I am 21 year old male. I hurt my left shoulder while bench press its not to much but just wanted to start lifting weight again. please suggest.?

Dip. SICOT (Belgium), MNAMS, DNB (Orthopedics), MBBS
Orthopedist, Delhi
Hi thanks for your query and welcome to lybrate. I am Dr. Akshay from fortis hospital, new delhi. You sustained this injury to your left shoulder while doing bench press exercise. It could be just a soft tissue injury but it has to be carefully evaluated and managed. As a general management way, if you have only mild shoulder pain with no associated swelling or any instability, then you should start with activity modification, gentle anti inflammatory medications, physical therapy and wait till your pain and associated symptoms subside. Subsequently start gradually with proper pre activity warmup and a slow increments in physical activity everyday as per pain tolerance. Do not hesitate to contact me if you need any further assistance. You can also discuss your case and treatment plans with me in a greater detail in a private consultation.

Mental Health - Methods to Improve it!

Brain is just like other muscles in the body; stimulation of the brain cells on a continuous basis will lead to a well-functioning brain. In fact, exercising your brain through various brain exercises helps in forming new neural pathways inside it. Neuroplasticity is the ability of the brain to change and adapt when it is stimulated.

The various methods you can adopt to improve your mental health are:

  • Learn a musical instrument: Start taking music classes to learn an instrument such as guitar or piano as it helps in improving mental health. It also helps in delaying age related problems such as Alzheimer's disease.
  • Do math exercises in your head: Try figuring out various mathematical sums inside your head, as this will keep your brain sharp. It has also been known to improve intelligence quotient.
  • Try to recall past events: When you try to recall past events, the section of the brain dealing with memory is stimulated and thus, leads to stronger neural connections.
  • Learning a new language: Learning a new language is good for the brain as well because it helps in delaying the process of decline of cognitive functions. Chances of being affected by mental health disorders decrease significantly.
  • Aerobic exercises: You should follow a regular exercise regimen consisting of aerobic exercises and cardiovascular exercises as they help in improving your blood circulation. Apart from keeping you fitter and lean, it also improves your overall wellbeing.
  • Improve your hand-eye coordination: Do activities such as painting, knitting or solving puzzles as they help in improving your hand eye coordination. It fine tunes your motor skills and keeps you mentally sharp.
  • Cooking: Learning to cook helps in activating various parts of the brain such as sight, smell and taste. This is related to different parts of the brain resulting in an overall development. If you wish to discuss any specific problem, you can consult a psychiatrist.

If I sex with my wife without safety and ejaculate sperm outside the vagina is there any chance of getting her pregnant?

MBBS, MD Psychiatry, DNB Psychiatry
Psychiatrist, Nagpur
Ejaculation of sperms outside vagina does not cause pregnancy. However in sexual intercourse you can not rule out the possibility of some discharge inside the vagina completely. So to avoid pregnancy it is better to us contraception in future.

Attachment Disorder - How It Can Affect You?

Attachment Disorder - How It Can Affect You?

While most children share a strong bond with their parents, especially the mother, some infants are unable to establish lasting relationships with their parents or caregivers. This is known as attachment disorder. It is a rare yet serious condition as it affects the child’s relationships at a later stage and also triggers delinquent behavior. Children, who have been abandoned, orphaned or are victims of abuse are the most vulnerable to this condition.

What causes attachment disorder?
The exact cause for attachment disorder is not yet understood. However, researchers have put together a number of viable hypotheses for this. One such hypothesis suggests that when needs of a child are ignored or when he begins to feel unwanted, the child begins to expect hostility, negativity and rejection. This is a learnt response and the child begins to feel that his needs are unwanted. With time, these responses make the child untrusting and he withdraws into himself to avoid social contact. This affects the development in the brain and causes attachment problems that affect the child’s personality and future relationships.

Risks associated with it
Some children are at a higher risk of attachment disorder than others. This includes

  1. Children living in orphanages or other such institutes
  2. Children whose caregivers are changed frequently
  3. Children who have had prolonged hospitalization
  4. Neglected children
  5. Children who have suffered from physical, sexual or verbal abuse
  6. Children living in extreme poverty
  7. Children born to parents with mental conditions or anger management problems
  8. Children born to a mother suffering from post partum depression

Symptoms
There are two types of attachment disorders; inhibited and disinhibited.

  1. Inhibited attachment disorder: Children suffering from inhibited attachment disorder are likely to be:
    • Detached
    • Withdrawn
    • Unresponsive to comforting ie. they shun all types of relationships and generally do not get along with their peers or caregivers.
  2. Disinhibited attachment disorder: On the other hand, children suffering from disinhibited attachment are likely to:
    • Seek attention
    • Display inappropriate behavior
    • Frequently break social boundaries
    • Be inappropriately familial and attached to selective figures.

Additionally, children suffering from either type of attachment disorder are manipulative, destructive, moody and lack compassion and remorse.
Effects of attachment disorder
If not managed properly in its early stages, this disorder can continue into adulthood. This leads to:

  1. Relationship problems with peers, friends and family members
  2. Low self esteem
  3. Depression
  4. Anger management
  5. Academic problems
  6. Unemployment
  7. They are also at a high risk for drug abuse and alcohol addiction

BP is a fluctuating problem, the factors which lead to fluctuation are very variable. So the best way is to monitor periodically and adjust medication in consultation with your treating doctor accordingly. But if becomes high all of a sudden, first get evaluated for any reason which may be leading to this, so get your self evaluated by a cardiologist, also ensure that you avoid taking caffeine, high salt food in your diet like chips, popcorns, sauces, papads, chutneys etc. Because these lead to increase in BP.

White patches can be due to uncontrolled sugar. You need to have sugar in control. And it will subside itself. Go for your glucose levels and hba1c levels. Do reply with reports.

My boyfriend had a pimple like spot on his actual upper lip and he went down on me but I am not 100% sure if it was a pimple or not. I kissed him and I did not catch anything on my lips and he said he popped it and white puss came out. I have done my research and I know that coldsores have clear fluid and not puss and if a couple mutually have the same hsv virus then they are unlikely to pass it to each other. I also know that if I already have the same hsv virus in my system then I can't pass it to another body part? However I am still unsure Thank you.
