Irritable Bowel Syndrome or IBS and its Homeopathic treatment!

MD - Homeopathy
Homeopath, Aurangabad
Irritable Bowel Syndrome or IBS and its Homeopathic treatment!

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) or spastic colon is a rather common intestinal tract disease which is characterized by sharp pain in the stomach, stomach gas, diarrhea or constipation. It is a chronic condition whose exact cause, although unknown, is sometimes attributed to the dysfunctional production of the neurotransmitter, dopamine.

There is no particular treatment for IBS. However, the symptoms can be brought under control through various methods. The symptoms of IBS can be controlled by making lifestyle changes such as incorporating certain modifications to your diet and reducing or managing stress levels. For severe symptoms, you may require medications.

Patients may also consider homeopathic treatment for a rather wholesome effect and lesser side effects. The purpose of homeopathic treatment is to stimulate the body’s inner self-balancing mechanisms. In order to achieve this, this person must be provided with the right solution at the right time. Since homeopathy aims at treating the root cause of the problem, the treatment is stretched over a longer period of time. Additionally, homeopathy functions by stimulating the natural healing capabilities of the body. Some of the common homeopathic medications that can be used to treat IBS are listed below:

  1. Pulsatilla: Prepared from a medicinal plant known as wind flower, Pulsatilla is effective in the cure of IBS with its remedying effect on the gastrointestinal tract.
  2. Nux Vomica: This too is derived from a plant and has a positive effect on the digestive and nervous system, thereby being effective in the treatment of IBS.
  3. Sulphur: It is one of the most common choices among homeopathic practitioners for IBS. Sulphur affects the digestive tract and is helpful in the treatment of intestinal gas and constipation. It is usually prescribed for individuals who are rather thin and physically weak.
  4. Lycopodium Clavatum: This is mainly prescribed for people with diarrhea and stomach gas. This drug acts specifically on the gastrointestinal tract
  5. Asafoetida: This drug is prescribed when there is a fairly common constriction in the bowel muscles. In case you have a concern or query you can always consult an expert & get answers to your questions!

Chronic Functional Abdominal Pain - Understanding It In Detail!

Chronic Functional Abdominal Pain - Understanding It In Detail!

In most cases, pain anywhere in the body can be explained as a symptom of some other problem, but sometimes, there is no reason for abdominal pain. This type of pain is known as chronic functional abdominal pain. This is a gastrointestinal disorder that cannot be explained through X-ray or laboratory findings. It can be triggered by altered sensitivity to nerve impulses in the brain and gut. People suffering from this condition are often so debilitated by the pain that it becomes the central focus of their life.

This condition cannot be cured, but with proper treatment, it can be managed so that it does not affect the quality of your life. The aim of treatment for this condition is to control the symptoms and improve functioning. When it comes to treating this condition, the patient’s relationship with his or her doctor plays an important role as the condition cannot be proven through any form of testing and it has a great psychological effect on the person. Regular checkups are also a key to managing this condition effectively.

The first step towards achieving this is to identify possible emotional and situational triggers. Maintaining a journal that records these experiences can help with this. Further treatment is usually either through psychological treatment or antidepressants.

Psychological treatment is based on the understanding that the brain can block pain by diverting attention elsewhere. Nerve impulses that travel from the abdomen to the brain must pass through a type of ‘gate’ that is controlled by nerve impulses generated by the brain. When these impulses close the gates, pain is blocked while when these gates are open, the pain can be magnified. Psychological treatment for chronic functional abdominal pain can be in the form of relaxation techniques, imagery, hypnosis and cognitive behavioral therapy. While relaxation techniques such as meditation and hypnosis help a person shift focus from the pain, cognitive behavioral therapy teaches a person how to change thoughts and perceptions in order to control the pain.

Antidepressants can also act as pain relievers. This form of medication stimulates the production of brain signals that close the ‘gates’ of nerve transmissions. This blocks the pain but can take several weeks to be effective. Some people may experience side effects such as drowsiness and nausea and hence should never be taken without a doctor’s supervision. In some cases, antidepressants may also be combined with cognitive behavioral therapy or medication to regulate bowels.

Asymptomatic Neoplastic Pancreatic Cysts - How It Can Be Managed?

MS - Surgery, MAMS, Senior Residency , MBBS, Fellow IAGES
Surgical Gastroenterologist, Delhi
Asymptomatic Neoplastic Pancreatic Cysts - How It Can Be Managed?

The diagnosis as well as management of pancreatic cystic lesions is a general problem. Nearly 1% of the patients in the chief medical centers have been observed to have pancreatic cystic lesions on cross sectional imaging. It has also been observed that a quarter of all pancreas scanned in an autopsy series contain pancreatic cysts. Earlier, these cystic lesions were regarded benign but with increasing evidence made available from the cystic lesions, they are regarded as origin of pancreatic malignancies.

Information on Asymptomatic Neoplastic Pancreatic Cysts
The most vital medical tools that are used in the diagnosis and management of pancreatic cystic lesions include the endoscopic ultrasound and cross sectional imaging. These are used to distinguish non-mucinous cysts from mucinous cysts. The identification of pancreatic cysts creates a lot of anxiety for the clinicians as well as the patients related to the probable presence of a fatal tumor. The findings of a macro cystic lesion that enclose viscous fluid loaded in CEA are helpful in the analysis of a mucinous lesion.

The most common pancreatic cysts are the non-neoplastic inflammatory pseudo cysts, and they can be detected easily by imaging. The identification of pancreatic irregularity with probable association with malignant cells is a vital source of referral for the specialist. The set of guidelines that have been proposed for the management and diagnosis of patients with asymptomatic neoplastic pancreatic cysts are based specifically on the analysis of the quality of the data. It is also designed to address the most important and frequent clinical scenarios. The diagnostic suggestions are provided based on the clinical problem as well as the risk of malignancy.

Imperative Guidelines to Follow
To achieve accurate diagnosis of asymptomatic neoplastic pancreatic cysts is indeed a great challenge. It is all the more important to find the reproducible methods that can be used to stratify threat of cancer for the patients. The main guidelines include a two year screening interval of cysts that can be of any size as well as stopping observation after 5 years, in case there is no change.  The new guidelines, for the most part, recommend surgery if more than one concerning feature is confirmed on the MRI by use of endoscopic ultrasound. The new guidelines even suggest discontinuation of inspection after the surgery if no dysplasia or invasive cancer is identified. The guidelines have mainly been developed by use of Grading of Recomendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation. In case you have a concern or query you can always consult an expert & get answers to your questions!

Reasons Behind Gas Pain in Children!

dnb pediatrics
Pediatrician,
Reasons Behind Gas Pain in Children!

Gas or flatulence is a condition where the microorganisms present in the intestines break down the food and release excessive gases such as carbon dioxide and methane, which is usually let out from the anus. It can lead to pain in the stomach and an uneasy feeling in the body.

Causes
1. When foods that are not digested properly are broken down
2. Lactose intolerance
3. Swallowing air
4. Certain foods not being absorbed properly in the digestive system
5. When a child does other activities, while eating, then it can cause gas to accumulate air in the intestines leading to gas
6. The sweeteners present in chewing gums can get trapped in the intestines and ferment into gas
7. Vegetables such as cauliflower and broccoli can cause gas
8. Soft drinks that cause phosphoric acid can also lead to gas
9. Some children are sensitive to fat and fiber, and consuming these nutrients can lead to gas

The symptoms of gas pain in children are cramps in the stomach region along with diarrhea. It can also lead to irregular eating, being fussy about food and pulling up the legs to the belly.

Treatments and preventive measures
1. Consuming food containing probiotics such as yoghurt and soy can help in treating gas
2. Eliminating vegetables such as broccoli and cauliflower from your child's diet
3. Decreasing the amount of milk in the diet
4. Limiting consumption of chewing gums as they contain artificial sweeteners , which cause gas
5. A hot drink such as tea made from herbs like peppermint can help in easing the symptoms of gas
6. Encouraging your child to exercise can help in preventing gas
7. Getting your child to drink water in proper amounts
8. Consuming a healthy diet of vegetables and fruits

No use taking LIV52 or probiotics for the Fatty liver. As for diarrhea, try changing your diet and consuming less of red meat. If the diarrhea is occurring quite frequently and with crampy pain, then it may be infective and you will need to take antibiotics. Metformin may in many patients cause diarrhea. It will be worth knowing for how long have you been on the Metformin? In case you need further help, do book an online consult and we can discuss.

What are the percentage of chances that fistula will reoccur after surgery? How to prevent to it come again?

M.S. (Ayurveda), Bachelor of Ayurveda, Medicine and Surgery (BAMS)
Ayurveda, Delhi
In about 20 % cases Fistula recurs after surgery. Besides this there are chances of complications like stool incontinence - inability to hold stool. So surgery is not a good choice for Anal Fistula Treatment. Whereas Ayurveda recommends Ksharsutra Treatment for Anal Fistula which is the permanent treatment for fistula. Complications like Recurrence of Fistula, stool incontinence are not seen in this treatment. Clinical trials conducted by Indian Council of Medical Sciences (ICMR) at AIIMS New Delhi and PGI Chandigarh have proven that Ksharsutra Treatment is more convenient and more successful as compared to Surgery in case of Anal Fistula patients. No hospitalization or bed rest is required in this treatment. You can continue your routine activities and office work as usual during this treatment. In this treatment, a medicated thread is placed in Ksharsutra tract, Medicine present in Ksharsutra works for about 10 days so it needs to be changed after 10/ 15 days. No. Of thread changes required for complete healing of Fistula depends on length, depth and branching pattern of Fistula. Fistula heals @ 0.5 to 1 cm per thread change. You can contact through Lybrate or consult in person at clinic for clinical assessment of your Fistula.

I had a stone in my ureter which is approx. 9.4 mm. So I want to ask whether it can passes normally through my penis or should I take some medicine to break it.

MS Surgery, M.Ch. Urology
Urologist, Vadodara
I had a stone in my ureter which is approx. 9.4 mm. So I want to ask whether it can passes normally through my penis ...
Dear lybrate-user, 9.4 mm stones are unlikely to break or pass spontaneously with medicines. It is better to get it removed endoscopically. Usually a 7 to 10 day trial of medicines is enough for 6 to 7 mm stones. If they don't pass, they need to be removed. For 9 mm stones we don't recommend medical treatment, we advise endoscopic surgery. Good luck.
