Is surgery the only remedy for Anal Fistula? What are cause/cure/? How much time it takes to heal completely!

FMAS, MS
General Surgeon, Gandhinagar
Dear Vikas , hi Warm welcome to Lybrate.com I have evaluated your query thoroughly . * Anal fistula cure is surgery only ( medicines give primary relief only ) . * Cause is infection leading to discharging sinus formation from skin extending to various internal parts over the peri anal region . * Healing time depends upon the complexity of fistula . If simple , not much deep heals within 2-3 weeks ; If complex , compound with multiple internal extensions , tracks , may take even months to heal . Hope this will help you for sure . Wishing you fine recovery & happy Diwali . Regards dear take care .

Lateral anal sphincterotomy only give one time healing of anal fissures? Or this surgery helps to prevent fissure occurring in later stage and if still fissures occurs this surgery gives very quick healing than other people who do not do LIS surgery?

MS - General Surgery, DNB - Surgical Gastroenterology, MBBS
Surgical Gastroenterologist, Ghaziabad
This is not a preventative surgery, prevention can be by avoiding constipation, take high fibre diet plenty of water and laxative, if you are suffering for long then thorough evaluation is Must.

Why there are different opinion regarding anal fissures when some colorectal surgeons say after LIS surgery anal fissures do not come if occasionally stool becomes hard where other say it can come if stool get hard? But the fact is fissures occurs due to high resting pressure of internal sphincter muscle and during LIS surgery this high resting pressure reduce to normal pressure so why after surgery still fissure comes if stool get hard? But generally all people do not get fissures or ulcers if stool becomes hard, some people are habitually constipated still no anal fissures face.

General Surgeon, Srinagar
Hello user. Good to see you have researched quite a bit about your disease. Basically high pressure of the int. Sphinc. Is not the cause. It propagates the condition and doesn't allow the fissure to heal. Anal fissure fails to heal because of a cycle between constipation=pain=spasm. By doing LIS (lateral internal sphincterotomy) we break the cycle by targeting spasm and allow nature to heal the fissure. But still you can have hard stool sometimes causing injury to the delicate anal mucosa leading to fissure. But the difference is it will heal quickly as compared to in a patient whose internal sphincter is intact. So even if you have undergone an LIS, You should always avoid constipation by taking lots of fruits and fluids. You can add stool softners to diet. Besides make doing sitz bath bedtime a habit. It Dsnt cost anything. Does it? Hope it clears your doubts. Feel free to enquire more. Regards.

10 Homeopathic Remedies To Treat Irritable Bowel Syndrome!

Irritable bowel syndrome is a disorder that is diagnosed on the basis of its symptoms. It is characterised by intense abdominal pain, discomfort, bloating and change in bowel habits. One of the primary symptoms of IBS is abdominal pain. It may also be accompanied with frequent diarrhoea or constipation. There might also be a feeling of partial or incomplete evacuation. The symptoms are sometimes relieved by the proper bowel movement. Other symptoms, in this case, include depression and anxiety. In rare cases, there is also a possibility of sexual dysfunction and a reduced libido.

Causes of Irritable Bowel Syndrome–

The exact reason behind the occurrence of IBS is not known. It is a disruption of the brain-gut axis that is known to cause the problem. It is also caused due to small intestinal bacterial overgrowth.

Triggering factors–

IBS is intensified or triggered by the following factors:

  1. Foods: Edibles like chocolate, milk and alcohol might lead to constipation or diarrhoea. One must also avoid carbonated beverages and some fruits and vegetables. These might lead to bloating and discomfort.

  2. Stress: The condition gets worse with any type of stress.

  3. Hormones: In women, the symptoms occur as a result of the hormones during menstrual periods.

  4. Complications: It is not associated with any fatal condition. But it can lead to diarrhoea and constipation and aggravate hemorrhoids.

Adverse Impacts of the Disease-

IBS has an adverse impact on your lifestyle. It will limit your ability to get social or carry out your daily professional activities. You will find it difficult to cope up with the symptoms while living away from your comfort zone or home. You will not have a good sex life. You will get depressed and may even feel suicidal in extreme cases.

Treatment of Irritable Bowel Syndrome-

IBS is treated broadly by bringing in certain changes in the lifestyle. To begin with, you are advised to check your diet. Include fibre in your diet, if you are suffering from constipation. Also, avoid oily, spicy and hot food items. Besides, you are prescribed medicines such as stool softeners and laxatives and antispasmodic drugs and proton pump inhibitors.

Homeopathic medicines-IBS requires prolonged treatment. Homoeopathy works best to get you relief from the symptoms and cures it, from the roots. Here are certain homeopathic remedies that are helpful in treating the disorder.

  1. Argentum nitricum

  2. Asafoetida

  4. Lilium tigrinum

  5. Lycopodium

  6. Natrum carbonicum

  7. Nux vomica

  8. Podophyllum

  9. Sulphur

  10. Aloe

It has to be kept in mind that these are just basic remedies. There are over 150 Homeopathic medicines that can be used for treating IBS. Thus, consult a doctor for the best remedy for you as per the symptoms.

Dear sir, I am suffering from portal cavernosa, gall bladder stones, two veins from liver to spleen has been blocked, constipation some time lose motion, and stomach bloats. Digestion problem but having good appetite.

MBBS, M.S. General Surgery

Dear sir,
I am suffering from portal cavernosa, gall bladder stones, two veins from liver to spleen has been blocked...
Take the positive aspect you have first. You do have a good appetite. Constipation and loose motions can be overcome when you have the right type of food. High fiber diet, fruits, vegetables, drink about 2 liters of water a day at least. This diet would even reduce the bloating feeling of the abdomen. In your case, taking smaller amount of food may be five times a day is better than consuming larger amount of food three times a day. Regarding gall stones and blocked hepato-splenic veins, please do consult a gastroenterologist regarding management.
