Child Sex Abuse: WHO Stipulates Guidelines On Its Response!

On how to respond to children and adolescents who have been sexually abused, the World Health Organization has come up with clinical guidelines on the same. The guidelines mention recommendations for the healthcare providers who may directly receive a victim of sexual abuse or may identify sexual abuse during the course of diagnosis and treatment. These frontline healthcare providers include general practitioners, gynaecologists, paediatricians and nurses.

The short-term as well as long-term mental health impact, as highlighted by WHO, of sexual abuse on children are:

  1. Post-traumatic stress
  2. Anxiety
  3. Depression
  4. Eating disorders
  5. Problems with relationships
  6. Sleep disorder
  7. Suicidal behaviour

The new WHO guidelines focus on recommendations and good practice suggestions in terms of:

  1. Disclosure made by the child
  2. Obtaining medical history
  3. Conducting physical examinations and forensic investigations
  4. Documenting findings
  5. Offering preventive treatment for HIV post-exposure
  6. Pregnancy prevention, and other sexually transmitted diseases
  7. Psychological, mental health interventions among others

Looking thin is a relative term which is more often for loving parents. Growth is assessed by weight and height. Start well coocked home made mashed solids and semi solids, if not yet started.

My 2.5 month old son is exclusively breast feed. However, he passes motion only once every 3-4 days. Now it's been 5 days. Should we be worried about it? Is there anything which can be given to him?

Since the child is exclusively on breast feed, you shd include more liquids in your diet. Take water, fruits, nimbupani, buttermilk, coconut water etc. Considering the hot weather, the baby needs to be fed more frequently.

Occasional Vomiting should not be a case of worry. At six months, the baby is ready for starting complementary feeding. Begin with mashed banana, thin khichri and vege soup. One thing at a time. Always check expiry date on packaged milk. Don't use bottle for feeding. Katori and spoon is good.

My 15 years old daughter has suddenly gained weight. Her thyroid reports are negative. I have diabetes, thyroid and b.p.and both myself and my husband is over weight. Is it a genetic reason for my daughter to gain weight?

MBBS, CCEBDM, Diploma in Diabetology, Diploma in Clinical Nutrition & Dietetics, Cetificate Course In Thyroid Disorders Management (CCMTD)
Endocrinologist, Hubli-Dharwad
Hello, Thanks for the query. Weight gain can be familial tenancy. It is necessary to give a close look at her daily routine, particularly food habits - intake of junk foods, pastries, bakery items, deep fried foods and colas. Secondly the extent of daily physical activity. These need to be altered. If parents have (even one of them) diabetes, then children have to be very careful and shoould avoid becoming overweight. Plus increase their physical activity. Intake of green leafy vegetables and fruits is very essential. Thanks.

Improtance of Vaccination

MBBS, Diploma in Public Health ( Preventive and Social Medicine)
General Physician, Navi Mumbai
Play video

Hello, I am Dr Mangesh Chandewar. I have done post graduation diploma course in community medicines.

Today's topic is the importance of vaccination.

Vaccination is a biological molecule which is injected either through the injections, orally or through sprays. This helps us to create immunity against most of the infections.

Why vaccine is so important?

Even though we try to maintain good hygiene, cleanliness, sanitation, but still we can not prevent infection and the diseases caused by such infections. Right from the birth when delivery occurs, the baby comes in contact with the environment which is highly infected. This is like TB, Tuberculosis, which is more prevelent in India and we want to save our baby. Then right from the birth, the vaccines like BCG which is helpful in developing immunity against tuberculosis.

As per the National Immunization schedule and as per the WHO, we shoul give basic immunization, also called vaccination to the baby in order to develop immunity against the diseases.

What are the reasons to vaccinate the child?

If we do not give vaccination, it is not like the baby is going to infect but we can prevent most of the infections. If we do not give vaccination, the disease or infections can cause serious consequences rather than the vaccines. Vaccines are safer because they are being evaluated through the various phases during the clinical tria;. And also when it comes in the market.

Since they are very safe, they hardly have any side effect or consequences. and if any of the serious consequence occurs due to vaccination, that happens once in millions, so that they can immediately be taken care of. And teh action is taken according to the condition. My aim to get every baby vaccinated by birth, till the age of 5 years, all the vaccines should be appropriately given according to the proper age group. And the vaccines which are given after 5 years as and when required, once should get vaccinated.

In adults, when there is endemic or epidemic for any infections, say in 2010 swine flu was there, one should get treated as early as possible and should get vaccinated so that the disease should not be reoccured. The maximum number of people get vaccinated against infections. The community get the hard immunity. Accordingly we can prevent the disease throughout the community not only the individuals. This will help our country to fight against the diseases ans the infections.

This is all the basic immunisation and the vaccinations, I talked about. There are otther infection also, such as dog bite and other infections as well which can be vaccinated.

There are so many vaccines in the trials for so many life threatning diseases. As and when you get the chance, you can discuss it with the famly physician or any other doctor.

In order to know about the different vaccines. the appropriate age groups for the vaccines, or the side effects or any other vaccine related querry.you can contact me through Lybrate.
