I think the real issue is bottlefeeding. YOU stop bottle feed and give mild from a sipper or with spoon.

Suggest me good liquid for cleansing of my babies feeding bottle ? Can we clean with normal soaps and liquids.
The best advise is not to bottle feed infants and give breast milk and feed from cup. If you must, you can use soap for cleaning.

Total sleep required by a 2 year old is around 10-12 hrs in a day. Try to divide it in day nap and night sleep so that she eats morning meal too.

DNB(Respireatory diseases), M.D

Pulmonary Function Tests
Pulmonary function tests (PFT’s) are breathing
tests to find out how well you move air in and
out of your lungs

Lung function tests can be used to:
■ Compare your lung function with known
standards that show how well your lungs should
be working.
■ Measure the effect of chronic diseases like
asthma, chronic obstructive lung disease
(COPD), or cystic fibrosis on lung function.
■ Identify early changes in lung function that
might show a need for a change in treatment.
■ Detect narrowing in the airways.
■ Decide if a medicine (such as a bronchodilator)
could be helpful to use.
■ Show whether exposure to substances in your
home or workplace have harmed your lungs.
■ Determine your ability to tolerate surgery and
medical procedures

What is spirometry?
Spirometry is one of the most commonly ordered
lung function tests. The spirometer measures
how much air you can breathe into your lungs
and how much air you can quickly blow out of
your lungs. This test is done by having you take
in a deep breath and then, as fast as you can,
blow out all of the air. You will be blowing into a
tube connected to a machine (spirometer).
The spirometry test is often repeated after
giving you a breathing medicine (bronchodilator)
to find out how much better you might breathe
with this type of medicine. You will be asked
to repeat this test two or three times to get an
accurate measure of your lung function. It can
take practice to be able to do spirometry well.
The staff person will work with you to learn how
to do the test correctly.
It usually takes 30 minutes to complete this test

What should I know before taking
this test?
■ You may be asked not to take your breathing
medicines before this test.
■ Instructions will be given on how to do this
test. If you do not understand them, ask the
technician to repeat them.
■ It takes effort to do this test and you may
become tired. This is expected.
■ If you become light-headed or dizzy during
this test, immediately stop blowing and let the
technician know

All About Necrotizing Enterocolitis

All About Necrotizing Enterocolitis

Necrotizing enterocolitis is a disease that causes inflammation of the tissues present in the intestines and results in damaged tissues. It initially affects the inner lining which ultimately results in thickening of the intestine. It may also lead to a hole in the abdomen resulting in bacteria entering the intestine, thus resulting in infection.

Symptoms:
The symptoms of Necrotizing enterocolitis are:

  1. You may experience symptoms of bloating in the abdomen
  2. The abdomen may be discolored
  3. You may experience diarrhea and vomiting
  4. You may not feel hungry
  5. There may be presence of blood in your stool
  6. You may have a fever and constantly feel lethargic

Causes: Lack of blood and oxygen in the intestine causes it to become weak and increases the chances of Necrotizing enterocolitis. It may result if oxygen levels drop during a difficult delivery. If the intestines are weak, then they are at a higher risk of getting infected by bacteria. If you have an excessive supply of blood cells in your body or other stomach condition, then it may lead to this disease.

Diagnosis: Usually the doctor conducts a physical exam to detect the symptoms of this disease. If babies are born with this condition, then they may suffer from weak immune system and problems in blood circulation. The doctor may also recommend x-rays to get detailed images of the intestine in order to probe for symptoms of inflammation and damage.

Treatment:
The treatment of the disease depends on few factors such as:

  1. The child's age
  2. How far has the disease progressed?
  3. Health of your child

It is recommended to stop breastfeeding. Feed the baby through intravenous methods. The doctor may also recommend antibiotics and oxygen support if the child has breathing problems. In severe cases, the child may require surgery to treat this disease.

If the treatment occurs early, then the child may recover. However, complications such as a narrow and damaged bowel may persist. This may cause problems in nutrient absorption in the intestine leading to other disorders.

My son is of 51/2 months. From last 7 days, he had not done poop. Please suggest me what to do so that he can do poop?

M.D.( Pediatrics), DCH
Pediatrician,
It's not necessarily abnormal, unless accompanied by greenish vomiting and distention of abdomen. If child is playful and taking feeds normally, nothing to worry. You may try glycerin suppository.

My 3 week old baby falls asleep during feedings and just won't burp. I hold him upright for up to half an hour while patting her back pretty well. He is drinking both formula and breast milk (both from the bottle). At times he will burp twice and I lay her down, he gets uncomfortable and cries a little, I pick her up and he burps again. I have to do this every 5 to 10 minutes sometimes. Often he will demand more milk when he looks uncomfortable from what seems like gas as he does pass gas after squirming and crying some. Tell me what to do. ?

Small babies should be given only breast milk. They get uncomfortable due to gas, but feel good after burping or passing wind. If your child cries it doesn't mean he is demanding feed. Overfeeding usually causes the problems you are describing. Stop formula, and give only breast milk when the earlier feed you have given is likely to be digested. It usually takes 2 hours for that.

Breat feeding encouraged upto one year. After this we recommend table diet to babies. To promote breast milk secretion first think is you need to cosume high protein low fat nutritious food in plenty. Commercially available items are not must to promote secretions. More oten it is just for some psychological satisfaction tomothers. Tin. Versicl. Is not related to the products you use.

Mother might be having problem of retracted nipples which the baby can't hold in his mouth. So help of a senior lady can help this by doing massage of the nipples. Always try to give breast feed directly through sucking otherwise milk secretions will be reduced gradually. --you can use a blunt forcef to hold the nipple and put in mouth of baby. --baby's are very smart. After feeding with bottle (which require no effort) they will avoid breast sucking as it requires effort. --always avoid feeding with bottle.

My 3 year old is sick with a temperature of 100 degrees she can not keep anything down including liquids. What should I do?

MD-Pediatrics
Pediatrician, Bikaner
In children refusal to feed is considered as a warning sign. What are her other complaints besides fever. Try to bring down fever with paracetamol drops which will help reduce temperature and throat pain (which could be the reason for his refusal to eat). Secondly consult a pediatrician and start antibiotics if required.
