I had an ankle ligament sprain or injury on 31.12. 2015 and got plastered for 1month. Now its removed and my doctor directed to walk. Now 40 days over. Still I can't walk properly because a small pain still existing when applying force. Slight swelling also there. I'm taking medicines tendon and Indomethacin Tab's. When will I can walk properly, go upstairs and run? What should I do next? Any more treatment is required? At what stage the surgical treatment is considered?

Fellowship in Joint Replacement, Fellowship in Hand Surgery, MS - Orthopaedics, MBBS
Orthopedist, Bangalore
What the doc has done is correct. Swelling is expected and will subside. You need to differentiate between the pain which was initially present usually on the sides of ankle at the time of injury and pain due to stiffness because your ankle was immobilized for 1 month. Well I would suggest you to wear an anklet when you r walking standing or working, remove while resting. Keep your foot elevated over pillows when you r resting. Surgery I don't think is required but if pain persists for more than 3months and is unbearable then it might be looked into after getting mri scan.

Hello Mr Yogesh. Thank you for contacting. A detailed examination is required. Swan neck deformity can be treated by a splint or orhosis. Some exercises and stretching can help you. Physiotherapy should be started. I hope this will help you.

Hi I started running in early morning but after few days I have pain in my legs bone very much. So now I am unable to run right now.

Dip. SICOT (Belgium), MNAMS, DNB (Orthopedics), MBBS
Orthopedist, Delhi
Hi thanks for your query and welcome to lybrate. I am Dr. Akshay from fortis hospital, new delhi. Actually pain at calf/leg region can be due to many reasons, commonly it is muscular in nature but it can also be due to tendons, nerves, blood vessels etc. Since your pain has started after running, my advise to you for initial 2-3 weeks will be: - ice packs application intensively with elevation of your limbs at night - take a short course of anti-inflammatory medication as per your body's suitability - stop your physical activity till pain completely subsides - intensive physical therapy, training and proper muscle conditioning once pain has subsided - slow resumption of physical activities with proper pre activity warm up and stretching of muscles and short increments in duration of physical activity each day as per pain tolerance. - we will get some blood tests for you - serum vitamin d and serum potassium levels, esr and crp once you have all these reports then you can contact me as I can advise you for proper supplementation do not hesitate to contact me if you need any further assistance. Thanks & regards

I am 55 years old getting back pain often. Very difficult to climb the stairs to 2nd floor. Kindly advise.

Dip. SICOT (Belgium), MNAMS, DNB (Orthopedics), MBBS
Orthopedist, Delhi
Hi thanks for your query and welcome to lybrate. I am Dr. Akshay from fortis hospital, new delhi. You have mentioned pain in lower back region as your main problem. It is usual that spine starts showing some degenerative changes with increasing age and it could be a manifestation of that only. If there is only localized pain in back region with no other associated symptoms like radiating pain, numbness, paresthesias etc, and no systemic symptoms like fever, loss of appetite, loss of weight etc, my advice to you for initial 2-3 weeks will be: - to maintain proper posture of your back while working and sleeping - if pain is more then you can take a short course of an anti-inflammatory medication like tab etoshine or even tab paracetamol which suits you - intensive physical therapy initially under supervision of a trained physiotherapist and then to continue at home - adequate calcium & vitamin d intake if levels are low in body - ice packs can applied 3-4 times in a day - analgesic spray for local application like dynapar qps spray can be used and is easily available. - avoid lifting heavyweight/ acute forward bending in mornings etc in case you are having back pain. If there is no improvement in 2-3 weeks with this conservative management, we will need to evaluate you further in form of dynamic x rays to look for any instability as a cause for pain and some blood investigations to rule out any deficiencies etc. Do not hesitate to contact me if you need any further assistance.

Hi i Have a chronic backache and the left hand and leg have a continuous sensation. Won't let me sleep at night.
Hello, please send me your all investigation report to rule out whether it is ldp/ loss or increase of lumbar lordosis or anything else. This is may be due to overweight or deficiency of vitamin d3 and calcium or due to poor posture. Till then follow these advises:- 1. Take calcium supplements and sun bath daily to prevent further damage to your joints. 2. Avoid heavy lifting. 3. Avoid squatting and weight bearing activities. 4. Use western toilet. 5. Wear shock absorbing, good quality of shoes while walking. 6. Keep roll of a towel under your knees while sleeping. 7. Perform some gentle exercises and stretching of your all joints before getting out of your bed. 8. Walk straight with shoulder protracted. 9. Perform deep breathing exercises or yoga for proper functioning of lungs. I can explain you stiffness and pain reducing techniques, if interested. Wish you a happy and pain free life thanks.
