5 Simple Ways To Avoid Diaper Rash For Your Baby

5 Simple Ways To Avoid Diaper Rash For Your Baby
Tips to prevent irritant diaper dermatitis (diaper rash)

A mother's prime focus always is how to ensure that her child is happy and comfortable, especially when the child is too small. One of the problems which bothers many mothers who are bringing up really small children, is diaper rash. Sensitive skin, tight diaper and prolonged contact with feces and urine etc are common reasons for diaper rash or irritant diaper dermatitis.

Here are few tips to avoid diaper rash and ensuring your child is always comfortable.

1. Careful with wash: if you are using a cloth diaper, be extra careful in washing such that there is no soap remaining in the cloth.

2. Clean well: when bathing your baby, make sure you clean the area covered by diaper with a mild soap and do not rub the area while drying, since the skin is sensitive.

3. Remove soiled diaper instantly: this is the most important. However busy you are, you need to aware of the times when the diaper/cloth has been soiled. And when soiled, the diaper has to be changed at the earliest. Do not keep your baby in the diaper for all hours of the day. It is good if they are out of the diaper for some time every day.

4. Keep the diaper loose. Also, ensure that you wash the cotton diapers with fabric softeners and try to avoid wipes altogether as they have strong chemicals in them.

5. Keep a tab on rashes: if your baby does get the rashes, check with the pediatrician at the earliest. Frequent topical applications of a bland protective barrier agent (zinc oxide paste) may suffice to prevent dermatitis. There are also chances of fungal infections. Antifungal creams should be used on advice of a doctor.

Nursing Bottle Caries- Causes and Management

Certified Implantologist, Aesthetic , BDS
Dentist, Gurgaon
Nursing Bottle Caries- Causes and Management

Nursing improperly often becomes a big reason for tooth decay and caries in babies. The way out is to get the baby tooth cared for from the very first day. This form of tooth decay is associated with nursing, when the baby sucks the pacifier, or takes other sugary juices or drinks, or formula milk from a nursing bottle.

The main causes of nursing bottle caries:
The babies are often fed in nursing bottles or feeding bottles, and the bottle nipple often stays in the mouth for long; sometimes overnight also if not taken care of. Again, the babies are pacified with pacifiers, which are often dipped in honey or a sugar solution, and this again brings in more reasons for dental caries. In any of the situations described, the baby's newly formed teeth which are susceptible to all forms of decay and damages while being gentle and new can get cavities. The sugary liquids and milk can form a coating on the teeth which brings in cavities.

How to prevent the nursing caries:
The best option to prevent is not to leave the baby with the bottle or pacifier for long. Again, the pacifier or the bottle should be always washed properly, sterilized and not left in the mouth of the baby uncared, especially during sleep time, when the baby sleeps while sucking onto them.

There are some steps to follow to prevent the early tooth decay and maintain baby dental hygiene. They are:

1. Even before the first tooth comes out, massage and clean the baby's gums with a clean washcloth or soft cotton everyday, and after every long feeding.

2. You don't need toothpaste to start brushing the first few new teeth that come out. Just brush without a toothpaste and use a very soft gentle brush to form the habit. In areas where no tooth has come up, brush and massage the gums only.

  • When all the teeth have come up, start flossing everyday
  • Try to take the baby for a dental checkup at least every year if not every six months.
  • Try to cut down on the consumption of extra sweet beverages. Add some water to the fruit juice to dilute the concentration and sweetness.

All these steps mentioned are great to start healthy and good dental care and hygiene, and if you follow them well, then dental caries will be away.

I am from Bangalore, and my son is 8 years 9 months old, and he has pain just around the umbilical cord region. Checked in google. Also known as belly button pain. His pain is severe. Since 4 years. All along we had been visiting doctors thinking it could be gastric related. Very confusing what exactly is the problem. While all his organs are normal in a scan. Could it be some kind of intestinal hernia or really a gastro related problem.

There are many reasons for pain around umbilicus. One of them is non specific known as idiopathic. Since Scan is normal, it may be idiopathic, such pain disappears on its own after some time. If your son otherwise is normal, need not to worry. Just console him, you may give warm fomentation to the part. Hernia is visible on the part which can be easily detected. Gastric related problems present with other associated symptoms.

Is it compulsory to give all the vaccines to the children or the one's given by BMC in Mumbai are enough for a 2 month old baby ?

M.D.( Pediatrics), DCH
Pediatrician,
All vaccines are helpful in preventing diseases, in that sense they are preferred. BMC gives free vaccine which corporation can afford economically (by provision in budget). Rest many preparations available in the market are combination vaccines which invariably contain H.Infuenza B which is costlier hence not given by government hospitals. IPV, Rotviral, Peumococal and meningococal are more costly.Well if cost is no issue, they are all essential. It is better to give all . If it is an issue you have to discuss with local pediatrician. I personally advice IPV & HIB to most of patients. Rest is their discretion. Hope it helps.

Swallowing air is the most common reason for flatus. Try to give breast milk in sitting posture and do burping before you put on bed. If you are giving bottle feed, try to give with spoon. It solves your problem. Consult your pediatrician for learning art of burping.

While giving pentaxim vaccination to my baby (3.5m old), a few drops leaked out and only a couple of drops (1-2 drops) were injected to my baby. The nurse/doctor said it's OK. Only 1 drop is enough. Is it really enough?

Normal dose is .5 ml. Your baby will get subsequent doses. And a booster later. As of now spilage o one drop does not make a difference but you can get antibody titres checked after the booster dose is given i.e at 2 years of age. Till then nothing to worry.

My son is 15 years old. He is suffering from lymphangioma by birth. Initially it was concentrated at upper lip. Cured by surgery. Now it has spread at right eye and there is bleeding at occ. Ational times with some swelling. Is there available an effective treatment for this disease in ayurveda or any other treatment

C.S.C, D.C.H, M.B.B.S
General Physician,
No medical care has been proven effective for lymphangiomas. Lymphangioma is not responsive to radiation therapy or steroids. However, propranolol represents a potential new option, which may be of benefit even for intractable diffuse lymphangiomatosis. Antibiotics are given for secondary cellulitis.

My child is 4 year and 10 month old. I take proper oral care of him, still he has bad odour in his mouth, especially after he wakes up in the morn and in the afternoon. Can I use listerine mouth wash? please suggest.

Listerine is not a good idea. Look for other causes of halitosis. Possible causes tonsils and adenoids. Caries, constipation.

My daughters age is 11 years .she attained puberty today on 3rd October 2016. I just wanted to know what is the correct age for puberty. And what diet should be given to her in her first periods. As the bleeding is very little. Is it normal? Could you please provide me with the do's and don't for first timers.

MD - Alternate Medicine, BHMS
Homeopath, Surat
She is early in her first period. Usually girls get their first periods after 13 years of age. But nowadays getting early puberty is common. There is no need for specific diet during the menses. But make sure to gives foods like dates, jaggery, etc. Also, sometimes during menses, girls crave chocolate. It helps with the cramps. If she is having cramps, put a hot water bag on your belly to relieve pain.

Get a urine routine micro investigation to rule out any urinary bleeds. If the baby is asymptomatic then you can wait and watch for another day. If the baby cries during urination or has fever, cries irrtiable then get the investigations of urine and blood as soon as possible with a sonography. Kindly meet your pediatrician for further managment.

Bottle feeding is a very unhealthy practice for the health of your baby. You must stop it completely and gradually she will start sucking breast. Exclusive breast milk.
