When I watch something in bright light and then come back to dim light I use to see some dark spots before me. Is there any problem related to my eyes?

DHMS (Diploma in Homeopathic Medicine and Surgery)
Homeopath, Ludhiana
It is a normal Phenomenon and nothing too serious regarding your eyess. This is very similar to the effect that you get when you're standing there at a party and someone takes a photo, and you get those spots in front of your eyes from the flashes and you just can't see anything. It’s because of something called photo-bleaching and it happens to the cells in your retina which is the light sensitive bit at the back of your eye. It’s populated with cells called rods and cones, and these are full of light sensitive pigments. Normally, in a normal situation, you get light as particles called photons coming into your eye, these stimulate the cells by changing this light sensitive pigment, which is called retinal, into a slightly different form and they stimulate the cells to send electrical impulses to your brain. But if you get a really bright light like a flash or if you look at the sun for a long time or even just a really bright light bulb, this sends the cells into overdrive and they get really overexcited, and it takes them a little while to calm down. So then when you look at a normal level of light, like a wall,or in a dark area you get these kind of black spots where you've been looking at light where the cells have been over stimulated. So, you have lost the photo pigment in that particular area temporarily because it’s been broken down by the photons of light hitting it, and when it regenerates, it comes back then you see normal again, but while it’s regenerating up the pigment because of the overexposure, you see a less intense spot, so you therefore see a dark spot. It’s worth noting actually that the retina is less active when light shines on it than in the dark. It’s in fact deactivated by light rather than activated by light.

Sir, My eye sight is right but now i work too much on computer so please suggest good eye drop ?

MBBS, MS - Ophthalmology
Ophthalmologist, Delhi
One should not use eye drops unnecessarily in normal eyes But should take precautions to prevent problems due to continuous use of computer. You should probably decrease your stair time on computer by moving your eyes in between your work at an interval of 20 - 30 minutes and wash your eyes frequently. This will help you reducing your strain and preventing your eyes from dryness.

My eye is aching from previous five days and water comes out continually m very afraid for that its very major problem for me suggest me the best way to come over it.

FPRS, DNB Ophtalmology

Dear lybrate user, could be because of many reasons but commonly it is due to allergy or infection. You need to visit eye specialist to differentiate between the two as the treatment is different. Also get your eyes checked for any glass power.

Night blindness (also called nyctalopia) is the inability to see well at night or in poor light. It is not a disease, but rather a symptom of an underlying disorder or problem, especially untreated nearsightedness. Consult eye specialist.

Sir as you are in your growing phase of life so you are bound to have increase of power. Don't worry about it too much. Once your power stabilises then you can get glass removal surgery done. In the mean time you can follow certain things like:- go for regular eye check ups have balanced diet rich in vegetables and fruits have plenty of fluids read in adequate light don't rub your eyes.

I am having problem in my eyes, both of my eyes shed tears if I'm doing work on computer although there is no vision problem, do I need to worry.

DHMS (Diploma in Homeopathic Medicine and Surgery)
Homeopath, Ludhiana
The solution for this problem is its reduced usage and while using computor use in proper light. There is nothing more effective than controlling usage to reduce and negate the effects. You can also reduce the intensity of the computor screen by attaching a filter or by getting an eye-friendly screen. Above all, one must try to reduce the amount of computor usage or take frequent breaks otherwise it can cause some harmful effect on your eyes.---------------------- Homoeopathic medicine CINELUBE EYE DROPS ( HAPDCO) Pour 2 drops 3 times daily.

My eyes are so much stressed because of using Mobiles and laptop sir. So is there any other alternative to reduce my eye pain or any medicine.

DHMS (Diploma in Homeopathic Medicine and Surgery)
Homeopath, Ludhiana
Mobile screen is made up of hundreds of tiny pixels that are constantly moving. Our eyes in turn are not naturally able to set focus on these constantly moving pixels, and hence we try to focus on an area behind the actual screen. Therefore, in order to work on a mobile, our eyes need to keep on fluctuating focus between their natural point of focus and the pixels on the screen. And this tires the eyes and causes a lot of wear and tear. As a result, we suffer from irritation, which may range from a number of things like headaches, dry eyes, blurred vision, problems in focusing and faulty color perception, to something as severe as glaucoma. The electromagnetic waves that are emitted by a mobile phone can be extremely damaging to the eyes. It has been studied and well documented that these cell phone waves can have a damaging effect on the various parts of the eye, including the retina and the cornea. Moreover, they can cause cataract too. Moreover it is more distressing for our eyes to view contents on a tiny screen which requires even more concentration and extenive usage of eyes without blinking thus causing Eye dryness making them vulnerable to frequent Eye problemss.. The solution for this problem Is its reduced usage and while using mobiles/Laptop use them in proper light. There is nothing more effective than controlling usage to reduce and negate the effects. You can also reduce the intensity of the mobile’s/Computer screen by attaching a filter or by getting an eye-friendly screen. Above all, one must try to reduce the amount of mobile usage or take frequent breaks. ------------- Homoeopathic medicine CINELUBE EYE DROPS (HAPDCO) Pour 2 drops 3 times daily.

I have red eyes from three weeks it also itching and irritating what should I do.

DHMS (Diploma in Homeopathic Medicine and Surgery)
Homeopath, Ludhiana
Eyes appear red because the vessels at the surface of the white portion of the eye (sclera) become swollen. Vessels may swell due to: • Eye dryness • Too much sun exposure • Dust or other particles in the eye • Allergies • Infection • Injury Eye infections or inflammation can cause redness as well as possible itching, discharge, pain, or vision problems. These may be due to: • Blepharitis: Swelling along the edge of the eyelid. • Conjunctivitis: Swelling or infection of the clear tissue that lines the eyelids and covers the surface of the eye (the conjunctiva). This is often referred to as "pink eye." • Corneal ulcers: Sores on the cornea most often caused by a serious bacterial or viral infection. • Uveitis: Inflammation of the uvea, which includes the iris, ciliary body, and choroid. The cause is most often not known. It may be related to an autoimmune disorder, infection, or exposure to toxins. The type of uveitis that causes the worst red eye is called iritis, in which only the iris is inflamed. Other potential causes of eye redness include: • Colds or allergies . • Acute glaucoma: A sudden increase in eye pressure that is extremely painful and causes serious visual problems. This is a medical emergency. The more common form of glaucoma is chronic and gradual. • Corneal scratches: Injuries caused by sand, dust, or overuse of contact lenses. Sometimes, a bright red spot, called a subconjunctival hemorrhage, will appear on the white of the eye. This often happens after straining or coughing, which causes a broken blood vessel on the surface of the eye. Most often, there is no pain and your vision is normal. It is almost never a serious problem. Because the blood leaks into the conjunctiva, which is clear, you cannot wipe or rinse the blood away. Like a bruise, the red spot will go away within a week or two. So,visit a local eyespecialist. The diagnosis of your problem in eyes can only be made by local examination of eyes

Types and Causes of Cataract

Super-Speciality Trained Ophthalmologists
Ophthalmologist, Delhi
Types and Causes of Cataract

One of the most common ailments that affect elders the most is cataract. Cataract develops gradually and can occur in one or both eyes and if not treated in time can cause blindness. Most cataracts are not visible to the naked eye, but in some cases, a dense cataract can make the pupil appear white. A cataract can be defined as a dense, cloudy build up of protein masses on the eye lens. This obstructs the light falling on the retina and does not allow the retina to form a clear image.

Advancing in age is one of the most common causes of cataracts. Along with this, there are several other factors that play a role in the development of cataracts as well. These include smoking, exposure to ultraviolet radiation, long term use of steroids, trauma, radiation therapy and diabetes. Anything that triggers an overproduction of chemically altered oxygen molecules in the body can increase your risk of suffering from this condition. Hypertension and a family history of cataracts can also put you at a higher risk of developing cataracts. Poor nutrition or a diet that is deficient in antioxidants can also put you at a high risk of suffering from this condition.

Cataracts can be categorized on the basis of where and how they develop in the eye. This categorization is based on location:

  1. Nuclear Cataract: These develop in the middle of the lens and turn the center of the eye yellow. Nuclear cataracts are typically associated with aging.
  2. Cortical cataract: These develop around the edges of the nucleus and are wedge shaped. Gradually, spokes emitted from these wedges work themselves towards the center of the eye.
  3. Posterior capsular cataract: These are among the faster growing cataracts and develop at the back of the lens. They are also known as subcapsular cataracts. Cataracts triggered by diabetes or the prolonged use of steroids usually fall in this category.

Categorization based on how they develop:

  • Congenital cataract: These are present at birth or develop within the first year of a baby's life. Congenital cataracts are rare.
  • Secondary cataract: These are triggered as a side effect of medications or diseases like glaucoma and diabetes. Prolonged use of steroids like prednisone can also lead to the development of such cataracts.
  • Traumatic cataract: Cataract  that is developed as a result of an injury to the eye is known as traumatic cataracts. They have a very slow rate of development.
  • Radiation cataract: It develops as a side effect of radiation therapy used to treat cancer.
