For safer and healthier gums, try massaging your gums with eucalyptus or peppermint oil in a circular motion throughout the mouth on a daily basis. It will increase the blood activation thereby keeping your gums healthy.

Gastritis, lung & sinus infection may also be the cause of bad smell in the mouth. 90% of bad breath is due to a dirty tongue. Kindly consult a physician & dentist in person for further suggestion. We need more investigations to decide upon treatment. You may need deep cleaning along with surgical, gum strengthening procedure. Rinse your mouth thoroughly with a mouth wash after every meals. Use pepsodent tooth paste & gum paint for 2 to 3 weeks. Advance procedures can be done with laser. You may consult me in person. Dental tips: - visit a dentist every six months for cleaning and a thorough dental check-up. Limit sugary food to avoid tooth decay. Gargle your mouth thoroughly after every meal. Scrub gently to clean your tongue with a tongue cleaner. Floss all your teeth inter dentally & brush twice daily, morning & night, up & down short vertical strokes, with ultra-soft bristles, indicator brush. Tooth brush to be changed every 2 months.

I am 50 years age andam having sensitivity in my left side upper part teeth I am using thermoseal tooth paste from last 6 months but not working what shall I do.

MDS
Dentist, Lucknow
Dear, if u are using thermoseal since 6 months and it is not giving you any relief then there are little chances of root exposure due to gum disease but other problems like caries or attrition wasting of tooth can be possibilities. U should now get a professional examination done by a dentist for the management of your problem. Thanks n healing regards.

Sometimes due to various reasons there can be a secondary tooth decay below the filling in the teeth that were previously treated and filled. An X-Ray will reveal the exact spread of the decay. If the decay has not reached pulp then the treatment would be to take out the previous filling, remove the further decayed portion of the tooth and place a new filling. If the X-Ray of your tooth shows the infection involving the pulp then Root Canal Treatment needs to be done. As you have mentioned that you are not able to chew food at all, I suspect that pulp may have got involved and RCT may be required for you. The total cost may start from ₹2000 and go upwards depending on teeth, dentist, location, crown etc.

What Do You Do About a Severe Toothache?

What Do You Do About a Severe Toothache?

Those who have experienced it would vouch for the fact that toothache is one of the worst pains. There could be times when the attack happens out of nowhere and you are crying for relief.

The tooth has 2 parts - the visible part called the crown and the invisible part called the root which is embedded in the jaw bone and covered by the gums.

Both the crown and the root have 3 layers from inside out. The crown has enamel, dentin, and pulp. The enamel is the mineralized part of the tooth, dentin has fine sensory dentinal tubules, and the pulp receives nerve and blood supply to the tooth through a small orifice at the end of the tooth called the apex.  On the root surface, instead of enamel, there is a softer substance called cementum.  The dentin and the pulp continue through the tooth, but are thinner in the root portion of the tooth.

The mouth has the largest amount of bacteria in the body. These act on the food deposits on the tooth and produce acid which leads to breakdown of the enamel. The only symptom when enamel breakdown happens is food lodgment, and it continues till treatment ensues. Once the breakdown reaches the dentin, sensitivity sets in, and most people go for treatment then. If not, the next layer is the pulp, when there is severe pain.  This acute pulpitis causes pain in spurts and can be unbearable.

On the root surface, if there is periodontal disease and the gum line goes down, then cementum gets worn off (far more easily than enamel) and decay reaches the dentin and pulp (again faster than in the crown).

Whatever the case, the treatment would be the same:

  • Dental examination, clinical testing, and x-rays would be diagnostic. Tapping the tooth would reproduce the same pain and that is indicative of acute pulpitis
  • Antibiotics and pain killers would be given to control the pain
  • Once the infection subsides, root canal therapy is initiated.  Using the decayed portion to gain access to the root, thin instruments called reamers and files are used to clean out the pulp space completely. They are then shaped to accommodate an inert substance called gutta percha which ensures infection does not seep into the tooth again.
  • With RCT, the tooth is weakened, and therefore a crown needs to be placed. This could either be a ceramic crown or a full metal crown based on economic and esthetic reasons.

The best way to avoid this is regular visits to a dentist so that decay is identified in the early stages and treated with the minimal cost and maximum natural tooth preservation.

Mouth Sores - 7 Ways to Get Rid of it!

Mouth Sores - 7 Ways to Get Rid of it!

One of the irritating conditions that can affect the mouth of a person is sores, which can be quite painful. These sores can affect anyone of any age group or gender. Sores may make it difficult for a person to eat, speak or even swallow. Here are a few ways through which you can get rid of mouth sores quickly or at least alleviate the symptoms to lessen the pain:

1. Topical products - There are various types of creams and lotions which are available in the market as over the counter drugs for treating or at least lessening the symptoms of mouth sores. Some of the common chemicals used to treat the sores are Fluocinonide, Benzocaine and Hydrogen peroxide.

2. Food and nutritional supplements - In many cases the sores are caused within the body due to deficiency of nutrients such as Zinc, Vitamin B12 or B6 and the doctor may prescribe special medications to supplement the need for those within the body.

3. Rinses - Certain special types of oral rinses are prescribed by the doctors when treating mouth sores. Most of the rinses prescribed by the doctors have a steroid, namely dexamethasone, which proves to be effective in the treatment of mouth sores.

4. Cauterizing or destroying sores - In certain cases where topical or oral treatments haven't worked it may be necessary to correct it by cauterizing or using a special device to burn and destroy the sore so that new tissues can grow in its place.

5. Oral medications - Certain oral medications may be prescribed for sores which are caused due to underlying physical conditions such as ulcers.

6. Avoiding spicy food - Spicy foods are also a leading cause for canker sores as it may cause chemical imbalances within the stomach as well as inside the mouth and hence should be avoided as much as possible.

7. Improving general oral hygiene - Regular brushing, flossing, and proper oral care will definitely reduce the chances of getting oral sores. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a Dentist.

Hi. If the pain is severe than definetly show to a dentist nearby. If their is food stucking in your tooth then it would be caries i. E tooth is decaying and get your caries removes and filling done. It looks as you are telling you might require root canal treatment. If you use pain killers than do a proper course of both antibiotics and painkillers for 3 consecutive days with taking both together morning and evening each day. It will temporary give you relief by subsiding your pain. But show it to a dentist before.

Hello Doctor My mother suffering from white ulcer and she is applying soregel but no relief. What should i do?

BDS
Dentist, Mumbai
If the ulcer is recent like a few days you need not worry it will heal on its own. You can give her some multivitamin tablets available over the counter. If the ulcer is persisting for more than 2 weeks, get her examined by your dentist to check if there is some other cause for the ulcer, like a sharp tooth. A proper evaluation is needed if the ulcer persists.

Hi. I know that wisdom teeth removals are very painful, your dentist might have told you about post-operative instructions, still I shall emphasize the importance of doing warm saline (Pinch of salt) rinses 6-7 times daily, have soft little cool diet for few days, also take medicines diligently as your operating doctor must have prescribed you. Last of all avoid opening the mouth wide to chew food and eat from the opposite side for few days.
