I am diabetic from last 10 years I am on gulconorm g plus 3 in morning and metafort 500 in night. Now my sugar pp is 175 and fasting 130. My triglycerides are 220 and hdl is 34. What is the good treatment for me. Any any sideeffect of these medicine. I am 45 years male.

DNB (ENT), MBBS
ENT Specialist, Bangalore
Hi The medications seem to be fine and they are not known to have many severe side effects. I would suggest to include lifestyle changes such as dietary control and some physical exercise in addition to these medications for better control of sugars. Diabetes rarely comes under control by taking medications alone.

I am 24 years old. I would like to know the reasons diabetics. And also diet for diabetic patients.

MBBS, CCEBDM, Diploma in Diabetology

I am 24 years old. I would like to know the reasons diabetics. And also diet for diabetic patients.
Mr. Lybrate-user, the reasons why diabetes develops are multiple. In t1 diabetes there a complete loss of insulin secreting beta cells, due to production of antibodies. T1 is an auto immune disease. T2 is occuring either due to lack of insulin or increase resistance to its action. It is a familial disease, spreads in families. Other contributing factors are over weight or obesity, inactivity, junk foods, aerated sweetened drinks. Diet for a person with diabetes has to be very specifically designed. However, certain precautions to be taken with regard to diet are: avoid sweets, deep fried foods, junk foods, pastries and other bakery items, sweetened aerated drinks and high fat milk products. Consume more of green leafy vegetables and salads, permitted fruits about a 100 g a day. Also take high fiber containing foods like whole grain products. Take total calories based on your ideal body weight, extent of exercise and blood sugar levels. Thanks for the question.

Hye thanks for the query. Its good that you are doing so well. Right now what you need is a detailed plan with a carbohydrate breakup suited to your needs your lifestyle present diet etc. Remember you need to manage a certain amount of carbs for the marathon as well as consider your sugar uptake. Too much cholesterol in the blood can lead to cardiovascular disease. What you eat has a direct impact on your cholesterol level. In fact, a diet rich in fiber and other cholesterol-lowering foods may help lower cholesterol as much as statin medication for some people. Working with a registered dietitian and doctor is the key to develop and maintain a successful health program to manage it. I will inform you on how to make diet, lifestyle changes, make you understand instructions for taking medication because it won't work if you don't take it as directed. Consult privately for a holistic dietary therapy to solve your problems.

lybrate-user, Your TSH value has come to normal because of the treatment with thyroxine 25 mcg, tablet being taken. If it is stopped TSH level will again go up and from earlier sub-clinical situation it may go on to become a definite hypothyroidism. Hence, treatment has to be continued. Actually on treatment TSH should be maintained between 3 to 4 mU/L. Thanks.

How should I change my diet to reduce high uric acid level in blood without taking medicine.

MBBS, M.MED, DFM, FID, CCEBDM, ACMDC, CCMTD

How should I change my diet to reduce high uric acid level in blood without taking medicine.
Lower fat intake as excess fat reduces normal excretion of uric acid Liberal fluid intake to keep the urine dilute Restriction or elimination of alcohol What to avoid Shell fishes, red meat, mince meat, meat extracts, organ meats, fishes (sardine, roe, makeral). Whole pulses (masur, rajmah, chana, chole, etc.). Other dals are allowed Vegetables and fruits - green peas, spinach, french beans, brinjal, cauliflower, mushroom, chickoo, custard apple Diet rules Use less salt while cooking. Avoid adding salt while cooking rice or in chapatti dough Use adjuncts like tomato, vinegar, cocum, amchur, lime juice, curd, pepper powder to make the food cooked with less salt palatable Remove the salt shaker from the table Avoid salted nuts/ biscuits, papads, pickles, chutneys Avoid excess consumption of processed and preserved foods; eg. Bakery products Caution - Do not overdo on salt substitutes as that might cause an electrolyte imbalance Recommended foods Fresh cherries, strawberries, blueberries and other red-blue berries Bananas Celery Tomatoes Vegetables including cabbage and parsley Foods high in bromelain (pineapple) Foods high in vitamin C (red cabbage, red bell peppers, tangerines, mandarins, oranges, potatoes) Low-fat dairy products Complex carbohydrates (breads, cereals) Chocolate, cocoa Coffee, tea Although Purines (organic compounds, which create uric acid breakdown in the body) are found in vegetable sources, they don't cause the same amount of uric acid buildup in the body that meat sources do. In fact, fresh fruits and vegetables reduce acid levels in the body and it is often advised to avoid red meats, organ meats and highly processed foods. Fresh fruits and vegetables are encouraged so the patient can increase alkalinity in the blood. Therefore, rather than attempting to find foods that are free of purines and uric acid, it's important to know how to increase the body's alkalinity, which naturally reduces the body's acidity. Fresh, non-processed foods, such as fruits and vegetables, are the way to go.

Mr. lybrate-user, Looking at your weight and height, it is clear that you have grade 1 obesity with a BMI of 31.42 kg/M2. This itself can cause high blood glucose level. Plus the levels mentioned are high, ideally fasting should be around 100 mg, PP 150 to 160 mg & HbA1c%<6.8. So there is a need to bring down the glucose levels. Fenugreek seeds are good, the contain fibers and are helpful in controlling glucose levels. Thanks.

I want to know if I have diabetes and suddenly sugar level lowers war should I do in dat case.
Mr. Lybrate-user, if a person has diabetes and he is on treatment, then sometimes there is a possibility of developing hypoglycemia (low blood glucose). Then he or she should take glucotabs, which provide rapidly absorbed glucose. If not then either sugar, candy or gur or some sweet can be taken. Thanks.
