Can Mood Changes Be A Symptom Of Dementia?

DPM, Msc Psychiatry, MBBS, Mental health training DMHP Nimhans Echo
Psychiatrist, Muzaffarpur
Can Mood Changes Be A Symptom Of Dementia?

Dementia is a disorder characterized by a decline in mental capabilities in a person. It is primarily caused by Alzheimer's disease but can also be caused by damage to the brain from an injury or a stroke. The cells of the brain fail to communicate with each other in dementia. People suffering from dementia have difficulties in taking part in regular activities as their mental functioning is impaired.

The major symptoms of dementia are problems in recalling, ineffective communication, inability to concentrate and impaired reasoning abilities. It may also affect the short-term memory of a person when he/she may be unable to keep track of his/her belongings. Dementia can be progressive where the symptoms gradually increase with age.

Some early symptoms of dementia are-

1. Mood changes - Excessive mood swings along with changes in personality are very common symptoms of dementia. For instance- a reserved person suddenly becoming very outgoing is a commonly observed change in cases of dementia.

2. Problems in completing routine tasks - If a person suddenly starts to face problems in doing routine work such as maintaining simple accounts and paying bills then it can early signs of dementia.

3. Confusion - When a person starts to get confused in remembering small details and recognizing faces, it could point towards dementia.

4. Repetition - Dementia causes people to repeat words they have just said as the short term memory gets impaired. It also causes people to repeat small tasks a multiple number of times.

5. Losing interest - A person may start to lose interest in regular activities and avoid them altogether. They may appear devoid of emotions and not engage socially.

6. Communication - People fail to communicate effectively as they may be unable to express their thoughts clearly. They may also fail to understand when others communicate with them.

7. Impaired sense of direction - A person may fail to recognize places and wander around. He/she will face problems in going to places or in remembering places. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a Psychiatrist.

General Physician,
This is correct tab and dose. Diabetes, often referred to by doctors as diabetes mellitus, describes a group of metabolic diseases in which the person has high blood glucose (blood sugar), either because insulin production is inadequate, or because the body's cells do not respond properly to insulin, or both. It is a difficult task to control blood sugar in the desired normal range. Whatever we eat is metabolised to sugar in the body to provide energy for our daily activities. For the absolute control, one has to monitor his / her blood sugar at regular intervals (Self-Monitoring of Blood glucose – SMBG). Though difficult, this can be done by a glucometer and keep a record. Get an idea of Fasting sugar (FBS) and 2 hours after food (PPBS), & HbA1C (inform me) and check before dinner and after every major food. The basic idea is to reduce the food intake to 1/3 of what you take now. The dictum of sugar control is diet, exercise, diet + medicine and at later stage medicine+ Insulin will be needed. There are different diet plans of varying calories for each person depending on his activity & life style. For diabetes, hypertension (high BP) and many long-term illness control there is the need for regular advice and follow up. Just one time consultation or advice is not enough to guide a diabetic in scientifically & medically correct manner. For giving you regular follow up you ask me with all details like your daily eating pattern and medicines you take. I assure you a proper guidance. If you keep in touch personally. I would recommend you not to put pressure while urinating. Let the urine come out naturally. If some little amount of urine remains back in the bladder it is not an issue. Don't bother. The bladder has the capacity to store a lot of urine otherwise. If you strain while urinating you may cause other problems. If you are facing burning sensations or increased frequency. Please consult a urologist. Hope this answer has helped you in some way. Do let me know if you have any other queries.

Hi 20 days ago I sat on my left leg for about 30 minutes. When I got up I found finger next to my smallest finger and part of toe numb. Its been 20 days but no improvement in condition/ I took mecomore injection (5) now what to do? no pain. No burning sensation. Please guide me.

MBBS, MS - Orthopaedics
Orthopedist, Delhi
Numbness in leg is due to pressure on the nerve. This could be due tonerve root compression. Rule out diabetes & vit. D deficiency or any other metabolic disorder. Sleep on a hard bed with soft bedding on it. Use no pillow under the head. Any way take paracetamol 250mg od & sos you will need other supportive medicines also. Do back (spine) exercises make sure you are not allergic to any of the medicines you are going to take you may have to use lumbosacral support for some time. Avoid painful act/activities. Take medicines as prescribed it may have to be further investigated. Do ask for detailed treatment plan. Do not ignore. It could be beginning of a serious problem.

My mother is 45 years old she got paralyzed last year on 1st jan. She is almost recovered but her fingers are still not responding. Please help!

BPTh/BPT

Paralysis cases takes a lot of time to recover. You need to have patience. Also emphasize on passively moving her fingers frequently in day. Make sure she grips some large cylindrical objects first like glass and then progress to fine objects like spoon, keys, plates.

I am unable to flex my hand fingers since 3 days it's in extended position. Can I know what's the cause for it?

PDDM, MHA, MBBS
General Physician, Nashik
1. Usually no identifiable cause is present in case of locked fingers. 2. Possibly cause identified, is shortening of tendons/ muscles due to reduced activity. 3. Stretching of involved muscle group, daily twice and especially before going to sleep will be helpful. 4. Also to improve muscle activity calcium and potassium supplements, with good hydration (at least 6-8 liters of water per day) will be helpful. Food rich in potassium like banana, avocada, nuts, etc. Will be helpful. If finger locking, becomes painful and frequent, release surgery might be necessary. It appears to be possible early stages and stretching will be helpful.
