There are some babies difficult to manage, since no one knows exact etiology. But rest assured, if your child is growing well despite this issue, there is nothing wrong with the child. Just a passing phase, child will grow out of it. Talk with the child to give her assurance, though she will not understand the verbal communication, she will understand nonverbal communication, body language. Sometimes parental anxiety makes the things worse. If the parents, the base on which children rely, look anxious and panicked, children feel more insecure and cry a lot.

Know The Causes Behind Stunted Growth In Children!

Know The Causes Behind Stunted Growth In Children!

Everyone wants their babies to healthy and grow up to be a healthy-wealthy person. However, little they focus on this issue or are capable of giving their infants the best of medical standards. Problems show up in children early and if overlooked, may hamper their future life a lot. Constant check-ups are necessary to be it pre-birth or post the birth of a baby, and for this, a parent should always be in contact of a pediatrician.
Pediatrics is the medicinal branch that involves the health care of babies, children, and adolescents. It is recommended that people should be under pediatric care up to age 21. Pediatricians are involved with important tests that are standardized by World Health Organisation Child Growth Standards.

Stunted Growth Of Infants and Children
Also known as nutritional stunting, it is a distinctive reduced growth rate in human body development. Stunted growth is the primary manifestation of undernutrition (or malnutrition) and recurrent infections after birth and early childhood. Another main reason is the malnutrition during fetal development brought by a malnourished mother. The accurate definition of stunting according to WHO stands for the “height for age” value to be lower than two standard deviations of World Health Organisation Child Growth Standards.

In 2012, an estimated 25 percent of children under 5 years of age i.e. ~162 million children were stunted. More of this count nearing 90 percent lies only in two continents, Africa and Asia. The affected children may never regain their loss of height, and most of them will never gain the equal weight.

Health effects
Apart from shorter stature, the adolescent may get hit by the greater risk of illness, delayed mental development, lowered cognitive capacity and women with stunted growth have a higher risk of complications during delivery due to the smaller pelvis, and the child could have low birth weight during birth.

Causes of Stunted growth
Apart from malnutrition and some rare genetic disorders, South Asia and most developing nations are having a higher number of stunted children due to poor maternal nutrition, poor feeding practices, and poor sanitation.

Maternal nutrition
Poor breastfeeding during pregnancy and maternal nutrition could be a leading cause for the stunted growth of the child. Also, women who are suffering from anemia or are underweight during pregnancy are more likely to perpetuate the intergenerational transmitting of stunting.

Sanitation
Ingestion of a high number of fecal bacteria through the soiled finger in a poorly sanitized area leads to intestinal infections. This affects the nutritional status of his/her by diminishing appetite, reducing nutrition absorption and increasing nutrient loss.

Feeding practices
Inadequate feeding, lack of vital nutrients, poor calorie intake can lead to stunted growth. Minimum requirements should be met in the diet in proper frequency to avoid malnutrition.

A Note for feeding mothers
Lactating mothers should get themselves proper nutrition, and if they are in doubt of their health should postpone the decision of having a child.

Chronic diarrhoea, Celiac disease, thyroid disorders and growth hormone deficiency also contribute, significantly, to short stature. Regular measurement of height & weight on a growth chart by a trained Pediatrician helps to pick up the lags in these vital growth and development parameters.

2 Months old baby has loose motions, is being fed on similac advance any home remedy?

2 Months old baby has loose motions, is being fed on similac advance any home remedy?
Stop bottle feeding, if given. Breast feed your baby, if there is no medical contraindication. If stools are non watery, baby is active and gaining weight properly, it can be a normal activity for this age. It will be better to get your baby examined by a pediatrician.

Mother might be having problem of retracted nipples which the baby can't hold in his mouth. So help of a senior lady can help this by doing massage of the nipples. Always try to give breast feed directly through sucking otherwise milk secretions will be reduced gradually. --you can use a blunt forcef to hold the nipple and put in mouth of baby. --baby's are very smart. After feeding with bottle (which require no effort) they will avoid breast sucking as it requires effort. --always avoid feeding with bottle.

Colic Pain - How To Treat It

Fellowship in Andrology, DNB-Urology , MS - General Surgery, MBBS

Colic Pain - How To Treat It

The word colic directly refers to the colon. Colic pain is a sharp abdominal pain followed by bouts of crying usually occurring in infants below the age of one year. The pain only last for a short period of time ranging from a few weeks to a couple of months. Very few number of babies will cry endlessly indicating towards an underlying condition.

It is mainly characterized by sharp crying for supposedly no apparent reason, irregular sleep patterns, and restlessness or owing to deviation from normal postures. The apparent causes of colic pain include indigestion and negative reaction of the sensitive gut to the breast or formula milk, although no concrete cause of the state has been discovered.

Doctors often suggest home remedies such as swaddling, pacifiers, holding and comforting the baby and more frequent feedings to reduce the condition. Since it is so common among infants and relatively less harmful, no proper medication is usually given. Physicians suggest mothers to reduce the content of caffeine, alcohol or spice in their diet. Sometimes a warm bath, burping the baby or going on more frequent walks is useful. Background music draws the attention of the baby and hence drives their focus, away from the abdominal pains.

Colic pains are mainly treated by care rather than medicine. The baby is made to feel comfortable and the distress is reduced just by being around the infant. The primary care giver plays an important role in consoling the child and helping them get through the sudden pain which further plays a significant role in personality development. Colic pains are extremely short lived and probably one of the first few challenges of parenthood. They are primarily dealt with care and feeding except in extreme cases where medicinal cures such as lactase drops and simethicone drops are used to treat the abdominal pain. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a doctor and ask a free question.

Hello! the symptoms you told might be good sign of tooth eruption. Though it is about 4 months late sometimes due to certain reasons it happens. Please visit an expert dentist and you may be advised for a full mouth x-ray which is rarely indicated in small babies but in your case a modification and exception can be made. It will reveal the actual problem. Thank you.

This seems to be a normal sibling reaction after arrival of second child. The child is to be kept prepared for arrival of newborn. Anyway just extend your love & affection to her as usual without any hesitation, talk to her a lot, give her time & make her feel she is equally impotantant to you & newborn has come to give her company.

Generally a viral fever may last upto 4 - 5 days and in rare cases can last upto a week also, keep giving paracetamol evry 4-6 hours so that temperature is under control. If fever goes beyond 4-5 days you can get few blood test done to rule out any bacterial infection, if its bacterial infection, need to start on course of antibiotics which your pd will prescribe accordingly.

Hi lybrate-user, babies skin are very sensitive. But no matter how well you are getting time for yourself, you will always put your baby first. Even when you are thinking of ways to get a fairer and glowing skin, you will want to look for ways to get your baby’s skin fairer and softer! Here are a few home remedies for you: 1. Nice & Warm Oil Massage - You must have been told by your mother or grandmother a hundred times that massaging your newborn with a hot oil is good for his bones and muscles to get them stronger. But what they didn’t tell you is that the hot oil massage also improves the complexion of your baby. It adds another protective layer of moisture on their skin and this results in mild pinkish glow and blossom. 2. Using An Optimum Water Temperature For Bathing - As much as it essential for the adults to take care of the water temperature they are bathing with, it is even more important that you keep an optimum water temperature for your baby’s bath. Otherwise, too hot or cold water will dry out your young one’s sensitive skin and make it appear dull and dark. 3. Soft Baby Scrub - Don’t worry, we won’t ask you to use your everyday scrub on your delicate baby. Instead, you can prepare a baby scrub using baby oil, chickpea flour, milk, rose water, and an evenly grounded gram pulse. Gently scrub away the impurities and this will also improve the blood circulation in your baby’s body, that will lead to a fairer complexion ultimately. 4. Mild Baby Friendly Body Pack - Your young one’s body is totally new to the environmental factors, with more sensitive skin than any adult. Fostering the little one’s skin with a mild body pack will nurture their skin and give them an evenly fair skin tone. Mix sandalwood, milk, saffron and turmeric to make a smooth paste and apply it on your baby’s body. Leave it on for 10 minutes and wash off with lukewarm water. This will not only make him fairer but will also protect him from various skin infections. Do this once in a week. 5. Complete Moisturization - The most important and essential step in the baby skin care routine is the moisturization. You can apply a good and mild baby skin-friendly moisturizer once a day. 6. Give A Regulated Sunbath - We understand that protecting your little one from the harsh rays of the sun is essential, but some natural vitamin D is necessary for the skin to stay bright and healthy as well. Use a pram or shed to protect your baby from the impact of direct sunlight. 7. Fresh Fruit Juices - Fruit juices are a great option for babies above 3 months. Feeding your baby a fresh juice of grapes will help increase the sheen of the epidermis and fruits like oranges & apples will improve your baby’s overall health. Hope this helps. Good Luck.

Age of giving dental braces

BDS, Post Graduate Diploma in Clinical Research, Certified Implantologist, Certified LASER dentist
Dentist, Kolkata
The preferable age of giving dental braces is around twelve years as it takes advantage of the prepubertal growth spurt. Before that sometimes the teeth may look crooked but we call it ugly duckling stage which is a temporary transitional phase and so await till all the permanent teeth erupt. However sometimes braces can be given before in special cases like cross bite.

Child's Addiction To Sweets - How To Deal With It?

MD - Paediatrics, MBBS
Pediatrician, Jaipur
Child's Addiction To Sweets - How To Deal With It?

If your child has become increasingly addicted to sweets and other sugary items, this addiction can lead to certain behavioral problems (like mood swings, irritability, anger, etc) in children. Moreover, a high sugar intake can lead to your child falling prey to serious diseases and conditions, including diabetes, obesity and cardiovascular diseases

Here's what you can do to break your child's indulgent habits and wean him from ill-health causing culprits like cakes, ice creams, candies, chocolates and rich and creamy desserts etc.

1. Practice what you preach -
In order to develop healthy eating habits in your child, it is imperative for you as a parent to lead by example. When it comes to weaning your child from sugary foods and sweets, you yourself should limit your intake. So, if you tell your child to avoid sweets but love sweets yourself, you'd be setting a bad example by eating them yourself and not letting your child have them. The best thing to do is to be a role model to your child as children learn everything from their parents.

2. Curb consumption of sugar by deferring intake to a later date -
Instead of depriving your child completely, it would prove to be more useful to tell them that they could have sweets on some other day. This is because if you deny him his indulgence, your child would invariably go on an eating spree the moment an opportunity arises. A study on a group of restrained eaters and non-diet individuals revealed that restrained eaters were found to consume more food than the non-dieting individuals. Not knowing when they could have their favourite foods again, they went on an eating spree.
Make frequent yet small offerings of sweets while explaining to him the importance of moderation and why he/she shouldn't overindulge but space out sugar intake.

3. Try the 90/10 rule -
Teaching older children the 90/10 principle is another sure-shot way of breaking your child?'s addiction to sweets. The rule calls for 90% of the diet to be made up of healthy food with the remaining 10% being devoted to foods your child wants to indulge in such as junk food, sweets or foods with high sugar content. The total calorie intake that arises from consumption of about 10% or 1-2 fun foods is only about 100-200 calories everyday.

4. Present your child with healthy alternatives to sugary items -
The next time your child wants to indulge in his sugar craving, instead of giving a processed sugary food, give healthier sweet foods like dates, honey or a fresh sweet fruit. Consult an expert & get answers to your questions!

You should ask your son if anything is bothering him in school or at tuition center or something else. You have to take the child into confidence. Inquire the matter from his friends, know about his company. You can also take the help of child psychologist
