Take less of salt. Avoid pickles. Take more of fruits and salad. Go for brisk walk for at least 45 minutes/day. If still not controlled, you have to take medicines.

My mother has high blood pressure for years, more than 10 years and she has to take medicine[prescribed at the polyclinic] daily to control the pressure from increasing, thing is if she skip the medicine, the reading does goes up and sometimes she skip the medicine taking with intention as she strongly believe long period consumption of'western' medicine is detrimental to one's body organs. So she prefer non-medication method from hear-say basis, like consuming certain vegetables, is there truth in this non-medication approach? How do we manage hypertension? Is medication the only option? And is it true that with hypertension, getting work-up, angry, excited must be avoided at all means because this will lead to heart attack?

Does she wear spects for weak eye sight. Tv programmes claim to'cure' eyesight! does it ever happen? eye power keep fluctuating with age and in growing up kids, may be gets corrected but not in seniors. Tell her medicines for high bp, besides lowering the bp, also protect the heart. Vegetables and fruits are good but cannot lower bp once it has been recorded on a higher level - 120/80 is safe, 130/85 is borderline-no medicines, just reduce the salt, above 130/85 some safe medicines like beta blockers are given to reduce the risk of heart attack & stroke. Yes she has to keep her cool.

First, if your hdl is low, try to consume good fats from the diet like almonds and walnuts that are high in omega 3 fatty acids. Try to avoid processed foods and munch on fresh fruits and vegetables. Foods that are high in potassium are known to be helpful to bring down BP. Last but not the least engage in 30 minutes of relaxation exercise everyday to destress yourself.

Mind and body are interlinked, and psychological problems like high levels of stress, anxiety or tension badly effect our bodily functions. When we are in continue state of high levels of stress, our body demands and needs more energy to fight against it. Due to this, activation of white blood cells occur. However, for a longer duration if it occurs results in weakening of immune system and leading to problems like headache, diabetes etc. Engage yourself in some relaxation exercise like deep breathing on a regular basis like pranayam or yoga. Also, it is important to identify the stressors and work upon them. For this, you need to consult a doctor/psychologist who can help you in better management program.

Angioplasty is passing a wire through major blood vessel in groin or through radial area- arm. Local injury to vessel can cause bleeding and infection. Rest for at least a week. There are no chances of sciatica as that is a nerve-muscle disease. Food for lifetime should be low in salt & sugar despite bp & sugar in blood being normal, no bad fats like street food, burgers etc. Lots of protein through toned milk, curds & protein supplements, good fats & good proteins through a katori of assorted nuts + 1 spoon of pure ghee/ butter. Lots of seasonal vegetables and fruits.

My wife aged 60 Yrs suffers from mental disorder of emotional outbursts. It seems she is also a patient of high BP, but no medicines are used for it so far. So far controlled only through diet control. Can U please suggest suitably?

My wife aged 60 Yrs suffers from mental disorder of emotional outbursts. It seems she is also a patient of high BP, ...
Dear lybrate user, since your wife is 60 years old, it is advisable to take her to a doctor and get all routine physical tests done. You need to know if all her body functions like thyroid, hormone levels etc are normal or not. Treating her bp with only diet control may also be harmful. Please take doctor's advise. If all her organs are functioning normally, then you may consult a counsellor. Because, then the emotional outbursts may be because of suppressed feelings like anger, sadness, shame, guilt etc. The counselling sessions will help her to relieve her of her stress and help her in modifying her reactions to different situations. This will help her in expressing her feelings in socially acceptable way.
