Male Infertility!

MD - General Medicine
Sexologist, Delhi
Male Infertility!

Male infertility

The main sign of male infertility is the inability to conceive a child. There may be no other obvious signs or symptoms. In some cases, however, an underlying problem such as an inherited disorder, hormonal imbalance, dilated veins around the testicle, or a condition that blocks the passage of sperm causes signs and symptoms.

Although most men with male infertility do not notice symptoms other than inability to conceive a child, signs and symptoms associated with male infertility include:

Problems with sexual function — for example, difficulty with ejaculation or small volumes of fluid ejaculated, reduced sexual desire or difficulty maintaining an erection (erectile dysfunction)
Pain, swelling or a lump in the testicle area

Recurrent respiratory infections
Inability to smell
Abnormal breast growth (gynecomastia)
Decreased facial or body hair or other signs of a chromosomal or hormonal abnormality
Having a lower than normal sperm count (fewer than 15 million sperm per milliliter of semen or a total sperm count of less than 39 million per ejaculate)

What causes Hashimoto's thyroiditis, and what is the best method of treatment? Can iodine help this condition?

PDDM, MHA, MBBS
General Physician, Nashik
Hashimoto's thyroiditis is an autoimmune disease, a disorder in which the immune system turns against the body's own tissues. In people with hashimoto's, the immune system attacks the thyroid. This can lead to hypothyroidism, a condition in which the thyroid does not make enough hormones for the body's needs. There is no cure for hashimoto's, but replacing hormones with medication can regulate hormone levels and restore your normal metabolism. Yes, iodine may help.

Dear Lybrateuser, - Yes, her problem can be solved once her hormone level is brought to normal by medication - also she should have more of fibre containing foods like fruits & vegetables, whole grains instead of refined grains, love fat dairy & healthy fats as in olive, canola oil, walnuts, seafood, avocado, also have more of protein rich foods like beans, lentils, pulses, sprouts (include an item with each meal & also as snacks to loose weight) - restrict fried, processed, carbohydrates & junk foods - do regular exercise like walking for 20-30 min daily - monitor thyroid hormone levels regularly till normalise with medication, consult an endocrinologist.

Mr. lybrate-user, Thanks for the query. First thing to be done is to do a Thyroid Function test, check the hormone levels and come back with the results. The swelling could be due to hypothyroidism or due to hyper activity. Plus there is a need to get ultra sonography of the gland should be done. Please do not rub any juice on the gland. It may do more harm than any good. The thyroid swellings occur because of some internal functional problems. Which can be detected only by proper testing. Hence you may have to go to an endocrinologist near by for getting these things done. Thanks.

Juices are not good for the diabetic patients as they contain only sugar in form of fructose, they do not contain any fibre. Fruits should be eaten eaten instead of juices but that also be in limited quantity. Over intake of any thing can increase the blood sugar level. All diabetic patients should have complex carbohydrates. so you must consult privately so that you can get a proper diet chart according to the patient need.
