Mental Health - Know How Excessive Use of Social Networking Affects it!

Social networking refers to a multitude of websites that let the people from across the globe to get in touch with each other and interact through photos, videos discussions or audio. To name a few, Facebook tops the list by having over 1.2 billion active users monthly from across the world, followed by Twitter, Snapchat and LinkedIn.

As per the latest statistics, around 42% of people online at one time, are using social networking sites either on their laptops or mobiles. Majority of this population is below 30 years of age, whereas the figure is changing for internet users aged 65 years and above. People use these sites to stay in touch with family and friends, to share things, express their views on matters and to find out what's happening in the other corner of the world.

But this usage can have many negative effects on the mental health and well-being of users both children and adults.

  1. It is addictive: It has been analyzed that these social networking sites are often addictive with people using them daily or even several times during a day. They log in to these sites for many reasons like to overcome boredom, distraction, to check their likes and comments which are usually a positive support after posting a status or information.
  2. It makes us do unfair comparisons: Various posts on social media at times make people compare their lives with others. And it is said, the grass is always greener on the other side, it makes you feel low thinking how idealized are the lives of people connected to you.
  3. Social media makes us restless: Many people start feeling restless when they are unable to access their social media accounts.
  4. Cyberbullying: Social media increases cyberbullying specifically in adolescents.
  5. Increased use of alcohol: Social media glamorizes the use of drugs and alcohol since the teenagers often view the pictures of people using it and out of peer pressure would like to try them.
  6. Social media increases unhappiness: Enthusiastic users feel that social media fluctuates their moods also leaving them dissatisfied in their lives.
  7. FOMO: It might also lead to FOMO, fear of missing out. Pinterest might give you a feeling that you are not creative or talented, Twitter and Facebook might make you feel that you are not smart and are not enjoying your life enough.

Excess of social networking might also lead to problems like stress and anxiety, feeling of imperfection, may induce a feeling of being miserable or in some cases might even cripple the basic need for social interaction. It has been known to create a digital landscape, exerts an unnecessary and increased pressure on the generation today and the general population has to a larger extent. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a doctor.

Could you recommend something for memory which does not cause cold. I am 34 years old ,A mother of a one year baby. My memory has been weak though I was good in academics due to hard work. Good in office too when I was working that too due to hard work because I make some arrangement to remind me things in the office but in daily life good memory is essential for peace. Post marriage after several revisions also I forget my husband side relatives and that cause many problems and embarrassment. I can not remember the ways also. I wonder seeing the girls who have met the relatives only ones but they can remember. Please help.

You are not able to remember because you are experiencing stress and anxiety about forgetting. More tense you are more you forget. That is great news! you no longer have to think you are very ordinary as you are preparing to make yourself extra-ordinary! not all of us become ias. All you need is good guidance. No. Why call police? The girl does not seem to be a sensible one. You and your friend have been blessed by god that she married elsewhere! just try to think, had she got married to your friend and then had cheated him by going to her previous lover/friend, what life would have been like! strongly suggest, ask your friend not to bother about her any longer and rather concentrate to better his own life in terms of career, family, etc. Let him close all eyes and ears for her and focus on his life. When she sees, no response from his side will go back. You may not be required to do anything else best of luck. Happy diwali.

I am 30 of a male suffering from generalized anxiety disorder facing symptoms like severe numbness in head, world seems dreamy dreamy, fear in public, foggy and distorted vision always thinking how I ll cum out of this. Please help since 2 years I am having this eating vegetables and fruits but still its not curable. Rply and tell me whether slowly slowly this scary symptoms will vanish or not. Lightheaded is one more thing which is unbearable for me. One of psychologist told eat healthy n sleep healthy is the only way to cure it. Brain fog and distorted vision are the worst problem I am facing. Will it disappear slowly if stamina get increased.

First of all, stop stressing yourself by thinking toooo much about how you will manage. Just give it a head-on start and start preparing. Keep your office work light by taking your colleagues and boss into confidence about exams. Am very sure, if you seek their help, they will be helpful. Next, keep your focus all the time on preparation. Do little bits at a time. E.g. One little topic in whatever time you can squeeze out, even in office. Do not sit with friends over lunch- finish off fast at your desk, start with studies in lunch time. Likewise, while travel, etc. Make a list of all topics covered and pat your back each time you complete one more topic. Keep counting your topics covered, on a separate sheet, write a list of all to be covered, and keep striking out those you are done with. This will give you a lot of confidence. Am sure, you will be able to manage successfully. Best of luck.

After vagus schwannoma surgery I almost lost my voice. And I got thyroplasty 1 to fix it but did not get any improvements even after one and half month of thyroplasty. Are there any chances for improvement in waiting or go for anything else.
