Thyroid and Sex

The thyroid gland is a tiny gland that produces the hormones which affect the body's metabolic process. When these hormones are produced in less or more quantities, it may result in an imbalance of the thyroid gland, leading to a range of thyroid issues including hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism and others. Overproduction or underproduction of the thyroid hormones can also cause a variety of other symptoms and conditions. While this affects the state of one's general well being, health and weight, it also has an effect on the patient's libido.

Let us learn more about the link between thyroid and sex:

  • Thyroid in Men: Men who are suffering from hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism as well as related conditions like goitre or Garves Disease, have complained of sex related problems. These problems are known to affect at least 50% to 60% of the patients, as per various medical reports. The sex related issues include premature ejaculation, low sex drive, delayed ejaculation, erectile dysfunction, and others.
  • Thyroid in Women: It has been found that almost 10% of women over the age of 50 suffer from some form or the other of thyroid hormone imbalance. Apart from fatigue, depression and muscle ache as well as weight alteration, depending on the type of thyroid problem, thyroid patients who are women have also experienced problems when it comes to libido. Sexual dysfunction and arousal problems are high on the list of these issues.
  • Hormonal Treatment: One of the most common ways of treating this sex related thyroid problems for thyroid patients is through the use of hormonal therapy. Besides getting the testosterone, estrogen and other androgen levels checked, the patient must also get a full hormonal evaluation along with a check-up of the adrenal function. This can help in pointing any anomalies and the hormones that will require replacement with the help of appropriate medication.
  • Optimal Drug Treatment: A T4 only drug or Levothyroxine can lead to a resolution of sexual problems that one encounters as a part of thyroid problems. There are many doctors who may switch to a T3 drug once the libido is restored and brought back to normal.
  • Supplements: Men may require testosterone supplements, while women may need estrogen or progesterone supplements to tackle the sexual problems in such cases. These can be rendered as a patch or through an injection.
  • Sex Therapy: In many cases, sex therapy considered as a popular and effective form of addressing the problems and helping the patients get around the same. This is especially helpful if depression is one of the symptoms of the thyroid disorder.

A thorough physical check-up also helps in treating such problems for thyroid patients.

Causes And Treatment Of Infertility!

Causes And Treatment Of Infertility!

The inability to conceive for a prolonged duration after trying to do so is usually termed as infertility. This is usually diagnosed when a couple is unable to conceive even after trying regularly, without any kind of contraceptives. There may be many causes and factors for this and it may occur in either or both partners. So, you all need to know the causes and treatment of infertility.

  1. Age: Age is a major factor that can lead to infertility for either partner. Usually, the trend now is to delay having a baby until a woman is in her thirties or even forties, in some cases. This has an adverse effect, particularly on the age of the maternal egg which may or may not be effective as far as fertilisation goes. With the advancement of age, one loses the guarantee of genetic normalcy of the egg as well.
  2. Disorders in ovulation in females: Ovulation is an essential function that helps in releasing the egg that needs to be fertilised when it comes together with the sperm at the time of ovulation. This usually occurs at a certain time every month. But disorders like PCOS or Polycystic Ovary Syndrome can lead to an inability on the part of the ovaries to release these eggs. The treatment for this includes medication that will help in maintaining more regular cycles for the release of eggs.
  3. Male factor causing Infertility: In many cases, it has been seen that anomalies in the semen analysis reveal problems of infertility with males as of low sperm count, low motility of sperm, low quantity of alive and active sperm when it comes to natural conception. In such cases, a sexologist can prescribe you medicines that will increase the semen production for better quantity and quality of the sperm. The doctor can also ask the patient to go through a number of lifestyle changes too includes abstinence from smoking and excessive drinking, as well as the cultivation of a less stressful environment. Hormonal treatment or even surgery may also required to help in some severe cases.
  4. Endometrial polyps: In such cases, the female partner may develop finger like growths that can protrude in the form of tissue and come out of the uterine layer or the uterus. The removal of these polyps with the help of surgical procedures usually helps in such cases.

In many cases where mediation fails, the patients may have to go through IVF (In Vitro Fertilisation) or other such procedures to conceive a child with artificial methods. One must explore all options and find out the best one in terms of the infertility causes that the couple may be facing. You will also need to ensure that you have a well trained and experienced sexologist doctor who can help you with the process and guide you completely about the cause of problem and prescribe you best treatment to manage infertility at the right point of time.

Hello, The chances of pregnancy are minimal. You may wait for another 5 days and if menses do not resume then get a urine pregnancy test done. If negative then you can opt for a withdrawal bleed with progesterones.

If you have regular periods them 12-16 days of your periods are best time to get pregnant. How to calculate that is. Suppose your period date is 10. Then add 10+12=22. Means 22.23, 24, 25, 26 are dates when you can get pregnant.

Diet Plan For Pregnant Women!

Diet Plan For Pregnant Women!

Pregnancy is one of the most important phases in a woman’s life and it is at this time, that proper maintenance of health is of utmost importance; not only for the mother but also for the health of the fetus. What you eat during pregnancy is extremely important and plays a major role in determining you as well as your baby’s health.

A count of 300 extra calories per day is needed, particularly at the latter stages of the pregnancy when the baby grows at a rapid rate; the calories should be particularly derived from nutritious food items. This helps in contributing to the baby’s development and growth. The main source of nourishment for the baby comes from what you eat and drink. Hence, here are some easy tips that women can easily incorporate in their diet plan during pregnancy:

  1. Prenatal vitamins with folic acid and iron: Iron helps purify your blood and folic acid helps in preventing defects during birth. Hence, daily consumption of these nutrients is extremely important.
  2. Food rich in complex carbohydrates: Food items such as whole wheat atta, multi grain bread, brown rice, whole wheat pasta, potatoes, fruits and vegetables which are high in carbohydrates are required for the daily production of energy and hence, should be consumed in an adequate amount.
  3. Decaffeinated tea or coffee: Decaffeinated tea or coffee should be given as much preference as possible. Intake of soda should be limited and substituted with increased amounts of water. Restrict or if possible, abstain from alcohol completely during this phase.
  4. Shellfish and fish: Shellfish and fish such as swordfish, tilefish and king mackerel, that have high levels of mercury, should be avoided, as mercury levels have been found to interfere with the development of brain of the unborn baby. Some easily available and common fish with lower levels of mercury include shrimp, salmon and catfish.
  5. Boost immune system: The immune system (suppressed during pregnancy) can be boosted by having two spoons of sunflower seed butter containing vitamin E. This helps in building the red blood cells of the fetus.
  6. Control Cholesterol: Since cholesterol levels soar during pregnancy as well as breastfeeding, sprinkling ground flaxseeds on cereals and salads can help in controlling the levels of cholesterol, thus keeping various heart diseases at bay.
  7. Calcium: Calcium is needed during pregnancy for easing the muscle contractions as well as proper functioning of the nerves. Adequate levels of calcium are found in milk, yogurt, cheese, sardines and salmon.

Minimise morning sickness:

Morning sickness is most common in the early stages of pregnancy but sadly it’s not always limited to the morning! Help minimise the effects by:

  • Eating little and often, basing meals and snacks on starchy foods like whole wheat atta, multi grain bread, brown rice, porridge, plain biscuits, crisp-breads, oatcakes, pasta, rice or potatoes.
  • Minimising fatty foods which are harder to digest.
  • Choosing quick and easy recipes which need little preparation.
  • Keeping a couple of plain biscuits beside your bed – it can help to nibble on one before you get up. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a Dietitian/Nutritionist.
