PSYCHOSOMATIC PROBLEMS

Psychosomatic illness
Psychosomatic disorder, now more commonly referred to as psychophysiologic illness, is an illness whose symptoms are caused by mental processes of the sufferer rather than immediate physiological causes. If a medical examination can find no physical or organic cause, or if an illness appears to result from emotional conditions such as anger, anxiety, depression or guilt, then it might be classified as psychosomatic.
However, the term "psychosomatic" has developed a negative connotation in recent years, as many people mistakenly believe it to mean that the patient is "making up" his or her symptoms such as pain, has "mental problems," or is otherwise malingering. This is not its true meaning, as psychosomatic pain, for example, is very real pain, and is caused by unconscious rather than conscious sources, and is perfectly normal and not under conscious control.
Psychosomatic symptoms show that a human body can create physical symptoms that compensate for relationship deficiencies. (For example, hypnosis-induced allergic reactions indicate that a person's immune response can dramatically change during an intense mind-body relationship).
Very often, psychosomatic illness is influenced by external factors or players. Severe stress caused by factors in work, relationship, and family are known to cause bowel illness and accompanying dehydration, stomach or headaches, nausea, incontinence, or loss of hair.
Somatopsychic illness is an illness where the mental and psychological processes of the sufferer are affected by physiological causes. Emotional conditions similar to psychosomatic illness are experienced as well as decreased mental functioning. Physiological factors involved include, but are not limited to, cases of persons diagnosed with chronic pain and/or a physical disorder, cases where the person experiences frequent episodes of pain over a long period of time, and cases where a person has exacerbated levels of physical pain over a prolonged period of time..

Solutions
Although psychosomatic disease might improve or disappear following suggestion by a recognized authority, both the psycho and somatic aspects of psychosomatic symptoms may vanish if people improve the relationship of mind to body. Anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa, for example, are usually considered to be psychosomatic illnesses. Like many eating disorders, they respond well to relationship coaching and various forms of psychotherapy.
It is often very difficult to distinguish if a disease has a psychological root, however, it is suggested that 70% of all diseases are the result of anxiety and stress and hence, have a "psychological" root in this sense, even though stress and anxiety themselves involve many biochemical, hormonal and genetic aspects.
Emotional conditions such as anger, anxiety, depression and guilt can be treated using Hypnotherapy and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, among other therapies, although these two particular treatments are considered controversial by many.
Cognitive behavior therapy is a widely-used treatment for anxiety, depression and related disorders.

History
Many identifiable illnesses have previously been labelled as 'hysterical' or 'psychosomatic', for example asthma, allergies, and migraines. Some illnesses are under debate, including multiple chemical sensitivity, Gulf War Syndrome, and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. Some people suggest that stigmatics suffer a psychosomatic illness based on identifying with the biblical crucified Jesus.

I am 21 years old having a problem of pcod in border line. My periods are irregular. Is there any requirement of immediate treatment? What are the problems associated with this in my future? Please suggest me an advice and tell me some home remedies for this.

PG Hom, London, BHMS
Homeopath, Mumbai
Hello lybrate-user, if you have border line pcod, the best way to stay away from it is by performing regular exercise. You can perform any exercise that you are comfortable with but I would suggest you do yoga. Yogic asanas like paschimottanasan, suryanamaskar, tadasan and shirshasan together are very beneficial for pcod. If you regularly perform these exercises and walk for at least 30 minutes a day, you will prevent pcod. A minimum exercise of 1 hour is needed in a day.

If T4 level is 13.24ug/dl and tsh is 2.67ulU/ml in pregnancy what precautions should I take?

MD - Obstetrtics & Gynaecology
Gynaecologist, Mumbai
If T4 level is 13.24ug/dl and tsh is 2.67ulU/ml in pregnancy what precautions should I take?
Your tsh report is absolutely normal for any weeks of pregnancy. T4 value in first trimester is 6.5 - 10.1, second trimester 7.5 - 10.3 and third 6.3 - 9.7. Thyroid levels in pregnancy are best evaluated by free t4 levels and not t4 levels which can be wrong. Reference values for free t4 are 0.8- 1.2, 0.6 - 1, and 0.5 - 0.8 respectively. So it looks like normal report for you but you should get free t4 value to confirm.

Common Allergies - How Homeopathic Remedies Can Help?

Allergies are an extreme reaction of the immune system of the body due to a hypersensitivity to foreign substances such as food, clothing, dust or pollen, among others. The reaction by the immune system may be quite damaging to your body. The allergies tend to vary vastly from one person to the other and the allergens also tend to differ. Some of the most common types of allergies commonly prevalent among the general population are – food allergies, nasal allergies, dust allergies, skin rashes due to contact with an allergen among others.

Homeopathic approach to treating allergies
Homeopathy is a symptom based medication and doesn’t only look to treat or lessen the symptoms but also cure the problems from deep down. It is also useful in relieving symptoms as well. Homeopathy takes into account not only the outward symptoms but the general physical and mental constitution of a person to prescribe the best medicine or combination of medications for you.

Some common homeopathic treatments for common allergies are mentioned below:

  1. Nasal allergies: One of, if not the most common form of allergic reactions, nasal allergies can be caused by a host of allergens such as dust, pollen, cloth fibers among many others. Some of the common symptoms of nasal allergies are nonstop discharge from the nose, sneezing, itching in the nose and throat, watery eyes among others. Some of the effective homeopathic medications depending on the exactness of the symptoms that may be prescribed by a doctor for your condition are Kali Bichromicum, Arsenic Album, Gelsemium and Allium Cepa. Your doctor will evaluate the exact symptoms you have and only then prescribe either one or a combination of these medications to you.
  2. Skin allergies These are another common form of allergies which occur on the skin, mostly due to contact with allergens. Eczema or allergic dermatitis is the most common form of skin allergies. Other problems such as hives may occur where areas of the skin start forming raised, red patches. The skin may also generally swell which can be temporarily relieved by cold compress. Some of the common medications prescribed in these cases are Sulphur, Urtica Urens and Apis Mellifica
  3. Food allergies: Food items are also one of the common causes behind allergies. The manifestation of food allergies may occur in four ways, which are Itchy and runny nose with discharges, runny and itchy eyes, and problems with breathing; manifestations on the skin such as hives, swelling or any other form of an itchy rash; gastric issues such as loose stools; bloating, nausea, vomiting and pain in the stomach being the most common symptoms; and some allergies may also cause the mouth, face and lips to swell as well. Some of the most common food allergens are nuts, milk and milk products, seafood, especially shellfish, eggs, wheat. The doctor will study your symptoms and disposition before deciding the best form of medication for you. Some of the common medications prescribed for food allergies depending on the type of food causing the allergies are Carbo vegetabilis, Sulphur, Nux Vomica, Urtica Urens, Lycopodium, Natrum Muriaticum and Colocynth and others
  4. Dust allergies: This is by far one of the most common forms of allergies and is caused due to the inhalation of dust. Common symptoms are excessive sneezing, runny and blocked nose and difficulties in breathing. Some of the commonly prescribed forms of medication for such cases are Lycopersicum, Bromium, Arsenic Album

For Herpes what should we do. Any medicine name? Please tell the things that we should eat!
Caused by the herpes simplex virus, the disease can affect both men and women. Pain, itching and small sores appear first. They form ulcers and scabs. After initial infection, genital herpes lies dormant in the body. Symptoms can recur for years. Medication can be used to manage outbreaks.

Any time when you miss your expected date of period you should do urine test. Remember -Pregnancy is possible only on one day of cycle, day of ovulation when ovum is released from ovary of woman. That is why couple should have 12 to 24 cycles of unprotected sex around time of ovulation before going to Gynecologist or infertility specialist for further evaluation and advise.

Treatment for ovarian cysts through Ayurveda

Treatment for ovarian cysts through Ayurveda

Ovarian cysts is a common problem that affects women in their childbearing years. These cysts develop inside the ovaries at the time of ovulation.

These cysts are of four main types:

  1. Polycystic ovaries

  2. Endometriosis

  3. Cystadenomas

  4. Dermoid cysts

In most cases, ovarian cysts resolve themselves, but in some cases they can cause pain and grow.

Ayurveda is a holistic form of alternate medication that can be quite effective when it comes to treating ovarian cysts. This form of medication has negligible side effects and hence, can be prescribed to women of all ages. Apart from medication, Ayurveda also involves changes in lifestyle and diet. Ayurvedic herbs help balance the hormones in a woman’s body and thereby improve the overall functioning of the ovaries as well.

Some of the Ayurvedic herbs used in the treatment of ovarian cysts are as follows:

  1. Guggul: This herb has the potential to revitalise cells and can rejuvenate a person. Guggul or commiphora mukul also has purifying properties that helps regulate lipid production and increase iron levels in a person’s blood. It also helps in weight loss and increases metabolism.

  2. Shilajit: The Ayurvedic herb asphaltum or shilajit improves stamina and the ability to deal with physical and mental stress. It is also known to increase sexual desire and enhance libido for both men and women.

  3. Amalaki: Amalaki or emblica officinalis is best known for its ability to rejuvenate cells and rid the body of free radicals. It also helps boost immunity, aids in the development of healthy skin and slows down the aging process. Amalaki helps with digestion and boosts metabolism along with maintaining the proper functioning of the liver.

  4. Aloe: Aloe is the most common Ayurvedic product used for skin care and anti-ageing products. Apart from skincare and hair care, aloe also helps relieve hypertension and has well known antioxidant properties. Additionally, it helps deal with high blood pressure and respiratory problems.

  5. Vitamins and minerals: Some vitamins and minerals boost immunity and have the ability to destroy abnormal cells such as cysts. Zinc helps prevent ovarian cysts, helps the body get rid of free radicals and aids in normal cell growth. Vitamin B complex helps in converting excessive estrogen into less weaker forms and hence balances hormone levels. Antioxidants like vitamin A and E protect the cells against damage and abnormal changes in the cell growth. Vitamin C also helps boost immunity and gives the body the ability to fight illnesses and infections. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult an ayurveda and ask a free question.

ERA (Endometrial receptivity assay)

If you have had implantation failure, we can help you

It is a state-of-the-art diagnostic method, to evaluate ,from a molecular point of view, the status of the endometrial receptivity.

ERA indicates the window of implantation (WOI), increasing your chances of successful transferThe endometrial receptivity is the status in which the endometrium is ready for embryo implantation to take place. This occurs around days 19-21 in each menstrual cycle of a fertile woman. Until now, the only study done on the endometrium was an ultrasound scan, and there was not analysis method available to help doctors in their clinical practice.

Now, during the process to treat an infertile couple, the ERA test (Endometrial Receptivity Array) leads to the evaluation, at molecular level, of the endometrial factor. This molecular tool allows us to diagnose whether the endometrium is receptive or not by analysing the expression of a group of genes related to endometrial receptivity. For that, an endometrial biopsy must be performed at P+5 (hormone replacement therapy cycle) or at LH+7 (natural cycle), and after its shipment to our installation, the expression of 238 genes is analyzed. According with these expression values, the endometrium is classified as receptive or non receptive by a computational predictor.
