While working in the fitting shop some iron dust entered into my left eye. after 2 days eye become red and its still a bit red after 7 days. What should I do?

FVRS, DNB Ophthalmology, MS Ophthalmology, MBBS, FICO
Ophthalmologist, Chennai
Maybe a particle of the iron dust is still in the eye. Do not delay an eye test.Infection can set in if the particle is not removed.

Please get your eyes tested. Either the power is changing or you have a more serious issue. Either way a complete checkup is needed

Diabetic Retinopathy

Diabetic retinopathy is an eye problem that can be caused by either type 1 or type 2 Diabetes Mellitus. Retinopathy occurs when diabetes damages the tiny blood vessels in the retina. The weakened blood vessels may leak fluid and blood.

Who are at risk for developing diabetic retinopathy?

Those with poorly controlled blood sugar levels are at a high risk of developing diabetic retinopathy. In addition, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, anemia, kidney disease and pregnancy can all place a patient at greater risk of suffering from diabetic eye disease.

How frequently should I get my eye examined?

If you have diabetes, you should get a yearly examination by your ophthalmologist. Once you develop diabetic retinopathy, your ophthalmologist may advise further investigations or treatment. A periodic follow up as advised by your ophthalmologist is mandatory. The frequency of these follow up visits is decided based on the severity of the disease.

What are the symptoms of diabetic retinopathy?

There may be no symptoms in the early stages, especially when the central portion of the retina is not involved. As the retinopathy progresses, you may have:

- Blurred vision.
- Floaters, which can look like black spots, little threads, or cobwebs.
- Bleeding in the eye causing sudden loss of vision.
- Temporary or permanent loss of vision.
- Pain is not a common feature of the disease.

Can i use the same prescription for the contact lens which i use for my spec? i have -3,180d power for both eye(prescribed for spec)

FVRS, DNB Ophthalmology, MS Ophthalmology, MBBS, FICO
Ophthalmologist, Chennai
The contact lens power for those with minus power is usually slightly less than the spectacle power. For small powers ( eg -1 or -2) the power may be the same. It is better to have a trial lens fitting and verify contact lens power before ordering

What causes watery eyes? Is it necessary to have the eyes operated to get over the problem resolved or can one put eye drops to over come the same. In case yes, then which eye drops?

FVRS, DNB Ophthalmology, MS Ophthalmology, MBBS, FICO
Ophthalmologist, Chennai
Watery eyes with discharge might be due to two reasons. The first might be a blockage of the nasolacrimal duct ( the tube that connects the eye with the nose) . In such a case , if antibiotic drops do not resolve the blockage a surgery might be required to overcome the block. The second cause of watery itchy eyes might be dryness of the eyes which cause reflex secretion of tears. This can be treated by lubricant eye drops

I have -2 vision. Can it be cured permanently? What will be the cost. Any natural solutions?

FVRS, DNB Ophthalmology, MS Ophthalmology, MBBS, FICO

A permanent cure is by laser procedure called LASIK. It usually costs about 20-30 thousand per eye depending on the technology and machine used.

Doctor, i got my cataract removal surgery on 4th dec, for 7 to 10 days my vision was normal , then i feel some thing floating in my eyes & vision get blurred & it will correct automatically, please advise what is the problem ?

FVRS, DNB Ophthalmology, MS Ophthalmology, MBBS, FICO
Ophthalmologist, Chennai
What you have are floaters which is a symptom of vitreous degeneration. As long as it is only a single floater or a couple of floaters you can ignore this. But it is better to have a detailed retinal evaluation to rule out any retinal breaks or holes.
