Try using alternate hot and cold paxks for 15 minutes every hour to relax muscle spasm. Then do gentle back stretching exercises and focus on changing posture sleeping habits.

Core Strengthening Exercise- Straight Leg Raised With Toes Turned Outward, repeat 10 times, twice a day. Hams Stretching- lie straight, take the leg up, pull the feet towards yourself, with a elastic tube or normal belt. repeat 10 times, twice a day. Quadriceps Exercises- Lie straight, make a towel role and put it under the knee, press the knee against the role, hold it for 20 secs. Repeat 20 times twice a day. This will help relieve some pain.

Hello there are many reasons for this type of pain- 1. Overuse of muscle, 2. Deficiency of vitamin d3 or calcium, or lack of water in the body, 3. Postural stress, 4. Muscle strain, etc. I can help you by teaching correct postural habits and ergonomics, do consult me privately. Till then follow these advises:- 1. Take calcium supplements and calcium rich diet like milk, paneer, buttermilk, cheese etc and sun bath daily to prevent further damage to your joints. 2. Avoid heavy lifting. 3. Avoid squatting and weight bearing activities. 4. Use western toilet. 5. Wear shock absorbing, good quality of shoes while walking. 6. Keep roll of a towel under your knees while sleeping. 7. Perform some gentle exercises and stretching of your all joints before getting out of your bed. 8. Walk straight with shoulder protracted. 9. Perform deep breathing exercises or yoga for proper functioning of lungs. 10. Perform calf pumping exercises, which i'll explain you in the next session. Thanks.

If you have fever then its quite normal to have back pain. But if their is no fever then the pain could be due excessive coughing. If there is a slipped disc then coughing can increase the pain.

Dear Doctor, I am male aged 43 years vegetarian working in the Central Government office in New Delhi Office having sedentary life style. My weight is 82 kg and height is 5'10" I am having problem in the both knees. The problem is I am getting acute pain in my both legs. I am unable sit, mend my legs and having acute pain in the knee. Even when I sleep also I am getting the pain. CGHS has prescribed as follows: 1) Hot pack where the pain is 2) physiotherapy 3) walking 4) medicines 5) braces on both legs 6) medicines. Sir, i've read your history and after understanding your issue the treatment offered is very symptomatic. For better results you need a little more work up. This includes x ray of your knees which will help us clarify if there are any arthritic changes. Weight reduction and vitamin d correction will also help you. Regards.

How Hip Arthritis Affects The Hip Joint?

If you are experiencing joint stiffness in your hip along with pain and tenderness, you could be suffering from hip arthritis or osteoarthritis. Osteoarthritis accounts for being the most common form of arthritis. It is referred to as degenerative joint disease and old-age arthritis and usually, occurs because of age-related issues. The condition occurs when injury and inflammation of a joint lead to the breakdown of the cartilage tissue, causing pain, swelling, and deformity.

How hip arthritis affects the hip joint?
People who are affected by osteoarthritis of the hip may have difficulty in walking properly. Diagnosis in the early stage is difficult as pain may occur in various locations such as the thigh, groin, knee or buttocks.

The underlying causes
The factors responsible for osteoarthritis include increasing age, joint injury and excess body weight. Some other factors may also be responsible. They are as follows:

  1. When the joints have formed improperly.
  2. In case of inherited defects in the cartilage.
  3. When a person puts excess stress on the hip joint because of being overweight or due to certain activities and motions.

How it can be detected?
The different symptoms of hip arthritis or osteoarthritis are as follows:

  1. Joint stiffness, especially after waking up in the morning.
  2. Joint stiffness after sitting for a long period.
  3. Swelling, pain, and tenderness in the hip joint.
  4. A crunching feeling or sound of bones rubbing against one another.
  5. The inability to move the hip for carrying out daily activities.

Treatment
The aim of osteoarthritis treatment is to improve the patient’s ability to move about so that his regular life is less affected. The function of the hip and pain management are other targets of treatment for this condition. The different treatment plans are as follows:

  1. Proper joint care and rest
  2. Using a cane while walking for taking weight off your hip
  3. Losing excessive weight
  4. Non-drug pain relief measures for controlling pain
  5. Regular exercise
  6. Several medicines, including NSAIDS and other prescribed pain medication
  7. Surgery
  8. Alternative therapies

Hip replacement surgery
This is a surgical procedure used for osteoarthritis treatment when all other treatment plans fail. The damaged ball of the hip joint is replaced with a metal ball in this surgical procedure. The hip socket is resurfaced by using a plastic liner and metal shell. Apart from the mentioned treatment procedures, hip resurfacing is another surgical option for osteoarthritis treatment, which helps in giving relief when a hip replacement surgery is delayed. In this procedure, the affected hip joint surfaces are surgically removed and are replaced with metal. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult an Orthopedist.

Nowadays leg pain is a very common complaint in young adults because of there daytoday activities. It can be due to various reasons any injury, muscle strain eg-sudden twist, overuse of muscle or due to deficiency of vit b12, calcium or uric acid. Many of the problem occurs for which we are not aware. After looking at your pain I would recommend you to go for investigations like vit d, b12 etc which is very common problem these days. In the meantime please take care of following things along with some home treatment to give you relief from your pain. Precautions: 1. Avoid prolong standing. 2. Avoid standing in the one position for a long time. 3. Get enough vit d from sun as vit d keep bones strong including spine, 4. Drink plenty of water to enhance your muscle strengthen. 5. While sleeping try to elevate your leg inorder to maintain blood circulation. 6. When sitting on chair in office or work place try to use small stool under your leg to avoid leg hanging as gravity applies direct pressure due to which it creates a tension in muscles and your legs start paining. Physio care: I would recommend you for some home treatment which will give you some percent of pain relief. Take rest- it doesn't mean a complete bed rest. Do not over exert your body. Work take rest and then work so that you do not feel tired and started paining. Treatment- 1. Make use of hot packs and ice packs alternately. Apply with the ratio of 3: 2 which means 3 min ice then 2 min heat. Ice has very good results in relieving pain than heat so combination of both gives you complete relax. As ice reduces pain and heat stimulates blood flow around the affected area. Entire session should be for 15-20 minutes twice a day. 2. Once done with the combination therapy ask someone to massage your painful area using fingers or thumb. Massage using kneading technique. Slightly press the thumb and start rotating as it helps to induce relaxation, relieve pain, and reduce levels of stress chemicals, such as cortisol and noradrenaline. It will give you pain relief for time being. 3. After massage apply any pain relieving ointment eg - volini or oraflame gel etc. Make sure not to do massage with the gel, it should not penetrate the body. Just a topical application of gel should be done. 4. Now start some stretching and strengthening exercises like hamstring sets, quadriceps sets, knee bending, calf stretching, heel toe raising, ankle dorsiflexion/plantarflexion stretch. Start with these exercises and then progress. While performing exercises if severe pain occurs then would recommend you to stop doing exercise. Massage or slightly rub the painful area and consult your near by physio to diagnose the actual cause of the pain as he/she can guide you proper exercise plan which will be beneficial for you after checking grade of your leg pain. I am suffering with a severe back ache for the past two months. Kindly help me with a diagnosis.
Hi lybrate-user, reason for back pain can be different but mainly it is differentiated into discogenic (due to disc herniation of different types such as bulge, protrusion, extrusion & sequestration) & non discogenic (arising from other structures of lumbar spine such as facet joints, paraspinal/quadratus/ piriformis muscles spasm, vertebral body itself in case of compression fracture, sacroiliac joints etc). It is important to show to interventional pain specialist or orthopedician dealing with spine (not every orthopedician goes into spine details) for proper diagnosis & according to diagnosis treatment will vary from conservative management with physiotherapy to epidural nerve block to minimally invasive spine interventions such as disc nucleoplasty or even surgery in some cases, such as endoscopic discectomy or open spine surgery to cure it permanently. My advise will be to get proper diagnosis of backache & treatement further to cure it. Hope it helps.

Hi thanks for your query and welcome to lybrate. I am Dr. Akshay from fortis hospital, new delhi. You have to first of all differentiate between pain due to a renal colic and lower back region. You pain due to a renal stone has to be managed as per urologist. As far as pain in the lower back region is concerned, there are many causes of pain in lower back region. It can be due to faulty posture, related to weak muscles, issues with intervertebral disc, narrowing of spinal canal, any bony instability besides many other, so accurate diagnosis is the key to proper management of the condition. You will have to elaborate your problem as to a detailed discussion of your back pain which means duration of pain and mode of onset. I would also like to ask you if it is associated with any leg pain or any other neurological symptoms like numbness, paraesthesias (electrical shock like abnormal sensations) or any weakness in limbs. Please also tell me about any associated symptoms like fever, weight loss etc. What medications you generally take and what has been your treatment history till now for existing problem. Hi, There is no mention of the nature or cause of your pain. As it is just 2-3 days old, I assume it may be because of any small injury. Maybe because you hold your baby for a long time. The first step in treatment for any injury is to give rest. You can give support to the joint by a bandage. Pain oils like Murivenna or Karpuradi thaila can be used for applying over the wrist. Mix camphor in hot cocunut oil, apply the warm oil on wrist twice a day. It would give relief to your pain. Do consult a doctor if the pain persists. Take care, be happy.

I broke my bone 6 weeks ago and had a cast. It was removed yesterday but the bone doesn't look straight on my xray. My doctor said that it is fine like that since now it's connected. Is this really true or it will cause me more problems in the future.

well you haven't mentioned which fracture you had!! , if doctor is saying it is unite,than that bone must be fine. and with time bone and limb will gain its strength. do some strengthening exercises for better improvement.

I fell off the stairs, broke a stool while sitting on it and broke a chair sitting on it in a span of 45 days. Apply hot fomentation twice daily. Avoid bending in front. Postural correction- sit tall, walk tall. Extension exercises x 15 times x twice daily. Bhujang asana. Core strengthening exercises. Back stretching. Do the cat/cow stretch.
