Respiratory allergies are aggravated during a change of season and it is rampant during Feb and march in and around Delhi/ NCR. Allergies are aggravated by gas, bloating and are accompanied by dry skin, dry throat, cough, sneezing and wheezing. When allergy strikes, phlegm (balgam) blocks the nose and sinuses. Allergy may or may not be accompanied by fever but body ache is for sure. Normally for this type of low-grade fever antibiotics are not required but these allergies are not self-limiting like the flu with which it can be confused. Stress is another factor that aggravates the allergic effects. Ginger helps, so does honey and black pepper and cinnamon but on top of the list is steam to inhale, steam is antiseptic too, remember your doctor sterilizing instruments by autoclave which is based on the formula of a pressure cooker-lots of a stem is generated and everything (except plastic) including clothes and drapes get sterilized. Take a handy covered vessel like the one used in beauty parlors, switch on while it is kept on your table and cover your face with a towel, deep breathe steam, you will feel the passages opening up and phlegm melting which you can spit out without an effort of a violent cough. Avoid heavy, processed, refined and processed foods. 2) triphla helps fight allergy too, its powder or tablets help to reduce inflammation anywhere in the body. 3) wear cotton or linen 4) meditation helps reduce stress 5) benefits of honey are known to everyone. Do not take honey with steaming hot beverages, take it with warm water only. 6) ginger- some people chew it raw, some mothers give a drop of its juice+ some honey to their toddlers, some people make a concoction by boiling it in water at low heat and consuming it like tea/ coffee with a little milk 7) fresh indoor plants minus dust on the leaves gives fresh oxygen and inhaling deeply fresh air does open up blocked respiratory passages. 8) eat less salt as it leads to water retention making a condition worse 9) Guduchi also helps 10) maintain hygiene, do not skip daily bath with warm water. 11) if entire family including small kids want to inhale the steam for some time, make use of the smallest room in the house with doors closed, keep an electrical kettle, boiling for some time, entire room becomes steam room and breathe normally, passages of normal persons will also become free of any allergy. 12) everyone is lazy if asked to go to the kitchen to heat water but simple home remedies can help family and save money on extra medicines tests which are not required in simple seasonal allergies.

As much as digestive system constitution of the body allows! India is a country of all seasons. We are not living in a cold country like UK, where we had to drive for miles to buy farm fresh radish and strawberries though supermarkets had every variety. We need not spend a lot of money also. Just make use of the season and availability and eat accordingly. Make a rule of 5 colors- to eat 1 color fruit and vegetable each everyday, cooked or raw. Winter is good for citrus variety, there are lots of kinoos and oranges, take radish, carrots, banana, apple-this completes 5, and we can add more like tomatoes and cucumbers without any harm to the body. During summers, we get lots of varieties of mangoes all over the country. Replace or add citrus fruits with mangoes. During summers we get watermelon, melons besides different varieties of cucumbers, ladies fingers, lauki, tinda and lemon juice with honey is available throughout the year, even diabetics are suggested to take half a spoon of honey in place of some other sugar.

What is scalp? it is area of head where hairline starts from the face in front and hairline ends at neck covering entire head. The skin of face and of scalp is almost same, so is the expoture to environment pollution.

How many times we wash our face? morning, evenings during all weathers-yes! why neglect the scalp by washing it only once or twice a week? if face sweats during sweltering heat of june at 44 degrees plus, so does the scalp.

During winters at 2-4 degrees we may skip a daily bath because there has been no sweating anywhere on the body and our aim is to preserve heat of the body. Do not make any rules of washing hairs on particular days all through the year.

Follow the weather report of the day and give as much importance to scalp as you give to your face. Wash it daily during hot summers and skip a day or two during cold winters. Do not let sweat + impurities+ hair oils keep piling up on top of your head. Keep it clean like rest of the body!

    - A soup made with ginger garlic reduces inflammation swelling any where in the body including the respiratory passages.
    - The hydration provided by soup helps the body improve circulation and prevents the build up of phlegm. If haldi, onion, spinach turnip are added, the soup has a therpeutic effect on regeneration of cells.

A word of caution for cardiac patients who are taking aspirin as a blood thinner, all of the above also lead to thinning of blood, compounding the effects of other blood thinners used as drugs. In women it can lead to excessive periods, specially in women around menopause time, because of silent hypertension not detected and blood vessels becoming more fragile. Excess of everything is bad.

Definately not chips or popcorns made with fats. Popcorns are healthy if made with the help of heated sand sold by the vendor in market and not bought from the mall. Nuts are the best option but not more than one katori. 7 soaked peeled almonds, wallnuts, cashew, peanuts. We can compare the cost of this precious food vs. Packets of namkeens / samosas/ chips which give us nothing except bad cholesterol. Nuts are rich in good cholesterol, beat hunger pangs, make us feel full, effect on hunger lasts longer and there is no extra thirst to drink more water, because there is no salt added as a preservative and there is no ghee oozing. Another choice is a bowl full of 5 types of seasonal fruits and vegetables of minimum 5 colors -carrots, radishes, oranges, apples, bananas, cucumber, tomato. We are extrmely lucky to have fruits and vegetables according to seasons and we do not have to drive miles to get them!

Gur (jaggery) is better than sugar, and fresh cane juice if mixed with lemon juice and ginger juice kills most of the germs, in case the roadside machine is carrying some germs.

Cane juice is cheap, full of vitamins and minerals and can be taken by all classes of people, by people of all age groups.

Go desi, say no to MNC packed cold drinks and say yes to make in India while getting nourishment of canes grown by our farmers.

Apple cider vinegar has no side effects. One spoon of it can be taken with a spoon of honey/juice in the mornings and during the day but do take care of rest of the calories taken all through the day.

We spend tons of money on fairness creams, anti wrinkle agents, anti pimples lotions but the look of the day is natural with minimum make up to show. I am sharing a formula of grand ma, passed on through generations, just look around, the homely women never seem to age and that includes our helpers too who have little funds and time to spend on beauty parlors or fancy creams. It is one of the home made lotion, simple and need 2 ingredients, can be kept in fridge for a week. Take 1 tea spoon of fresh lemon juice and mix it with equal amount of honey, spread it on face and hands, just half an hour before bath, wash it with any soap. Apply bare little make up. Lemon juice is a natural bleach and honey is moisturiser, the amount is equal for a normal skin, but for dry skin type, add a little more honey and for oily skin a little more of lemon juice. One can make lotion for a week or make it fresh daily while sipping that morning elixir of honey + lemon juice on an empty stomach. The rind of used lemon if put in bucket of bath water, makes excellent flavored bath that is a bit anti septic also!
