My father had gone through open surgery and doctor had replaced a damaged aortic and mitral valve with a metallic valve. He is taking acitrom tablet regularly. From last one week he is having tingling and numbness in his head and pain on left side of his face. His PT/INR value was around 4.5 when we checked last time a month ago. Will this be a serious problem? We do not have any specialists and good diagnostic centers in our area.

Hi thanks for your query and welcome to lybrate. I am Dr. Akshay from fortis hospital, new delhi. You have to first of all differentiate between pain due to a renal colic and lower back region. You pain due to a renal stone has to be managed as per urologist. As far as pain in the lower back region is concerned, there are many causes of pain in lower back region. It can be due to faulty posture, related to weak muscles, issues with intervertebral disc, narrowing of spinal canal, any bony instability besides many other, so accurate diagnosis is the key to proper management of the condition. You will have to elaborate your problem as to a detailed discussion of your back pain which means duration of pain and mode of onset. I would also like to ask you if it is associated with any leg pain or any other neurological symptoms like numbness, paraesthesias (electrical shock like abnormal sensations) or any weakness in limbs. Please also tell me about any associated symptoms like fever, weight loss etc. What medications you generally take and what has been your treatment history till now for existing problem. Do not hesitate to contact me if you need any further assistance. You can also discuss your case and treatment plans with me in a greater detail in a private consultation.

Physiotherapy and Preventing Back and Neck pain
Back pain and neck pain are common problems for adults. The best way to deal with back, neck and other joint or muscle problems is to prevent them from happening in the first place! 70% of back problems are caused by activities of daily living. These can often be avoided by paying attention to your posture, lifting heavy items properly, exercising regularly and strengthening your core, and sleeping on your side or back, and on a good mattress.

Shoulder pain can be a result of injury or disease of the shoulder joint. Injury can affect any of the ligaments, bursae, or tendons surrounding the shoulder joint. Injury can also affect the ligaments, cartilage, menisci and bones of the joint. Some minor shoulder pain can be treated at home. Icing the shoulder for 15 to 20 minutes, three or four times a day for two to three days can help reduce pain. Use an ice bag or wrap ice in a towel (putting ice directly on your skin can cause frostbite). Rest the shoulder and avoid any movements that might cause pain. Simple shoulder exercises can help to stretch and strengthen muscles and rotator cuff tendons. If you have severe pain please see a physiotherapist for pain relief modalities and to find out the root cause of your pain. Best wishes.

Hello lybrate user backpain can be due to muscle strain or sprain as you have already told about your heavy work related problem. Sometimes due to overloading, abrupt unbalanced movements or heavy lifts with improper posture causes increase strain on discs &ligaments. It can be cure by maintaining proper position of spine while sitting, standing, working, walking, etc. Bed rest combined with thermotherapy gives better relief.
