I am a 47 years old and have thyroid. I have bags under my eyes and also what looks like cholesterol deposits under my eye - is this a cholesterol issue , a derma issue or a endocrinology issue ? How do I deal with it.

MBBS, CCEBDM, Diploma in Diabetology
Endocrinologist, Hubli-Dharwad
Lybrate-user, by saying" I have thyroid" are you referring to hypothyroidism? if so then, in case of uncontrolled hypothyroidism there may be a swelling of the face and lower eyelids and legs and feet. If in good control then tsh values are between 3 to 4 milli units/l. As regards some deposits under the eye, cholesterol is not seen any where in the body like that. It can only be detected by measuring lipid levels of the blood. Your problem may be something else. You may talk to your local doctor and then decide whom to consult. Your bmi is 25 kgs/m2, which shows being over weight, so regular exercise and diet control are required. Thanks.

What is the difference between vatarakta and aamvat. I wants to try homoeopathic medicine for hyperuricemea (increased level of uric acid in blood. Usually level is between 6 and 7. Joints pain starts if level goes higher.

MBBS, MD - Internal Medicine

A high uric acid level can be caused when your body either produces too much uric acid or your kidneys don't eliminate uric acid rapidly enough. A high uric acid level may cause increasingly frequent attacks of gout, or it may never cause problems. A high uric acid level may also cause some people to develop kidney stones or kidney failure. And some people with a high uric acid level also develop high blood pressure, heart disease or chronic kidney disease, but it's often unclear whether this is a direct cause or merely an early warning sign of these conditions. Factors that may cause a high uric acid level in your blood include: Diuretic medications (water pills),Drinking too much alcohol,Genetics (inherited tendencies),hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid),Immune-suppressing drugs,Niacin, or vitamin B-3, obesity, psoriasis, Purine-rich diet — organ meat, game meat, anchovies, herring, gravy, dried beans, driedpeas, mushrooms and other foods Renal insufficiency — inability of the kidneys to filter waste Tumor lysis syndrome — a rapid release of cells into the blood caused by certain cancers or by chemotherapy for those cancers,Also, you may be monitored for high uric acid levels when undergoing chemotherapy or radiation treatment for cancer. Avoid protein diets, avoid more milk products. bad habits , fast food/fat/oily,salty foods. Coffee, smoking, alcohol intake. Non-veg., take whole grain, oats, green veg.,plenty of water in day time, 1 glass of water at night before bed. Take tab. Zyloric 100 mg once a day. Tab. Ulracet sos for pain in joints.

My ESR is 29. Uric acid is 7.4. I am having slight head ache from time to time from past 3 days. I had fever day before yesterday, but did not experience it after that. I feel uneasy with the head ache. My typhoid report according to the doctor is on the border line. There are enough pluses in the report to suggest that this might be typhoid. However, doctor wants to observe me for a weeks time. He wants to see if the fever goes away in this time or shots up. My Billirubin levels naturally remain between 1-2. I have been cured for T.B. 9 years back. I am allergic to sparfloxacin. My urine from the past 8 days is dark yellowish early in the morning. I have to travel abroad in a months time ad have to work on australian visa. They require medical examination to be done from their own accredited hospitals. I am not sure if I should wait for one week for other symptoms to show up. Please help. This situation was a week back. My doctor started me with Ofloxacin for any threat of typhoid. I have taken doses for 5 days now. My headache still remains on and off during the day. Urine colour still unusually shows yellow. I have to travel soon. Should I just neglect this headache and hope for it to get fine by pain killers or is it an indication of something else? What tests should I get done with?

General Physician,
What Is The Healthiest Way To Treat Hypoglycemia?

Blood sugar refers to the glucose present in our blood. This glucose is formed from the food we eat. It is carried through our bloodstream to different parts of the body mainly to provide energy. Measuring blood glucose is an essential measure of our health.
Hypoglycemia refers to low blood sugar. This is a condition when blood sugar concentrations fall below normal. Without enough glucose, our body will not be able to perform its normal functions. It can be a concern for people with diabetes taking certain blood sugar-lowering medications, but it can also affect people who don?t have diabetes.
An episode of hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) comes on very suddenly and you must be aware of how to tackle it effectively.
Causes of Hypoglycemia
Hypoglycemia is usually seen as a side effect of Diabetes treatment. Some common causes of Hypoglycemia include:
Overmedication with insulin or Anti diabetic pills
Drinking too much of alcohol
Missed meals. Hypoglycemia may occur in people with cancer who are on chemotherapy, which often causes loss of appetite
Genetic defects in the regulation of Insulin release
Liver failure ? ability of liver to generate new glucose gets impaired
Pituitary and adrenal gland disorders affect the production of glucose
Symptoms of Hypoglycemia
Hypoglycemia means that there is not enough glucose reaching our brain. With drop in blood sugar our brain gets impacted immediately and we start feeling weak and fatigued. There is also a blurred/ impaired vision. Sometimes you tend to feel extremely hungry as well.
Other symptoms may also include-
Rapid or irregular heartbeat
Shaking
Sweating
Paleness, cold/clammy skin
Nausea
What to do when you feel hypoglycemic ?
If your blood glucose is less than 70 mg/dL, immediate action must be taken to increase the blood sugar level. In such a condition the healthiest thing to do is get your glucose levels up, immediately.
Get some carbohydrates into your body immediately ? snack on something sweet, maybe glucose tablets
Drinking fruit juices or simple plain water with added sugar also helps.
Check the levels again after 15 minutes and eat some other carb rich snack in case it is still low. Once you?re above 70, follow up with a protein snack to help stabilize your blood sugar.
Untreated mild to moderate hypoglycemia can lead to severe hypoglycemia and unconsciousness. Such a situation requires the intervention of a special and cannot be self treated.
How to prevent hypoglycemia?
Regularly checking your blood sugar level can help you keep it in your target range
Keeping quick fix foods around you whether in office or in the dashboard of your car is a good practice.
People with Hypoglycemia must check their blood glucose level frequently especially during long journey trips. If the person is driving, there could be trouble concentrating or seeing clearly.
Be aware of what causes the sugar levels to drop, when is it that it usually drops ? maintaining a record of these things will better prepare you to handle situations.
It?s critical to eat small snacks every 2-3 three hours. This helps prevent your blood glucose from falling too low.
Maintain a healthy body weight by consuming a healthy diet and engaging in adequate exercise.
Are you diabetic? Do you monitor your blood sugar levels?

Management of Diabetes

Management of Diabetes

Limiting unhealthy food is very important in management of diabetes

It's simple: our portions are oversized. This leads to excess calories and extra pounds. Of particular concern, according to the 2010 dietary guidelines, are jumbo servings of foods with refined grains, solid fats, and added sugars -- think fried chips, fatty burgers, sugary drinks, pastries, and desserts

It's time to downsize extra-large servings of less-healthful foods and upsize servings of foods we're not eating enough of vegetables, fruits, dairy foods, and whole grains. Start by reducing your portions of less-healthful foods by 5 to 10 percent. You'll barely notice the trimming, but you'll immediately taper your intake of calories, carbohydrate, fat, and sodium. Over time, this portion slim-down will improve your weight, blood glucose, cholesterol, and blood pressure

Certificate in Basic Course on Diabetes Management, CCEBDM Certificate in Diabetes, MBBS

What are symptoms for diabetes? What are the solution for diabetes? Iam also suffer from heavy fever.
You are advised to take care about your high fever first. Take bed rest paracetamol tablets for 2 - 3 days. If no relief see your doctor. Symptoms of diabetes are either when one has loss of control over blood sugar level and / or when one has landed with its complications. Many times diabetes is found accidentally as there are no symptoms at all. Generally thirst, hunger, loss of weight, weakness, exhaustion, excess urination, wounds not healing, are common symptoms as of now there is no known scientific cure for diabetes. But it can be kept under control and its complications can be prevented or postponed. Diet, exercise, medications and mental peace under a qualified doctor is a right approach to effectively control diabetes.

It's very essential to have a blood sugar level that can be controlled by oral medicines. If you're taking insulin it means your sugar is not under control. Get hba1c levels checked and also fasting and post prandial blood sugars at regular intervals. If the range is coming at an acceptable level you can be put on oral medicines.
