I want to know that my periods have come always late around 35 days, I have hypothyroidism also. But my tsh level is ...
there are many cause for irregular menses..do usg for pelvis, and tsh level is going down ..A number of conditions, including Graves' disease, toxic adenoma, Plummer's disease (toxic multinodular goiter) and thyroiditis, can cause hyperthyroidism. Your thyroid is a butterfly-shaped gland situated at the base of your neck, just below your Adam's apple. Although it weighs less than an ounce, the thyroid gland has an enormous impact on your health. Every aspect of your metabolism is regulated by thyroid hormones. Your thyroid gland produces two main hormones, thyroxine (T-4) and triiodothyronine (T-3), that influence every cell in your body. They maintain the rate at which your body uses fats and carbohydrates, help control your body temperature, influence your heart rate, and help regulate the production of protein. Your thyroid also produces calcitonin, a hormone that helps regulate the amount of calcium in your blood. How it all works The rate at which T-4 and T-3 are released is controlled by your pituitary gland and your hypothalamus — an area at the base of your brain that acts as a thermostat for your whole system. Here's how the process works: The hypothalamus signals your pituitary gland to make a hormone called thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH). Your pituitary gland then releases TSH — the amount depends on how much T-4 and T-3 are in your blood. If you don't have enough T-4 and T-3 in your blood, your TSH will rise; if you have too much, your TSH level will fall. Finally, your thyroid gland regulates its production of hormones based on the amount of TSH it receives. If the thyroid gland is diseased and is releasing too much thyroid hormone on its own, the TSH blood level will remain below normal; if the diseased thyroid gland cannot make enough thyroid hormone, the TSH blood level will remain high. Reasons for too much thyroxine (T-4) Normally, your thyroid releases the right amount of hormones, but sometimes it produces too much T-4. This may occur for a number of reasons, including: Graves' disease. Graves' disease, an autoimmune disorder in which antibodies produced by your immune system stimulate your thyroid to produce too much T-4, is the most common cause of hyperthyroidism. Normally, your immune system uses antibodies to help protect against viruses, bacteria and other foreign substances that invade your body. In Graves' disease, antibodies mistakenly attack your thyroid and occasionally attack the tissue behind your eyes (Graves' ophthalmopathy) and the skin, often in your lower legs over the shins (Graves' dermopathy). Scientists aren't sure exactly what causes Graves' disease, although several factors — including a genetic predisposition — are likely involved. Hyperfunctioning thyroid nodules (toxic adenoma, toxic multinodular goiter, Plummer's disease). This form of hyperthyroidism occurs when one or more adenomas of your thyroid produce too much T-4. An adenoma is a part of the gland that has walled itself off from the rest of the gland, forming noncancerous (benign) lumps that may cause an enlargement of the thyroid. Not all adenomas produce excess T-4, and doctors aren't sure what causes some to begin producing too much hormone. Thyroiditis. Sometimes your thyroid gland can become inflamed for unknown reasons. The inflammation can cause excess thyroid hormone stored in the gland to leak into your bloodstream. One rare type of thyroiditis, known as subacute thyroiditis, causes pain in the thyroid gland. Other types are painless and may sometimes occur after pregnancy (postpartum thyroiditis).

My wife is feeling pain in her Vagina because of sex for one week. How to prevent with this. She's has already taken the medicine for that.

DGO, MBBS
Gynaecologist, Bangalore
Pain in vagina during intercourse may due to few common reasons like lack of lubrication, infection, unbroken hymen, endometriosis. So it is important to get an internal checkup done to come to a proper diagnosis. If its only due to lack of lubrication she can use lubic jelly before contact, but do not miss to contact doctor for a thorough check up.

lybrate-user, Thanks for the query. After delivery in many cases Thyroid function does return to normal, which can be identifies by checking TSH level. (<4.5 mU/L). In that case there is no need to continue the medication. However, in many cases clinical hypothyroidism may persist, in such cases dosage of Thyroxine has to be lowered by 12.5 to 25 mcg per day depending upon the TSH levels. There are no household remedies for treating hypothyroidism. For prevention only remedy is to use iodinated salt. Plus avoid soy beans and soy containing products. Consume more of green leafy vegetables, salads and fruits. Always use whole grain flour for roti and chapati. Never use maida, bakery items and pastries. If you have any doubts please do come back. Thanks.

Mother, Wife Sister - Common Health Mistakes Most Women Make!

Mother, Wife Sister - Common Health Mistakes Most Women Make!
Common Health Mistakes Women Make

Women handle a lot, from work to family and society to their own health. They also try to eat better foods, lead a healthy lifestyle and exercise regularly as well. But despite trying their best, most women tend to make a few mistakes when it comes to their health. These mistakes are small and not too noticeable, but they can be quite harmful in the long run.

Make them aware about these common health mistakes now!

1. Not Drinking enough water: Ask any woman and she will probably know that she must drink 7-8 glasses of water every day. But most women don’t actually follow the rule and commit this sinful mistake. Drinking less water will make you dehydrated and leave you feeling weak. At the same time, it can make them prone to infections, including UTI and may make them cranky. Women must incorporate water-rich foods in their daily diet and ensure drinking more water.

2. Skipping Meals: Sometimes, women are just too busy to eat a meal and think that can cover up with a bigger lunch or bigger dinner later. Skipping meals can slow down body’s metabolism and cause overeating. This in turn can result in weight-gain, not to forget a variety of serious diseases. Eating more whole foods, beans, seeds, fruits and vegetables revs up metabolism.

3. Not eating enough protein: A lot of women are overweight these days because they make the common mistake of skipping protein. In their attempt to stay slimmer or lose weight, they avoid eating vegetarian or non-vegetarian sources of protein, which can reduce muscle mass and make one overweight. Plus, when women don’t eat protein, they tend to gorge on carbohydrates, which can increase their blood sugar spike and result in more hunger throughout the day.

4. Not getting enough sleep: Majority of women in the country fail to get enough sleep. Handling a variety of responsibilities and roles may result in getting interrupted and lesser sleep, which can cause premature ageing. It is recommended that adults, including men should get a minimum of 7 hours of sleep every single day.

5. Not enough calcium: Not having enough calcium in your diet may lead to osteoporosis. Women must not only avoid skipping milk products and foods that are otherwise rich in calcium, but also get enough calcium through supplements once they cross 35 years of age.

Copper t inserted after abortion its been 8 years. How can I know whether it is there or not.

Copper t inserted after abortion its been 8 years. How can I know whether it is there or not.
Get an ultrasound done to see the location of Copper T, also you should not have kept it for that long, as it's expiry happens maximum after 5 yrs, and all this while you have kept a foreign body inside you, which has been more of a physical barrier for avoiding pregnancy.

As you r already suffering from pcod, menses can get delayed even with slight change in hormones. You have not mentioned your last menses date. If it is crossed the date by 7 days then urine test to be done and if negative keep repeating every week till you get menses. Myo-inisitol and duphaston have already proven by research to be not effective for treatment of pcod.

Dear user. I can understand. If you have irregular period or are not sure when you ovulated, you can do a URINE HOME PREGNANCY TEST 14 days after you last had unprotected sex. However for accuracy of result, it is recommended to do the test 21 days after intercourse. To TEST PREGNANCY AT HOME simply add urine to a small piece of soap, if froth forms, or if the soap bubbles up, the test is positive. Mix ¼ cup of tuna juice and ¼ cup of vinegar in a plastic cup. Now pee in a separate cup and then add your urine to this mixture. After a few minutes, if the color changes to green, then you are pregnant. Take care.

I have been having discharge from my vaginal for sometime, though the fluid is clear, but I don't know why the discharge alway.

MBBS, DNB - Obstetrics & Gynecology
Gynaecologist, Mumbai
Hi lybrate-user vaginal discharge can be infective or non infective. Clear, mucoid, odourless discharge is generally non infective and is common during mid cycle. No treatment is required for such discharge. Itching, bleeding, burning of the area may however, calls for a check up and further treatment.

During periods, is breast tenderness normal? or should I need to consult with gyneochologist?

DGO, MD, MRCOG, CCST, Accredation in Colposcopy
Gynaecologist, Kolkata
During periods, is breast tenderness normal? or should I need to consult with gyneochologist?
You can have breast tenderness in the week leading to periods. It should subside once periods starts ; is bilateral and cyclical. Should not be associated with any lump or discharge. You can still see a gynaecologist if it is bothering you as there are medicines available that might provide relief.
