I am 26, Please let me know, what are the best daily ways to improve my memory and concentration.

Reparenting Technique, BA, BEd
Psychologist, Bangalore
Without concentration the mind goes here, there and everywhere, jumping like a monkey from branch to branch, idea to idea. When there is a natural concentration, we can control our mind and there is peace. This one-pointed concentration on a thought, holding it for as long as we like, gradually collects strength in the mind and in the self. A strong mind is a mind that is peaceful, stable, satisfied and can remain in the deeper meaning of a thought. There is no waste caused by over-thinking, or the high speed of thought: These are the two greatest diseases of the mind these days, which is why there is so much stress and mental breakdown. Stress can foil concentration and learning ability. Although concentration is different to memory, they can affect each other. Concentration precedes memory. If you are under stress your concentration will go for a toss, then naturally memory will be totally foiled. So meet with a counselor to take care of the stress and your memory will happily return. You can follow these simple rules in the meantime: Have a good night’s sleep, have a good breakfast of more proteins, meditate often, remain free of stress, eat a lot of fiber, nuts, avocado, exercise regularly, eat dark chocolate, do Yoga meditation exercises, etc. You need to check out if you are stronger visual or auditory. The visual is a better mode than the auditory. However, if you combine the two modes, you will get the best concentration. Short-term memory is a faculty of the left brain, and long-term memory is a feature of the right brain. When people are stressed, they tend to favor the right brain and abandon the left brain, where short-term memory resides. So, it is really very simple: deal with the stress and activate left brain functions. Here are a few suggestions to activate left brain function: shut your left nostril and breathe, move your eyes from right to left and vice versa for at least half a minute at a time, and do callisthenic exercises with some form of counting, regularly. There is a new exercise called Super Brain Yoga, which is done by holding the right earlobe with your left thumb and index finger, and the left earlobe with your right hand’s thumb and index finger. In this position you must squat down and rise up and do this for five minutes every day. If your home life is full of distractions and stress, it is likely to affect your memory, adversely. In that case, I suggest that the family goes for counseling. The following foods do help too: Blueberries, walnuts, turmeric, Spinach, tomatoes, broccoli, acorn squash, green tea, oily fish, boiled egg, turkey, apples, oatmeal, leafy greens, lentils, pumpkin seeds, avocado, cinnamon, thyme, sunflower seeds, and red wine. Now take you pick!

I am not remember any thing after 3 hours. Whet I thought that time I have facing many types of problem.

Reparenting Technique, BA, BEd
Psychologist, Bangalore
Daily exercise of at least half an hour is a must. Even if you go to a gym, ask for aerobic and/or callisthenic exercises with whatever else you are doing. A healthy body harbors a healthy mind. With regard to memory, it is very important that your brain and body is ideally rested to be able to recall whatever is required, rather comfortably. Puzzles pose problems to the brain that help it to use new pathways and neurons, which give the brain considerable exercise. It taxes the left brain to use logic to solve the myriad possibilities which other activities do not stimulate. Crosswords are excellent for vocabulary learning and use. Jigsaws and Rubik cube stimulate different permutations to finally settle on the most likely one. Picture completion and anagrams help approach problem solving from several angles. Do Sudoku, and memory co-relation activities and skills. Have a good night’s sleep, have a good breakfast of more proteins, meditate often, remain free of stress, eat a lot of fiber (whole grains, fruits and vegetables), nuts, avocado, eat dark chocolate, consume less of fat and use olive oil instead, do Yoga meditation exercises, etc. You need to check out if you are stronger visual or auditory. The visual is a better mode than the auditory. However, if you combine the two modes, you will get the best concentration. Have a special place of learning, which should be well lit, with soft painted walls, well-ventilated, with no distractions. When you get bored, study by writing. If you repeat learning at least five to seven times, you will apparently remember for a longer time. Sit comfortably but do not slouch. The reading material should be of a fairly large print. Study at small intervals of about 40 minutes and then take a break or change the subject. Short-term memory is a faculty of the left brain, and long-term memory is a feature of the right brain. When people are stressed, they tend to favor the right brain and abandon the left brain, where short-term memory resides. So, it is really very simple: deal with the stress and activate left brain functions. Read this : How to deal with angry , over-reacting and hateful thoughts? Angry, hateful thoughts are like poison – literally poison. They not only pollute our minds, such thoughts physically release very harmful substances into our body. Anger and hatred toward another person is like trying to hurt the offender by ourselves drinking poison. That doesn’t mean the other person should not be challenged or stopped, BUT that should be done with love. In other words because we LOVE that jiva (part and parcel of the Lord) we don’t want them to suffer so we try to correct their activity so they will not suffer in the future for what they are doing. So my humble advice is if you find someone being dishonest try to correct them with love. If you can’t do that, at least take a breath and think before you speak. Words are like arrows. Once released they cannot be retracted. - Courtesy of HG Ramananda Prabhu's portal

Hi sir/mam myself bharath n im 27yrs old. From past 5 yrs im smoking cigarettes in an average 5sticks a day. And now I decided quit this. And I tried 2 times to quit that but I can't.. During that time I felt lazy, weak and anger. So I need your help to quit. Is there any procedure to quit or any medicine.. please refer me.

Reparenting Technique, BA, BEd
Psychologist, Bangalore
Nicotine gums are just an aid and need not be mandatorily used. You may use nicotine patches if you want any help to curb the physical urge since nicotine is the dependency causing substance in tobacco smoke. When quitting, you must take one day at a time. If you look too far ahead you will get discouraged and will give up. If you sit and count the number of days you have given up, that will also focus too much on achievement. You must focus on the here and now, on that day to be precise. After all quitting is not that easy due to many factors. So even if you fail one day, you must try and try again. Very few people succeed in their first attempt. Your persistence will eventually pay off. The urge to discontinue is hampered by many factors but the worst of them is the conditioning. In fact these conditions can exist all through the day unlike other addictions. But your desire to want to stop is the most important factor. It is important to find out about the ill-effects of smoking to have a reason that alarms you about continuing in the habit. The information is really scary but true and you must remind yourself about this every day. The nicotine in tobacco smoke stimulates the heart beat to raise the blood pressure in no time at all. So you must avoid it like the plague: it is just very bad medicine for you. In fact it is highly toxic too. You will need to stop smoking or consuming any tobacco related items with immediate effect. You should start vigorous exercises, gradually increasing it over a period of time. Do deep breathing exercises every time you feel like smoking (try Yoga), and replace the oral urge with some healthy food substitute to satiate the need. You may also take hard candy or chewing gum. If the urge is too strong, then use nicotine gums and nicotine patches, for a little while until the smoking drive reduces, substantially. You may also join Smokers Anonymous in your city where the support is really extraordinary for like-minded people who are also in the same situation. Keep yourself occupied or engaged with interesting activities during the times when it is most tempting. Keep the company of non-smokers for some time i.e. at least for the first 21 days. Above all announce it to everyone that you have quit smoking. Here’s a piece of very good advice: even if you accidentally/willfully take a cigarette, it is not the end of the world – you can start the cessation all over again. You must persevere with the best support until you defeat this addiction. Counseling is very useful in the initial stages and when temptations are at their highest.

It is closely related to the fear of public speaking. We tend to judge ourselves rather negatively and think that the other people are also judging us similarly. This is also linked with social anxiety where the people around you are likely to reject you: this is not true as you may know but you will believe it and become quite disturbed. Do you know why you do not trust people? Have you had a bad experience? If not, you will still need to meet people and live with them. The ultimate test of a personality is in the social context. The greater test is when we meet with the opposite sex. And the final test is when we have to bed and board with a member of the opposite sex in marriage. If you wait for that time to resolve it, it might be too late and traumatizing. Even if you are afraid of people, face your fear and see what happens. They are certainly not going to kill you. So what is the worst that can happen? Really nothing but it will feel great to have friends and lots of companions in life. We are after all social animals, gregarious by nature and need each other. So don’t handicap yourself on this front. Attend a personality development class, personal grooming class, public speaking class, and conversation classes. It will help to do a lot of this with a close friend, if you have one. If not, find one. We are into relationships all the time. It is near impossible to live without people. All research has shown that living with someone gives us good health and long life too. Do build a good constitution mentally, emotionally and physically to combat stress. Eat healthily, sleep well, and exercise regularly. Talk about your emotions regularly to a good friend every day. Learn stress management techniques. Do Yoga and meditation. Pray every day to God to give you the strength, and offer your work as a prayer to Him – you will give your best and you will feel so satisfied when you do it well. You must also talk to your superior that the workload is getting beyond your means and that you need more personnel to support you.

Dear, You must be able to understand Concentration, attention span, recollection and distraction. If you are able to watch a movie for two hours continuously, if you are able to play a game for an hour, then you do not have any concentration problems. You can't be attentive towards your studies because you are not interested in it. You are able to watch movie and play game because you are interested in it. Human cannot be attentive towards anything for more than 10 minutes. Then you should study in such a way that your attention is continued and make the subjects are interesting to you. Effective learning techniques should help you. Recollection depends on anxiety, stress and other physical and circumstantial factors. Distractions while studying are plentiful. You should be able to overcome distractions or avoid distractions. Please understand the above. Change your study style and attitude accordingly. Please post a private question to me and I will help you with "effective learning" techniques. Take care.

My boyfriend for 2.5 years, who is also my childhood friend, is my 3rd boyfriend and this time friendship being the base, we have that'thing' My problem is that we are mostly in a casual mood, teasing each other (which most often turns out to be a debate and then heats up). I would always prefer having a'hot' talk instead of a'heated' on. We are happy when we are together but this long distance relationship leads us to quarrel ultimately usually. We have great sex but it's only upto the time we are together. Yes, we don't talk about'those' things like sexting and talking dirty and all, though I have a serious desire to go for it. I know it will add on to our relationship and even talked to him very direct many times. I even started once or twice saying something hot but cutely because he always turns me down. He thinks talking about it will distract both of us in our goals and always has a big no-no to it. I made a reference as to if it doesn't make a difference while having sex then why shall he be thinking about it now. I am very devastated by trying and because of his irritatedness on my sexual fantasies (which he set aside all the time). I don't want to push him to it, I just want to experience talking things we never did with him. I usually tell him my fantasies but I want to know his too. Though he doesn't respond to my requests I would still want to go further in this fantasising part of love. Now, I seriously seek suggestions as to what ingredient to pit next.

Hello lybrate-user, you report you and your current boyfriend are sexually involved with each other, but, he refuses to talk about your sexual fantasies over the phone/ while he is away from you. He seems to believe such conversations will distract you both from your goals. In such a case it would be useful to self-evaluate what your goals are and also talk with your partner what his gaols are. This will help you both map your future and reduce some anxiety. It will also give you more clarity on why he is so reluctant to indulge your fantasies. This should help you move further. I hope this helps you. Good luck.

And he always touch my breast if he wants sex. Which irritates me alot. He just expecting sex without love. I mean with out speaking to me he directly goes to sex. Dear lybrate-user You have to bring the courage to tell him your mind, anger and frustration. But before this; spend a lot of time I making yourself beautiful and healthy. This can all be done at home. Start exercising, eat the right kinds of food, loose about 15 kgs in 4 to 6 months. At the same time, develop a hobby; singing, painting, needlework, pottery, making jams, pickles etc etc. Make sure you spend atleast 2 to 3 hours on these. Expecially physical exercise. This will develop your personality and beauty; exercise will make your physical form improve. When you start feeling beautiful from inside, your anger will reduce, self worth will increase and your husband will want to spend quality time with you. At such a time you both can explore foreplay before sex that will be satisfying to both of you and renew your family peace. Regards.
