Dear Lybrate user, Broken and stuck tooth fragments are indeed a serious problem. Your broken tooth part needs to be removed and the tooth that remains embedded in the gums should be saved if possible. All About Dry Mouth

Dentist, Gurgaon
All About Dry Mouth

Dry mouth or Xerostomia is characterized by the drying of the mouth as a result of reduced saliva secretion. Secretion of an adequate amount of saliva helps in chewing & swallowing of food which in turn creates a healthy oral cavity. A recent study showed that women have more chances of getting a dry mouth as compared to men. If not diagnosed on time, dry mouth might lead to mouth infections, severe damage to the teeth enamel and gingivitis.

The symptoms of dry mouth include, but are not limited to:

  • Craving for water in regular intervals.
  • Swollen tongue.
  • Dry eye.
  • Significant trouble while swallowing, speaking or chewing along with disturbing bad breath.
  • Severe headaches and formations of ulcers in the mouth

Causes:
1. This condition might occur as a side effect of:
a. Other serious conditions such as GERD, Alzheimer's disease, HIV/AIDS etc.
b. Side effects of medical treatments such as chemotherapy and radiation therapy; this might result in significant damage to the salivary glands.
c. Side effects of drugs prescribed for diarrhea, nausea, asthma, obesity, depression, Parkinson's disease etc.

2. Abnormal consumption of marijuana, crystal methamphetamine and tobacco might cause dry mouth.

3. It can occur during pregnancy and breastfeeding, dry mouth can be a common occurrence because of acute dehydration.

4. Sleep apnea, snoring and breathing through your mouth instead of the nose on a daily basis might induce dry mouth.

5. Severe damage to the nerves might result in dry mouth conditions.

Treatment:

  1. A healthy amount of water consumption, about 3 liters every day, will help to keep the mouth wet.
  2. Application of toothpaste and mouthwashes containing fluoride twice a day will help to keep the mouth moist.
  3. You should change the dosages of medicines after consulting your doctor if Xerostomia is primarily occurring as a result of side effect of the drugs.
  4. Prescribed dosage of medicines such as "Pilocarpine" might induce increased saliva secretion.
  5. Try breathing through the nose instead of your mouth to avoid Xerostomia.

Tooth Whitening - What You Should Know About it

Tooth Whitening - What You Should Know About it

A smile is said to be a person’s best accessory. No matter what the colour of your teeth may be when you were born, exposure to various things including tea, coffee, berries, wine etc can stain your teeth and mar their beauty. Thankfully this discoloration can be fixed by whitening your teeth. Here are a few things to know before you decide to whiten your teeth.

  1. Cleaning and whitening are not the same: Cleaning refers to the removal of plaque and tartar from the surface of the teeth while whitening is a chemical procedure that brightens the enamel.
  2. Not all teeth whiteners are the same: Most teeth whiteners have a hydrogen peroxide base, though they all act in the same way by releasing oxygen that reacts with strainers and removes them, they vary in terms of the strength of the hydrogen peroxide.
  3. Whitening can be slow or quick: Teeth whitening can be done in a dentist’s office or at home. In a dentist’s office, this procedure can take an hour while teeth whitening at home can take a few weeks. However, home treatments are usually much more budget friendly than getting your teeth whitened at the dentist’s office.
  4. Teeth whitening is not permanent: The effect of bleaching your teeth to whiten them can last from a year to three years. You will need regular touch ups to maintain the sparkle. You should also reduce your intake of food like wine and coffee that can stain your teeth. Regular brushing and flossing will also help maintain the look for longer. On the other hand, keep in mind that excessive teeth whitening can permanently damage teeth.
  5. Not everyone can get their teeth professionally whitened: This form of treatment is not suitable for children, adolescents, pregnant women and lactating women or people who are allergic to peroxides. This procedure can also not be performed on teeth that have cavities, exposed roots, bonded fillings, veneers, crowns incomplete dental work or on patients who suffer from gum disease and hypersensitivity. Bleaching may also not work in cases where discolouration is a result of prolonged administration of certain antibiotics or excessive fluoride intake during childhood
  6. There may be side effects: Sensitivity is one of the most common side effects of teeth whitening. This can vary from person to person and can be relieved with pain relievers. Sensitivity can also lead to gum recession. Other common side effects of this treatment include irritation of sift tissue and nausea or vomiting. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a Dentist.

How to give up chewing tobacco and pan masala. My friend was addicted and the dentist prescribed some chewing gum (not the ones available in any drugstore like nulife). The candy was blue filled in jelly like and each cost around Rs43. Accidentally I forgot the name and lost contact of her as well. She gave up everything after ten days. She was asked to chew just two gums per day. Could you please help me if you could suggest me the name of that particular gum. Thank you.

There is no quick fix or standard method of quitting smoking. However, there are several effective methods and treatments; it is up to each individual to find the one that suits them best. The "no-smoking contract" set a quit date. If it seems easier to you, you can set a quitting 'period' instead. The smoker's diary: many smokers have told us that writing a journal opened their eyes to a habit (smoking) that they thought they knew. Become a forum user and support and encourage each other. Get busy with friend who loves you and does not smoke. NICOTINE CHEWING GUM How to use nicotine gum You can take it throughout the day, or only when you are tormented by the urge to smoke. Because of its flexibility, it is especially indicated for irregular smokers. Take at least 10 pieces per day. If you feel the urge to smoke, use more gum or use either a patch or a nicotine inhaler at the same time. If you smoke fewer than 20 cigarettes per day, you can save money, cut a 4 mg chewing in 2 and use 1/2 piece at a time. Duration of treatment: From 8 weeks to 3 months. Important: For the best results, follow these chewing instructions: Slowly chew the gum: the taste appears After about 10 chews, take a pause by wedging the gum between the cheek and gum Wait until the taste is attenuated Again slowly chew the gum (gum = 30 minutes) Tips from smoking cessation specialist doctors Avoid drinking coffee or fruit juice (acid) before and while using the gum, as these drinks reduce its effectiveness. Chewing the gum too quickly releases too much nicotine, a tangy taste, a decrease in the effectiveness of the gum, hiccups, or stomach ache. Do not stop treatment prematurely as this will decrease your chances of success.

Which paste shall I use to remove the yellow colour on my teeth? Present I use the colgate.

MDS - Orthodontics, BDS
Dentist,
Which paste shall I use to remove the yellow colour on my teeth? Present I use the colgate.
The colour of your teeth is an optical phenomenon. It depends on the thickness of the enamel. The inner layer of the tooth is called dentin, which is yellow in colour. If the overlying enamel is thin the colour of dentin is visible through the enamel giving the tooth yellow colour. I the enamel is thick the underlying dentin is not visible so tooth appears white. The whiteness of tooth depends on the thickness of enamel. Genetic also plays a role. Usually a fair complexioned person will have yellow shade and a dark complexioned person will have white shade. Kindly consult a dentist he may restore the top yellow layer with lighter shade veneers or composite resins. If the teeth have become yellow recently it can be due to plaque attached over the teeth, a cleaning would be fine. Paste usually contains abrasives which gives polishing to the tooth, it cant change the colour.

This could b either due to sensitivity due to loss of enamel surface or due to decay of tooth. Tooth decay can b treated by filling of tooth or by rct n capping of the decay is deep. Sensitivity can b reduced by using desensitizing toothpaste such as senquelf or sensodyne toothpaste by rubbing some amount of toothpaste onto your tooth surface n wait till 5 mins before rinsing it off. Get your teeth evaluated by dentist to know the cause of your problem n get treated accordingly. Regsrds.

Hi,
I have slight to medium cavities in my molar teeth, is there a solution to stop those cavities from spreading fur...
Once the decay starts, you will have to get it removed by drilling n the cavity filled with appropriate material. This will prevent further decay progress n will make teeth life longer. For prevention of caries in other teeth, Brush twice daily n use a mouthwash. Avoid eating sticky n sugary food, aerated drinks. Gargle forcefully with water after you eat or drink anything. Visit your dentist every six months.

White spots on the tongue or in the mouth can be an advanced symptom of a serious medical condition or my imply something not serious. When you experience this symptoms of white spots, it is a best idea you visit your doctor. Apart from sexual transmitted diseases (chlamydia, gonorrhea, HIV, or AIDs ), there are a number of causes that can cause white spots around your mouth. These may include: Excessive dry mouth If your mouths stay dry for long periods, there are possibilities you will develop white spots or patches around your mouth or tongue. This is sometimes referred to as cotton mouth. Thrush this is a growth of yeast that has manifested itself in the mouth. These white spots can develop on the gums, cheeks, or the roof of the mouth or even the tongue. Migratory glossitis this is sometimes referred to as geographic tongue. It is a condition that presents itself as tiny, pinkish- white bumps [papillae], which are actually short, fine, hair- like projections.
