I get frequent back pains as I have to sit and code daily. What should I do to reduce such pains?

I get frequent back pains as I have to sit and code daily. What should I do to reduce such pains?
Hello. Maintain a right standing and sitting posture, keep your back always straight, avoid carrying weight on back. Hold or carry weight divided equally in both the hands or shoulders (to avoid over straining on one particular hand or shoulder). Lie down on bed on your back without pillow. Exercise: Practice Shavasana or Corpse Pose as it looks like a dead body. If practiced correctly and with full efforts, can relax every body part, relaxing not only the body but also the mind: Spread the legs one to two feet apart, the toes are turned outwards, the heels facing each other, a comfortable distance apart. Bring the arms a little away from the body, palms turned upward. Relax the neck and allow it to turn to the side if it is more comfortable. Close the eyes and focus the attention on the body, breathing normally.

Tips For After Injury

MSc in Orhopedic Physiotherapy (UK), BPTh/BPT
Physiotherapist, Bangalore

Tips for after injury

If you have sustained a soft tissue injury, we recommend you use the rice method – rest, ice, compression and elevation to aid your recovery:

  • Rest is a key component to the body’s healing process, without it the injured area could become inflamed, more painful, or you could risk further injury
  • Ice reduces inflammation and pain. To protect your skin we recommend that the ice be placed within a towel before wrapping around the injured area
  • Compression helps reduce swelling and pain
  • Elevation also helps reduce swelling by reducing blood flow to the affected area.

I am suffering from severe back pain. What should I do?

Doctor Of Physical Therapy (DPT), Bachelor of Physical Therapy
Physiotherapist,
I am suffering from severe back pain. What should I do?
Back ache can be due to several reasons. It can be muscular, related to disc degeneration or prolapse, joint irritation or nerve pinching. Most common is muscle pain due to tight and weak back and abdominal muscles. Keep a positive attitude, focus more on keeping good posture especially when sitting for long hours, use lumbar support. Take frequent breaks and stretch in between. Try changing sleeping habits. Try hot or cold therapy as tolerated. Wish you speedy recovery.

Sir I experience chronic pain, heaviness and discomfort in my back head while studying for many hours. Please diagnose and prescribe me the right remedy for it ? Thanks.

BPTh/BPT
Physiotherapist, Hyderabad
As you said yourself that you are studying for many hours it is the most possible reason for it. The aggravating factors could be bad posture, bending position for long hours without break is detrimental to spinal health. Please use ergonomics for proper posture and position of your books while reading or writing to relive your pain. Follow neck exercises daily and heat therapy for the pain at trigger points. Bending for long duration should be avoided. Rotation of the head in all directions possible should be done at frequent intervals. Keep yourself hydrated with atleast 3litres of water every day this helps in the long run and relieves tension off your muscles.

I have Knee Osteoarthritis and have been doing physiotherapy exercises and am also on pain relief medication when I get pain. I walk daily about a kilometer in about 16- 18 minutes in both morning and evening. I have been advised to undergo for total knee replacement surgery which I am prolonging by physiotherapy and pain relief medication since last two years. I was, diagnosed of OA about six years earlier. I would like to know if there is a cure for OA without operation. My age is 73, male with 70 kg weight and 5 ft 8" height. As per my frame I should weigh about 65- 70 kg. Apart form OA I do not have any disease like High BP or Diabetes etc. I am assuming that the advice is free and non binding to me.
