Fatty Liver - What Causes It?

Fatty liver is a condition where excess fat is deposited on this organ. Also called as steatosis, this condition happens when more than 5- 10 percent of the weight of the liver is made up of fat.

Fatty liver is a common condition among people. A study from coastal regions of India found ~ 25% of healthy persons had patients had fatty liver on ultrasound.

It can occur at all ages including childhood, highest prevalence is in 40–50 year age group. Prevalence more in patient who are obese and in diabetic patients.

Types of Fatty Liver

1. Alcoholic fatty liver: This condition occurs when there is a heavy consumption of alcohol. Gastroenterologists recommend abstention from alcohol for this condition to subside. If the patient continues to consume alcohol, then liver cirrhosis may develop.

2. Non-alcoholic fatty liver (NAFL): One may develop a fatty liver even if one is not an alcoholic. The liver in some cases is unable to process the fat in cells causing them to build-up on the organ.

When more than 10% of the liver is made of fat then this condition is called Non Alcoholic Fatty Liver (NAFL).

Non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH): When fatty liver is associated with inflammation in liver patient is said to be having Non alcoholic steatohepatitis. NASH is a more advanced stage of NAFLD, and has a higher risk of progressing to liver cirrhosis or hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). These condition display symptoms like jaundice, vomiting, nausea, loss of appetite and abdominal pain. Blood test (LFT) shows raised enzymes level. Approx 5-8% of the Indian population has NASH. Consult a doctor if you are experiencing any of these symptoms.

3. Fatty liver during pregnancy: Occurring mainly in the third trimester, the symptoms of this condition are vomiting, nausea, pain the right part of the abdomen and jaundice.

Symptoms

During the early stages (fatty liver) of the disease, patients usually have no symptoms directly related to liver disease. However, people may experience a vague abdominal discomfort. If their liver is inflamed (NASH) then they may display symptoms of poor appetite, weight loss, pain in the abdomen and disorientation.

What causes fatty liver?

The most common cause of fatty liver is alcoholism. When the human liver is unable to metabolize fat fast enough or when there is an excess accumulation of fat on the liver cells then the liver becomes fatty. However, intake of high-fat foods may not result in a fatty liver.

Predisposing factor:

  1. Diabetes mellitus
  2. Obesity or being overweight
  3. Hyperlipidemia or the condition where there are high levels of fat in the blood
  4. Genetic reasons
  5. Rapid loss of weight
  6. Drugs: Aspirin, steroids, tamoxifen, tetracycline etc. cause side effects which also leads to fatty liver
  7. Nutritional status (eg, overnutrition, severe malnutrition, total parenteral nutrition [TPN], or starvation diet)
  8. Other health problems (eg, Hepatitis C infection, celiac sprue and Wilson disease)

What is the treatment for fistula? Is surgery necessary or can be treated in some other way? Please give the best treatment.

Fistula is a difficult disease to treat from my point of view. It is known for reccurence even after surgery. So my personal preference is to put a seton in the fistulous tract and promote self and natural healing.

Hi, Respected Doctor confirms anal fissure with sentinel piles. Advised Diltigesic Cream application. I feel itching sensation when applied. Is it normal?

Ya. It is fine. Try to take hot sitz bath with Betadine solution twice daily. Please rem that Diltigesic oint may cause mild headache which is normal.

I am liver patient. In a month twice I had liver pain. That time I take aceclofenac 150 mg IP. How many time I take the IP per day.

You will take Udiliv450 mg one tab twice daily after meal for 20 days, then LIV-52 DS one tab before meal for 3 months, 3 to 4 spoon Glucose with water everyday.

Pls tell the way for permanent cure of anal fissure? Lateral sphincterotomy was already done 1 year ago. Colonoscopy done result all normal. But still occasionally anal fissure is coming and going. Generally I go toilet two times in a day but occasionally get little hard stool, little means very little. Only first part is little hard then semi solid still anal fissure is occurring.

I insist you to increase your water intake and check on your dietary part. Very less fibres with less water will create this kind of recurrent situation. A help from a dietitian of nutritionist is often very helpful.

If the size of stone is smaller then it get dissolves with medicines but if they are large enough then surgery is the only option for gases you take triphala powder 1 tsf with Luke warm water after dinner.

Doing this can aid digestion and may minimize the production of gas. Get regular exercise. Physical activity can help your intestines expel gas and stay regular. Exercise for at least 30 minutes most days of the week. If you are unable to do 30 minutes, aim for 2 15-minute sessions of physical movement, which can also ease flatulence. पित्त की पथरी एक बेहद भयंकर और पीड़ादायक रोग है. इस दौरान पित्त में कोलेस्ट्रॉल और पिग्‍मेन्‍ट नामक दो तरह के पदार्थ बनते हैं. लेकिन लगभग अस्सी प्रतिशत पथरी कोलेस्ट्रॉल से ही बनती हैं. पित्त लिवर में बनता है और इसका भंडारण गॉल ब्लैडर में होता है. यह पित्त फैट युक्त भोजन को पचाने में मदद करता है. लेकिन जब पित्त में कोलेस्ट्रॉल और बिलरुबिन की मात्रा ज्यादा हो जाती है, तो पथरी का निर्माण होता है. पित्त की पथरी को घरेलू उपचार के माध्‍यम से ठीक किया जा सकता है. आइए इसके उपचार के बारे में जानें.
सेब का रस और सिरका
बेशक, सेब डॉक्टर को दूर रखने में मदद करता है. इसलिए एक गिलास सेब के रस में सेब साइडर सिरका का एक बड़ा चम्मच मिलाकर नियमित रूप दिन में एक बार सेवन करना चाहिए. सेब में मेलिक एसिड होता है जो पित्त पथरी नरमी में सहायता करता है और सिरका पत्थर के कारण कोलेस्ट्रॉल बनाने से लीवर को रोकता है. यह एक पित्त की पथरी के हमले के दौरान दर्द को कम करने एक त्वरित उपाय है.
नाशपती
नाशपती पित्त की पथरी के लिए बहुत फायदेमंद होती है. अमेरिका मेडिकल एसोसिएशन के अनुसार, लगभग 80 प्रतिशत पित्त में पथरी कोलेस्‍ट्रॉल के बनने से होती है. नाशपाती में पेक्टिन होता है इन पत्थरों को आसानी से फ्लश आउट के लिए कोलेस्ट्रॉल से भरे पित्त पथरी को बांधता है.
चुकंदर, खीरा और गाजर का रस
पित्ताशय की थैली को साफ और मजबूत करने और लीवर की सफाई के लिए चुकंदर का रस, ककड़ी का रस और गाजर के रस को बराबर मात्रा में मिलाये. यह संयोजन आपको पेट और खून की सफाई में भी मदद करता है. खीरे में मौजूद उच्च पानी सामग्री और गाजर में विटामिन सी की उच्च मात्रा मूत्राशय से विषाक्त पदार्थों को बाहर निकालती है.
सिंहपर्णी
सिंहपर्णी के पत्ते लीवर का समर्थन, मूत्राशय के कामकाज में सहायता, पित्त उत्सर्जन को बढ़ावा, और विषाक्त पदार्थों को बाहर निकालने में मदद करते हैं. एक कप पानी में एक बड़ा चम्‍मच सिंहपर्णी के पत्तों को मिलाये. फिर इसे अवशोषित करने के‍ लिये पांच मिनट के लिए रख दें. अब इसमें एक चम्‍मच शहद मिलाये. मधुमेह रोगियों को इस उपचार से बचना चाहिए.
पुदीना
पुदीने में टेरपेन नामक प्राकृतिक तत्‍व होता है, जो पित्त से पथरी को घुलाने के लिए जाना जाता है. यह पित्त प्रवाह और अन्य पाचक रस को उत्तेजित करता है, इसलिए यह पाचन में भी सहायक होता है. पित्त की पथरी के लिए घरेलू उपाय के रूप में पुदीने की चाय का इस्‍तेमाल करें.
इसबगोल
एक उच्च फाइबर आहार, पित्ताशय की थैली की पथरी के इलाज के लिए बहुत आवश्यक है.  इसबगोल घुलनशील फाइबर का अच्‍छा स्रोत होने के कारण पित्त में कोलेस्ट्रॉल को बांधता है और पथरी के गठन को रोकने में मदद करता है. आप इसे अपने अन्‍य फाइबर युक्त भोजन के साथ या रात को बिस्‍तर पर जाने से पहले एक गिलास पानी के साथ ले सकते हैं.
नींबू का रस
नींबू का रस प्रकृतिक रूप से अम्लीय होने के कारण यह सिरके की तरह कार्य करता है और लीवर में कोलेस्ट्रॉल को बनने से रोकता है. हर रोज खाली पेट चार नींबू का रस लें. इस प्रक्रिया को एक हफ्ते तक अपनाएं. इससे पथरी की समस्या आसानी से दूर हो सकती है.
लाल शिमला मिर्च
2013 में हुए एक अध्ययन के अनुसार, शरीर में भरपूर मात्रा में विटामिन सी पथरी की समस्‍या कम करता है. एक लाल शिमला मिर्च में लगभग 95 मिलीग्राम विटामिन सी होता है, यह मात्रा पथरी को रोकने के लिए काफी होती है. इसलिए अपने आहार में शिमला मिर्च को शामिल करें.
वाइन
शोधकर्ताओं ने पाया कि 1/2 गिलास वाइन पित्त की पथरी के हमलों को लगभग चालीस प्रतिशत तक कम कर सकता है. इसलिए वाइन के एक गिलास को अपनी दिनचर्या में शमिल करें इससे ज्यादा नहीं.
साबुत अनाज
पानी में घुलनशील फाइबर युक्त खाद्य पदार्थों जैसे साबुत अनाज और अन्य अनाज को अपने आहार में भरपूर मात्रा में शामिल करें. फाइबर कोलेस्ट्रॉल और ट्राइग्लिसराइड के स्तर को कम कर स्वाभाविक रूप से पथरी को बनने से रोकने में मदद करते हैं.
