My pet cat is one month old and she is suffering from cough and cold .what can I do for her?

MVSc, BVSc
Veterinarian, Secunderabad
Better to allow her to breathe steam vapours from a little distance, add eukalyptus oil to cotton and put near her in the room. Also you can apply vicks vapourub near her nose. Wipe any secretions near nose with warm salt water.

You give full of water as your dog want. It may be due to acidic urine so I advise routine urine test then consult the doctor.

My dog is vomiting water like liquid little foamy with tiny bits of blood, it happened twice, one 5 days back in the morning around 4am, then at 2am. During vomiting he collapsed and paralyzed without any movement. Both time he woke up after 5 mins and he was active. I gave him Ranitac and vomited (half). Please help me, I am scared, he is 12 yrs old. 6 months back he had UTI. He is being given Nefrotec DS 2 tabs a day from 6 months as Advised by Vet. Please Please Help me, save my boy.

MVSc (Ph.D)
Veterinarian,
Your dog has chronic kidney problem and for that your vet has prescribed nefrotec ds2 tablets daily one since six months, which controls kidney damage, so continue further. You should not give him heavy food containing high fat & protein. Light diet like gruel of ragi, rice, wheat, rave should be given, with butter milk, soya milk also. Fruit juices, give perinorm injection which also controls vomition & then give ranitec orally 8 hourly. Give liver tonics like liv 52, or livobex orally 10 ml twice a day, imferon inj or its capsules with folic acid will help to build blood in the body. Sgot & sgpt & esr tests to be made to know the health condition of your dog. You should keep daily observation and make note of it. If vomition does not stop, take him to veterinary hospitals for iv fluids & further treatment for vomition.

Please tell your breed and age. Also it cant be possible for a heavy breed to keep it small you have to choose a smaller breed for this rather than asking to keep it small.

Dear sir, as far as the dog is a street dog you need to worry. In this case even thought the dog is a street dog it does not seems to be bitten case as you dint have any injury or cut wound. To get rabies you need to be: 1. Have a cut wound first then rabies dog saliva has to be in contact with the wound. 2. Have to watch the dog for 30 days. Because the rabies dog cannot survive more than 45 days. 3. Rabies is a viral diseases so it needs a proper contact with the infection wild rabid carnivores. (like hiv infection) 4. So in your cases what you have done is more than enough.

Depression In Dogs - How To Deal With It?

Depression In Dogs - How To Deal With It?

Depression in humans is well-known and well-documented, but depression in dogs is less known and studies have not been extended up to a deep level till now. As we say dogs are better known as "humans", it is natural for them to feel low and depressed at times. Some of the dog owners must have noticed that all of a sudden their dogs start acting in a way which is very unlike them. Sometimes, they find places to hide constantly or are spotted to be sleeping all day long.

The reasons for such depression are more or less the same in every species and can be interpreted as the following:

  1. Abusing: Just like humans, dogs get psychologically affected by the way their owner treats them. If you abuse your dog in a way in which it was not raised up, it is sure that your dog will slip into depression and in a few cases, might display some signs of aggression too.
  2. Critical depression: Critical depression occurs due to some changes in the dog's body. Chemical imbalances may provoke certain behaviors; one of them could be depression. In such situations, it is recommended to take your dog to a Veterinarian in order to seek professional help.
  3. Grief: If your dog's companion or its known faces drift away, it affects the dog’s behavior massively and may result into depression. This is because with time, the dogs develop strong emotional bonds and it gets hard for them to handle themselves in their absence.
  4. Aging: Aging is another reason behind your dog's depression. It is very simple to know and understand too that your dog will not be as energetic as it was in its young days. Also, sometimes sensing that their lifespan is about to end may lead them into depression.

How To Deal With It?
By being compassionate, as most of the times your dog may feel depressed because of the treatment you offer to it. They always want to be loved and adored by their owners and this cures everything unnatural happening with them. Try to play with them whenever you come back home, feed them gently, run your fingers through their fur and be extra attentive. All of these will enlighten their mood. Alternatively, you may try out other methods like going out for a walk twice a day, let it socialize with others in the park, let it feel loved more than anything.

For critical depression and grief, it is better to take recommendation from a Veterinarian. Try being patient with your dog about everything. Not all dogs recover rapidly. Hence, before snapping at it again, give it some time and don't pressurize it for anything that comes from its master affects it the deepest. For more comfort, you may bring a new pet which would be its companion for the entire day. Be cautious about the situation and selection. Sometimes they become envious due to such occurrences. Make sure they both get along well.

Osteoarthritis is related with genetic predisposition, inherited problems or defects in bones & joints. This painful condition often requires veterinary pain killers, supplements which protects bones and joints, scientific measures like controlled exercise, swimming & physiotherapy under the veterinary medical supervision. As pollution related features can bring such disorders causing free radical damage, this problem can be managed and a quality living for the pets can be provided with the application of advanced medicines like glucosamine, chondroitin sulphate, MSM, micronutrients ete. Many commercial diets are available which can nourish pets skeletal system effectively and a good plane of nutrition can guard a pet from gaining extra body weight which aggravates osteoarthritis. A perfect dietary and lifestyle management therefore is highly essential for combating such painful disorders. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a Veterinarian.

Hello, mostly dogs at this age are in fast growing stage and problem like this can either increase or get resolved. It depends on which region is affected so getting an x ray of back legs will help to find the extent of problem. Till that give some pain medication to dog n avoid slippery floor n commercial dog food.

Veterinarian,
Sir/mam, I have a 6 years old male pomeranian dog n due to some reason I adopted a stray dog (male) in feb 2017. Ever...
Well, 1. It may be mainly due to harmonal changes, the dogs attains the maturity at 6 to 9 months, they may show aggressive behavior during maturity (stray dog) 2. The changes mainly Becoz you may be showing too much love to the stray dog rather then your own pet, due to jealousy behaviour (they too are like humans) also it may do like that.

My dog is 5 years old and it is a street dog, he is suffering from cough from last one week. Please Suggest can we give him some cough syrup?

M.V.Sc. & PhD Scholar Veterinary Medicine
Veterinarian, Navi Mumbai
Hello, As your pet is suffering from cough, i'll suggest you to get him checked by nearby vet and also a xray examination. This will help you to know the exact reason for coughing. As their are many etiological factors for coughing, only symptomatic treatment with cough syrup is not advisable. So get a proper advice from a vet after complete examination of your pet. Hope this information is helpful for you. Thank you.
