Cotton swabs or cotton buds, are commonly used in our daily lifestyle. Many people use it for various purposes, such as make-up, bacterial culture, and most commonly for extracting wax and debris from the ear. Even though they are sometimes handy in our busy schedule, they usually cause much more harm than benefits. How are they misused? Cotton buds are toothpick like pieces made of wood, plastic, or rolled paper, which have cotton stuck at both ends with a roundish edge. It came into existence during the 1920s for a safe purpose of ear cleaning by Leo Gerstenzang, when he saw his wife cleaning their baby’s ear with a toothpick. And, til now they are used by the general population for ear cleaning, but these hardly remove the outer debris which is stuck near the outer edges. Impressing it inside the ear canal only does further damage, by forcing the inner wax further inside. Sometimes extensive force also causes damage to the ear drums. How does it cause the damage? Applying a tool like the cotton bud inside the ear with hands usually creates a force that impresses upon the eardrum, also accumulating the surrounding earwax to that area, resulting in impaction of the wax. The force applied most often, if not always, causes a damage to the ear drums, which might cause severe pain, also leading to leakage, causing improper balance, deafness, and certain similar abnormalities. Alternative measures Although we are worried about cleaning our ears, it doesn’t really require our notice, since our usual showers allow an adequate quantity of water to enter the ears and clean the accumulated debris automatically. The structure, in which our ear canal is designed, is usually naturally assisting in cleaning up the unusual wax around the ear. If there is an uncontrollable build up of earwax that is not cleaned off normally, you can always consult an ENT or any general physician and get it cleaned under medical surveillance, which is best advised. Doctors and medical practitioners all around the world have been trying to spread the message of preventing the use of cotton buds for ear cleaning. It is important that the message reach the greater part of the population. Spread it to your family, your closest friends, their friends, and as further, you can reach.

Hello, Thanks for your query on Lybrate "As" per your clinical history is concerned please follow like this - 1) Do a clinical exam by your treating Doctor[Neurologist] and do few investigations like [Fasting blood sugar, lipid profile, homocysteine,Carotid ultrasonography ,Arteriography of brain and MRI scan] to know exact cause of TIA. 2) Do a clinical exam of eye for retina status 3) Do take medications regularly and discuss with your doctor about permanent treatment like [carotid endarterectomy ] if any abnormality detected in test reports. Do follow few lifestyle modifications like this - 1) Don't smoke. Stopping smoking reduces your risk of a TIA or a stroke. 2) Limit cholesterol and fat. Cutting back on cholesterol and fat, especially saturated fat and trans fat, in your diet may reduce buildup of plaques in your arteries. 3) Try to eat plenty of fruits and vegetables. These foods contain nutrients such as potassium, folate and antioxidants, which may protect against a TIA or a stroke. 4) Limit sodium. If you have high blood pressure, avoiding salty foods and not adding salt to food may reduce your blood pressure. Avoiding salt may not prevent hypertension, but excess sodium may increase blood pressure in people who are sensitive to sodium. 5) Do exercise regularly. If you have high blood pressure, regular exercise is one of the few ways you can lower your blood pressure without drugs. 6) Limit alcohol intake. Drink alcohol in moderation, if at all. The recommended limit is no more than two a day for men. 7) Try to maintain a healthy weight. Being overweight contributes to other risk factors, such as high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease and diabetes. Losing weight with diet and exercise may lower your blood pressure and improve your cholesterol levels. 8) Don't use illicit drugs like cocaine 9) Try to control diabetes. You can manage diabetes and high blood pressure with diet, exercise, weight control and, when necessary, medication. Hope that helps.

I get frequent cold, runny nose and sneezing. Usually starts in the morning and lasts till noon. If I take a cetrizine it gets controlled in an hour or two. At local clinic doctor prescribed a stronger dose of levocetirizine for a week, after this medication cold got controlled for a week and then it re started to appear in regular frequency. This is happening since almost an year. I tried strict diet control, nose mask, home remedies, taking steam bath, but they dint help in long term. Please suggest.

Its Allergic Rhinitis. No simple cure for it. Avoidance of allergen, change of geographic locations and some times age leads to remission. Rarely Immunotherapy is recommended.

Hi lybrate-user viral fever and dizziness may cause a problem called vestibular neuritis where the nerve responsible for balance may be affected by the virus. If you still feel dizziness you need to urgently do the tests mentioned below. Vestibular neuritis needs urgent treatment. Vertigo is a medical term which describes a sense if rotation even while stationary. It can often be confused with lightheadedness, generalised weakness, dizziness. Vertigo may be caused by problems in your peripheral (Ear &balance mechanism inside ear known as the vestibular system) or central nervous system.  A complete checkup is required to isolate the cause. Peripheral vestibular  system causing vertigo symptoms may need initial medications to stabilise followed by Vestibular Rehabilitation  exercises. A good quality  of life can be achieved if properly managed. * Pure tone audiometry  and tympanometry  can detect any problem in the ear nerves and tympanic membrane pressure (both of which can be abnormal in case of ear diseases) An Xray of the Cervical Spine (AP /Lat/Lat-oblique to check for cervical spondylitis CT brain and a complete  haemogram  are some of the baseline tests needed for a good evaluation  of vertigo. Hope this helps
