Gynecomastia (Male Breast) - Is Surgery The Best Option?

Gynecomastia (Male Breast) - Is Surgery The Best Option?

Are you thinking of undergoing a surgical procedure to get rid of your enlarged breasts? This condition, which involves the enlargement of the breast tissue in men is known as gynecomastia. It is commonly referred to as ‘man boobs’. The condition is not always permanent, but is quite embarrassing for any man to face. Among the various modes of treatment of gynecomastia, surgery is considered to be an ideal method after taking into consideration long-term results.

Treatment

  1. Usually, this condition requires no treatment. When it occurs because of a certain health condition, professional treatment is required to be carried out.
  2. Surgery is an effective option for restoring your chest shape, which improves your self-image rapidly.
  3. During the surgical procedure, a small incision is made on your breasts and all extra breast tissues are eliminated. This results in smaller and flatter breasts.
  4. Your nipple may also be repositioned during the procedure.
  5. Surgery is considered to be the best long-term treatment measure for gynecomastia.
  6. You need to follow a very healthy lifestyle for maintaining your new breast shape.
  7. An unhealthy lifestyle may lead to the recurrence of gynecomastia, and you should abstain from gaining too much weight and taking drugs.
  8. Can be performed under tumescent anaesthesia.

Pros and Cons of Gynecomastia surgery

  1. Usually, breast reduction surgery is not considered to be a very sensible option for reducing man boobs.
  2. When you are not suffering from a medical condition that demands the surgery, such as having cancerous lumps in the breasts, undergoing a surgery is generally not recommended by a lot of health professionals.
  3. It is quite expensive and many health professionals consider natural ways for reducing man breasts to be more healthy instead of undergoing invasive procedures.
  4. For people who want to get rid of their man boobs as soon as possible, and people who are couch potatoes, gynecomastia surgery is the best way.
  5. In case you are undergoing treatment for gynecomastia for more than a year, and are observing no results or improvements, your gynecomastia may be of chronic type. In such cases, you may need to undergo a surgery for the removal of your glandular breast tissue.

However, there are several side effects that are associated with a gynecomastia surgery. Although there are many options for the management of gynecomastia, such as following a strict diet plan, working out regularly, and making other lifestyle modifications, a surgery is effective for a fast removal of the breast tissues. It is more long-term than any other treatment when followed properly.

The Vampire Face Lift - Understanding The Procedure!

The Vampire Face Lift - Understanding The Procedure!

We all crave for that eternally youthful looking face when we look into the mirror. We all wonder how some celebrities never seem to age at all. The glow and skin does not seem to age at all, and seeing them, the question we have is what is the magic here? The answer lies within themselves, which is their own blood. Using the own blood to maintain youthful looks is one of the most recent techniques in anti-ageing, and this is known as vampire facelift.

How does it work?

  1. The blood is the carrier and supplier of vital nutrients to the entire body. It carries the vital nutrients in a fluid medium called the plasma.
  2. In addition to the nutrients, it also has what are called blood cells (red and white) and growth factors which are essential for regulating growth. By separating out the various components, a high concentration of the growth factors is extracted.
  3. This plasma-rich fluid (PRF) is then injected into specific parts of the face (generally the face, but other parts can also be treated). So, whether a person has sinking eyes or hollow cheeks, they can be managed

Origin and Popularity
This technique was originally used in injured athletes with torn ligaments and joints. By providing a rich supply of nutrients and growth factors, it helps in quicker healing, restoring shape, improving tone, and overall rejuvenation of the injured area. Though not actually an injury, the changes that the face goes through are a part of degeneration with age. Cosmetic surgeons believed the same could be extended to treat the age changes in the face, and so vampire facelift gained popularity.

Procedure:

  1. The first step is to find yourself a well-trained and experienced surgeon
  2. A thorough discussion of how the procedure will happen and what to expect after the procedure. Expectations should be realistically set for both the surgeon and the patient.
  3. What the surgeon can do and what the patient wants should be aligned to achieve the outcomes.
  4. Using historic and current records of the patient (pictures mostly) and using other standard measurements, the desirable outcomes are set down.
  5. In the case of hollow cheeks or under-eye areas, dermal fillers (usually of hyaluronic acid) may be used to create some fullness.
  6. The blood is then extracted and centrifuged to separate the plasma-rich fluid
  7. This is then injected into various predetermined areas of the skin to do the corrections.
  8. This could include younger glowing skin, improved fullness, improved firmness of the skin, etc.
  9. The first session requires about 3 sittings with repeat sessions in about 4 weeks.
  10. It can be repeated annually if required.

Hair Transplant - 10 Facts You Must Be Aware Of!

Hair Transplant - 10 Facts You Must Be Aware Of!

If you are thinking about undergoing hair transplantation, it is important for you to know about the procedure in detail, and the various steps it involves. Hair transplantation is a surgical technique in which hair follicles from the donor site are moved to a bald or balding part called the recipient site. The procedure is commonly used for treating male pattern baldness.

This is a minimally invasive procedure in which grafts containing hair follicles are transplanted to the bald scalp. Here are some facts about hair transplantation you should know about:

  1. This is a surgical procedure which yields permanent results. You should undertake proper research before going for hair transplantation. Choosing the right surgeon is very important.
  2. Several factors are considered to assess a person’s donor supply. These include the examination of your scalp by means of a Densitometer. The scalp laxity of the patient is another important factor.
  3. It is recommended not to move a large amount of hair during a single transplantation session. Extra long sessions are associated with the risk of sub-optimal growth.
  4. There are limitations on the blood supply of the scalp for sustaining the growth of newly transplanted grafts. In case of very large grafts, overwhelming blood supply results in poor hair growth.
  5. The chances of a successful hair transplant are more in patients who are older. Hair loss starting at an early age is unpredictable and increases the chances of extensive hair loss in the future.
  6. A hair transplant takes almost one full year to mature completely. The hair grows at a slow rate that is hard to notice.
  7. In spite of technological advances in hair restoration, doctors are dependent on a person’s donor supply which is limited. In many cases, the donor area is too thin to aid hair transplantation.
  8. The density depends on the amount of hair that is transplanted to a certain area, and not on the size of the grafts.
  9. In case of a scalp reduction, the size of a bald area is decreased by cutting it out. For closing the gap, the scalp has to be advanced from the sides and back of the scalp.
  10. Many people think that laser hair transplant is a modern procedure, while actually it was introduced about twelve years ago. It is usually not employed by the best hair transplant surgeons. Lasers are not an integral part of hair transplantation as they are only used for making the recipient sites during the surgery

How Good Is The Stem Cell Face Lift?

MCh - Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, MBBS, MS - General Surgery, Fellowship Reconstructive Microsurgery

How Good Is The Stem Cell Face Lift?

The skin is constantly exposed to sun and multiple environmental pollutants, causing a lot of degeneration. The face, being the most exposed part, bears the brunt of this. A number of dark spots, wrinkles, sagging, fine lines, etc. appear as a result of ageing and become very prominent on the face. Not just are these cosmetic concerns, but they also affect the person’s morale.

Origin:
The body has millions of types of cells, but there are some known as stem cells which are totipotent the ability to transform into any type of cell (blood, bone, muscle, skin, etc.) These totipotent stem cells were used earlier in treating sports injuries to repair joints and ligaments. They are present in large numbers in fat and so the affected joint would be injected with fat, and the stem cells from here would help in regeneration of the joint. The same concept was extended by cosmetic surgeons to treat facial ageing problems. Fat extracted from an area (usually abdomen or inner thigh) is injected into predetermined areas on the face. These then act as fillers and help in skin rejuvenation and repair.

Procedure:

  1. Case selection with both the doctor and the patient.
  2. Setting realistic expectations is very important
  3. The area selected for fat extraction is injected with local anaesthesia
  4. The excess oil and blood from this extract is removed by blotting
  5. It is then mixed with growth factors, which are embedded in beads of hyaluronic acid, which allows for prolonged and constant release of growth factors
  6. After thorough mixing, this is then injected into specific areas on the face in multiple planes – usually three, from the innermost to the outermost layers of the skin
  7. The growth factors used for each of these layers also could differ. The second layer could have more of protein (collagen) as it helps in keeping the skin firm.
  8. The topmost layer could have more of blood cells as it is involved in vascular supply
  9. After this, a final resurfacing is done to ensure the fine lines and superficial skin damage is repaired
  10. The face may also be sculpted in specific areas to correct additional features, like the jawline
  11. Fat deposit correction (some addition, some removal) may also be done.

Advantages:

  1. No surgical incision required, only needle incisions to extract and infuse fat cells
  2. Faster healing
  3. Done as outpatient procedure
  4. No hospitalization
  5. No anaesthetic required
  6. No scar, as the fat is used from lesser visible areas like inner thighs
  7. Quicker and remarkable results
  8. Complete facial rejuvenation
  9. Can be done from patient’s own blood or from a donor

Hymen Reconstruction - Know Its Benefits!

Are you aware of the procedure called hymenorrhaphy and the benefits that are associated with it? It is a surgical procedure that aims at repairing the hymen by stitching it back. It is referred to as hymen reconstruction, but is not a part of conventional gynecological care. It is considered to be more of a form of plastic surgery. Women undergoing this procedure do it so that the hymen bleeds after it is broken during sexual intercourse.

Procedure

  1. Hymenorrhaphy is a non invasive procedure which is performed under local anesthesia, along with sedation.
  2. Sometimes, general anesthesia may also be required depending on the patient’s condition.
  3. The surgery starts with the excision of the torn hymen edges.
  4. Commonly, a hymen reconstruction is performed following three ways.
  5. Sewing of the torn skin, which makes up the hymen’s secondary layer, making the hymen look intact.
  6. The placement of an artificial membrane without any blood supply that acts as an artificial hymen. A gelatin capsule containing a substance resembling blood is placed here.
  7. The placement of a flap taken from the vaginal lining for creating a hymen that is fully functional, along with blood supply. This acts as a restored hymen.
  8. Patients undergoing the second form of hymenorrhaphy should avoid having sexual intercourse for three months after the procedure.
  9. Dissolvable sutures are used during the procedure so that the patient does not have to visit a clinic to get them removed.

Results and benefits
The hymen, referred to as the virgin’s veil, breaks during sexual intercourse. It can also break or lacerate because of other factors like physical exercise, sports injuries, diseases, tampon use, or masturbation.

  1. The most common benefits or the reasons why women undergo a hymenorrhaphy are as follows:
  2. For serving as a sign of virginity before an intended marriage, which is needed in several cultures.
  3. For help with healing in women who have suffered sexual assault of some form. The procedure provides emotional and psychological relief to the affected woman.
  4. For repairing a hymen that is torn because of some kind of injury.
  5. Women considering undergoing a hymenorrhaphy for restoring their virginity should keep in mind the recovery period that follows the procedure. It is advised to women to undergo the procedure within a period of three months before getting married.

Silicone Cheek Implants - For A Fuller Looking Face!

Silicone Cheek Implants - For A Fuller Looking Face!

Today is you don’t like something about the structure of your face, it is possible to change it with cosmetic surgery. People who have long, narrow faces or those who have undergone a traumatic accident which disfigured their face can opt for cheek implants to give their face a fuller, more symmetric appearance. Some people may also choose to have cheek implants if they feel their cheeks are too flat.

Cheek implants are of two types. The doctor may either transfer fat from one part of your body to your cheeks or use synthetic materials such as polyethene or silicon. The procedure may be performed under local or general anaesthesia and usually takes about 45 minutes. The surgeon will first make an incision in either your upper lip or lower eyelid. A pocket is then formed into which the implant is inserted. Stitches and metal screws may also be used to help the muscles support the implant. Finally, the incision is closed with stitches. In case, the cheek implant is part of a larger procedure such as a facelift or forehead lift, the implants may be inserted through incisions made for these procedures.

After the procedure, you will experience temporary bruising and swelling for a few days. You may also have mild discomfort or pain and feel as though your cheeks are numb. A liquid diet is usually advised for the first 2-3 days after the surgery to allow the cheek muscles to heal. You should be able to resume your normal lifestyle within a week but it may take more than a month for the swelling to subside completely and the results of the surgery to become noticeable.

As with any other surgical procedure, cheek implants also have their own risks. Some potential complications of the surgery include bleeding and infection, changes in sensation levels, damage to the bone and ligaments, scarring, allergic reactions and accumulation of blood under the skin.

The effects of a silicone cheek implant are permanent and will last a lifetime. However, in rare cases of complications, the implant may get infected and need to be removed. The contours of the face may also change is the implant shifts from its position. In rare cases, an accident may also cause the implant to extrude out of the face. Hence, it is important to maintain a relationship with your cosmetic surgeon and maintain all appointments for follow-up checks.

Liposuction - How It Is Done?

MCh - Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, MBBS, MS - General Surgery, Fellowship Reconstructive Microsurgery

Liposuction - How It Is Done?

Laser liposuction is the process of removal of excessive fatty tissue from the body through the use of laser light. This can be done both as treatment and cosmetic procedures.

Liposuction is gaining popularity because of the following reasons

  1. With changing food habits, more and more processed foods have found their way onto our plates. All this has led to increased fat in the diet and increased the incidence of obesity. The age of onset of obesity is also reduced drastically.
  2. This problem is compounded by reduced physical activity, promoting further fat accumulation.
  3. Added to this is another dimension where ‘thin is in.’ So there is a change in the definition of ‘fat’ and people want to look thin and sculpted

How it is done?

  1. The first step is to identify if the person is a candidate for this procedure
  2. Laser lipo can be done in cases of moderate to severe obesity and in people with skin laxity
  3. The abdomen, thighs, male breasts, back, and arms are all feasible areas for liposuction
  4. The patient and surgeon should have realistic expectations in terms of results, risks, complications, and post-op process.
  5. The procedure is done under local anaesthesia or general anaesthesia depending on the extent of the surgery (area and amount of fat)
  6. Areas of operation are pre-marked and intensive laser light is directed at this area
  7. The laser is used in different layers of the skin with different intent
  8. In the deeper layers of the skin, the laser is directed at fat cell walls which are broken, and the fatty oils leak out, and these disrupted cells are then removed
  9. The amount of fat to be removed is already determined prior to the procedure
  10. The oil and disrupted cells are removed producing a better contour
  11. The next superficial layers of the skin contain blood vessels, which are also coagulated by the laser. This reduces the blood loss during the procedure and less bruising after the procedure
  12. When the laser is used on the more superficial layers, the heat causes the skin to produce more collagen and elastin, which are the essential skin proteins. This promotes healing and improves the skin quality after the laser lipo is done.

Alternately, in some people, only the deeper layers are acted upon and the superficial layers are left untouched. The released oils and fat fragments are allowed to be absorbed by the body. This is more useful in areas where the skin is extremely thin, like the face over head and neck areas. It may also be used where only skin tightening without too much fat removal is required.

Understanding About FUE & FUT Technique!

Understanding About FUE & FUT Technique!

Hair loss is one of the major cosmetic concerns, and this could be due to multiple causes, including heredity, stress, environmental pollutants, thyroid disease, chemotherapy and vitamin deficiency. However, with advancements in surgical procedures, hair loss can be treated effectively with hair transplantation. With premature hair loss becoming extremely common, the number of women and men going for hair transplantation is constantly on the rise.

There are two main types of hair transplantation techniques i.e. follicular unit extraction and follicular unit transplantation abbreviated as FUE and FUT respectively. The hair has a root portion called the follicle, which is essential for hair growth. In both the hair transplant procedures, the follicles are replaced in the area of hair loss, allowing for regrowth of the hair. The results can vary depending on the type and quality of hair and other environmental and dietary factors.

FUE: This involves the extraction of the hair follicles from the back of the head (or other donor sites like chest or back) using a small circular instrument. Over the next few days, this is then harvested and then placed back into the recipient area. This gets ‘accepted’ in the new area and then new hair begins to grow after a few days. This entire procedure may need to be repeated until the desired results are achieved. There would be multiple, tiny, non-pigmented dots in the donor site, which may not be a significant cosmetic concern. FUE is often indicated in younger people who have shorter hair styles and have not previous hair transplants without very good results.

FUT: Also known as follicular unit strip surgery, this involves removing areas of the scalp which have dense hair growth. A thin layer of the scalp of about 6 to 10 inches is removed and the scalp closed. This is then divided into multiple graft strips which are then transplanted into the recipient area. The surgeon creates holes through needles or a scalpel and then plants the grafts. Another sitting might be required to increase the density of the hair. This is a simple procedure where the hair from one part of the scalp is removed and transferred to the area where there is no hair. FUT is preferred by people who prefer a better quality of hair and slightly longer hair. In both cases, it is always advisable to talk to your doctor about what to expect and have realistic expectations about the results to expect.

Response to the treatment can widely vary across people, and some may require more than one sitting if the desired results are not achieved. Seeing hair grow not just improves appearance but also improves self-image and confidence for a person.
