out or breathing intensively in settled intervals
  7. The patient should be put on a strict diet consisting of fruits, vegetables, carbohydrates and healthy fat to allow faster recovery
  8. The patient should also get 8-10 hours of sleep daily to allow the system to recover on its own
  9. The patient should not put pressure on their body during the recovery time, especially the injured area

It is a prerequisite for the families and loved ones of the patients to show emotional support as feelings of isolation can cause further pain to the patient. Along with that, the patient should keep a positive attitude during the course of their bed-rest time. Eat well first, then take rest as your body needs and don't get tensed be relaxed. If possible stop watching T.V. and in front of system and mobiles for longer period of time. Try to yeah take hot water with eucalyptus oil drops in that and inhale well . Hopes you will be alright when you do these. Stop taking medicines.

Causes of knee pain
1. Acute knee pain

Sudden knee pain is usually due to an injury, the common ones being:
Tendon injuries: tendons attach muscle to bone, and are prone to injury, especially in athletes. Sudden rupture partial or complete will cause pain, and prevent normal movement of the joint. More commonly, inflammation sets in, especially in the quadriceps and patellar tendons (tendonitis)

Ligament injuries: the knee has two ligaments inside the joint and two outside, connecting the femur and tibia, and stabilising the joint. Tearing any of the these ligaments often results from contact sports, or a heavy fall, and causes immediate pain, which is worse on walking or bending the knee. Damage to the internal ligaments may cause the knee to give way when weight is put on the leg.

Meniscus injuries: the meniscus is a cartilage cushion inside the joint. A tear of the meniscus can cause pain, worsening over 24 to 48 hours. The tear may lift a piece of the cartilage off which then flaps between the knee bones (like a bucket-handle) this can cause locking of the joint, preventing full straightening of the leg. Alternatively, a piece of the meniscus can break off, and move around in the joint space, interfering with normal movement. Old or repeated injuries can lead to degeneration of the meniscus.

Dislocation: this commonly affects the kneecap, and is easily seen. Dislocation may become a recurrent problem.

Gout: although this is a chronic underlying disorder, an attack of gout occurs suddenly, causing intense pain and swelling which can last up to two weeks, then clear, leaving normal joint movement.

Bursitis: this is inflammation of the fluid-filled sacs outside the joint, over which the tendons slide. Commonly the bursa at the front of the knee (pre-patellar bursa) is affected, causing pain when kneeling.

Ilio-tibial band: athletes, especially runners, are prone to this disorder, in which the ligament from the hip bone to the tibia is tight, and chafes against the outer femur

Osgood-schlatter disease is an overuse problem found mainly in athletic teenagers, and can affect one or both knees.

Septic arthritis can follow an injury. In addition to pain, the patient will be ill and feverish.

2. Chronic knee pain

This is often due to a previous injury, but is associated with several underlying medical conditions.

Osteoarthritis is the commonest type. It is an age-related condition, sometimes called wear and tear arthritis, and is caused by gradual degeneration of the joint cartilage. The pain varies from day to day, is often worse in the mornings, and eventually leads to a stiff joint.

Rheumatoid arthritis is a destructive auto-immune disease, often involving both knee joints. Acute flare-ups alternate with quiescent periods. Pain, stiffness & swelling eventually lead to loss of mobility and a destroyed, deformed joint.

Chondromalacia patellae describes a condition of pain under the kneecap, due to mild arthritis of the patella. It is common in young women. Pain is worse after sitting, or with rising from the chair or going up stairs, and patients report a sensation of grating under the kneecap.

Tumours: malignant tumours of bone (like osteogenic sarcoma) can cause pain and swelling near the knee. This must be excluded in a young patient who has no history of sport injury or any underlying medical condition.

Consult physiotherapist and learn exercise. Start with calcium; multivitamin and. Glucosamine supplement for 2 month minimum. She will improve. Add 2 glass of milk in diet. Improve protein intake also.

Medical sciences are not magic. You have to keep patience. Apply ice, do not take weight on leg. It takes 3-4 weeks for healing.

I am 24 yr my feet pains usually when I feel little tired within 12 hr from awaking but the pain rose up till my knees on the back side of the leg when I am exhausted I didn't rest(sleep) immediately. What to do now?

According age and heart problem take physiotherapy treatment and gentle exercises of knee towel compression put a roll behind the knee and do press for 10 sec then realise and quadriceps exercise.

The symptoms are suggestive of neuropathy or involvement of the nerves. This can be due to diabetes. It has nothing to do with the knee problem or the surgery. She needs to meet a neurologist who will help her get rid of this distressing symptom

Requires detailed examination and investigation. Preliminary investigations suggested: hb, tlc, dlc, esr, blood sugar fasting & pp, uric acid vit d urine r/e x-ray of the affected part. Anyway it may be tried sleep on a hard bed with soft bedding on it. Spring beds, folding beds or thick mattress are harmful use no pillow under the head. Do hot fomantation paracetamol 250mg od & sos x 5days. Caldikind plus 1tab od x10. Do neck, back, knee & general exercises. It may have to be further investigated. Do not ignore it. Let it not become beginning of a bigger problem. Make sure that patient is not allergic to any of the medicines that he/she is going to take. If it does not give relief in 4-5days, inform.

Do not ignore your knee pain for long time it may damage your knee joints so you can consult any good orthopaedic surgeon for the better treatment. They may help you with better options.

Dear you can follow these methods for relief from back back pain- * first correct your sitting posture. Do not bend your lower back. You can use lumber belt for support. * do regular back strength exercises. Move your clockwise and anticlock wise. * do not sleep on very soft bed, sleep on slight hard cotton mattress. * do tadasana and bhjangasana for back strengthening. If you can not understand these asans you can consult me. * take calcium rich diet and calcium and vitamin d supplements regularly. *do not take any heavy weight or heavy work. * if you are over weight then follow a good and effective diet plan to loose some kilos of weight. * you can take guggalu tablets of himalaya for fast relief.
