My mother is 60 years old, I want to check for cancer of any type for her, she is not capable of sustaining gastroscopy, is there any test available to check for cancer other than gastroscopy. She is suffering from acidity a lot.

There is no single test to detect all types of cancer. A gastroscopy is to assess the stomach, a colonoscopy is to assess the large intestine (colon). A mammography is used to assess breast cancer. An ultrasonography is used to assess the abdomen and pelvis for ovarian and uterine tumours. A good option would be to get a health check up done which has cancer screening protocols.

Hi, This is regarding my dad. He is a patient who was having maxillary cancer. His left jaw has been removed completely and operated multiple times. Now his mouth opening is very limited with no denture. Now currently he is cancer free but has tooth pain and his lower tooth has cavity in it. Due to the limited opening the Oncologist he visits said nothing can be done for the tooth. Would you know a way to help him with the pain and suggesting a solution?

DNB, MBBS
Oncologist, Faridabad
Has he received radiation therapy as well? he can go for mouth opening exercise and physiotherapy. Prosthesis are available to help him with or simply with icecream spoons making a stack and try inserting in mouth. Dental surgeons can try opening it under anaesthesia if some procedure needs to be done. Please get opg or ct scan done t to check for the reasons for pain.

Sir I want to know the symptoms of mouth cancer and if someone smoke once in week then is it possible chance of cancer. Sandeep.

MCh - Surgical Oncology, FEBS - Fellow of European Board of Surgical Oncology
Oncologist, Navi Mumbai
Please look out for any white lesion in the mouth. Ulcers that do not heal. Or any other swelling Smoking can not only cause mouth cancer but also cancer of the food pipe, lungs, stomach, pancreas etc. Best way to avoid cancer, is to stop smoking. No number is the right number to avoid cancer. Of course more the cigarettes, more the chances.

There are no lumps on my breasts but they are sagging with wrinkles and tiny pores ,there is pain in my left chest since 1 week, is it breast cancer.

C.S.C, D.C.H, M.B.B.S
General Physician,
It is not breast cancer. Doing pushups may not improve the appearance of the actual breasts, but by strengthening the muscles behind the breasts, it can give your bust a slight lift. (And will be great for your back and shoulders too, of course.)

Kidney cancer is one of the top ten most common cancers, and it is most often discovered in men over fifty, according to the American Cancer Society. What are the symptoms of kidney cancer?

One can experience vague abdominal pain, painless haematuria, difficulty in passing urine, lump in abdomen. Usually they are undiagnosed for long as other kidney takes over the function. Routine ultrasound abdomen will help in catching asymptomatic renal cell carcinoma.

multiple myelomas need a regular follow up and some times longer period of oral chemotherapy may be needed. he can ofcourse lead a normal life and its not necessarily progress but regular follow up is mandatory.

Colonic cancer is treated with multi modality approach with surgery at its core. In stage 3 diease still remains curable and hence it is advisable to seek opinion of an oncosurgeon to plan your treatment.
