Thank you for the query. Uric acid is produced in our body by the metabolism of protein (purine to be specific). Increased uric acid may occur either due to increased production or decreased excretion. You may be a poor excretor. Usually, if patient is asymptomatic (for eg. No history of joint pain/gout), medications are not given. The normal uric acid level for men is preferably between 3.5-7 mg% (it may vary between laboratories). I would suggest you to continue with your dietary protein and alcohol restriction. Some medications like low dose aspirin or diuretics (frusemide) can cause raised uric acid levels. Get some blood tests like total wbc count, serum urea and creatinine done. There are some other causes of increased uric acid levels but I think you needn't worry about it right now. However, if gout is precipitated, you will need to continue the medications - febuxostat or allopurinol, after consulting your physician. Regards.

Mr. Lybrate-user, best method for increasing memory is to learn a technique of visualisation, where you visulise the page or paragraph that has been read or studied, that is create a mental picture in front of your closed eyes, and memorise it. There is a book written by one Mr. Silva - silva mind control techniques/ or methods. Search for it and follow. That should help. Caffeine increases alertness for a few minutes to an hour or two. But it is followed by a feeling of dullness. Repeated use is not advised. Thanks for the question.

How blood sugar can be controlled and when to use insulin?
When to take insulin in diabetes from being diagnosed as a new diabetic to many years later after it the question that haunts diabetics is whether I should take insulin now or in the future. If you are a type diabetic (in young people) you start with insulin right away but if you are diagnosed with late onset diabetes (above 35 years- exceptions apply) you delay it for as long as possible. The answer to this is simple. You continue on diet, exercise and tablets as long as you can maintain your sugar levels within normal and when in spite of this your blood sugar levels are uncontrolled (consistently above 200 mg/dl) and you are developing complications such as high blood sugar levels, infections (unresolving) or ketoacidosis etc. Obviously the trouble to take insulin is not more than being confined to an icu bed and hence you will need to start taking insulin once twice or even thrice a day.
