Understanding different types of back pain

As you probably already know through personal experience, back pain can be very complex and difficult to accurately diagnosis and treat. There are myriad causes and contributing factors, and a wide range of possible back pain treatments that may or may not work for the same condition. This blog will outline some of the basic tenets of back pain to help you on your journey to finding and participating in a treatment approach that works for you.

Back pain is a complicated, personal experience. The level, degree, and manageability of pain is very different for every person. Some people can literally have a large herniated disc and experience no pain at all, and for others, a simple muscle strain can cause excruciating back pain that can limit one's ability to walk or even stand. Also, with some conditions, the pain can flare up from time to time and then reside, but may get worse over time. Because only you know your level of pain, your treatment will most likely be more successful if you proactively participate in making decisions about your medical care.

Many structures in your back can cause pain.
While the anatomical structure of the spine is truly a marvel in terms of its form and function, many different structures in the spine are capable of producing back pain. Moreover, the spine is a part of the body that is highly prone to injury because it is subject to many strong forces-torque and twisting, sudden jolts and daily stresses (e. G. From poor posture). Common anatomical causes of back pain include:

Slip disc

The large nerve roots that go to the legs and arms may be irritated
The smaller nerves that innervate the spine may be irritated
The large paired back muscles (erector spine) may be strained
The bones, ligaments or joints themselves may be injured
The disc space itself can be a major cause of back pain


The source of the back pain can be complex
There is a lot of overlap of nerve supply to most of the anatomical structures in the spine (discs, muscles, ligaments, etc.) which often makes it impossible for the brain to distinguish between injury to one structure versus another. For example, a torn or herniated disc can feel identical to a bruised muscle or ligament injury. For this reason, your physician will first take a thorough medical history and physical exam, discuss your symptoms and may conduct diagnostic tests (such as an x-ray or MRI scan, if indicated) in order to try to distinguish the underlying condition causing your pain.

Description of your pain is important
The type of back pain (the way you describe the pain) and the area of distribution of the pain and related symptoms is an important part in determining a back pain diagnosis, and the treatments can be very different depending on the type of pain. Three common classifications of back pain include:

Neckpain
Axial pain
Axial pain. Also called mechanical pain, axial pain is the most common cause of back pain and may present in a number of different ways (sharp or dull, constant, comes and goes, etc.). A muscle strain is a common cause of axial pain.
Referred pain. Often characterized as dull and achy, referred pain tends to move around and vary in intensity. It may radiate from the lower back into the groin, pelvis, buttock and upper thigh. Injury to any of the interconnecting sensory nerves of the lower back can cause this type of pain. As an example, degenerative disc disease may cause referred pain to the hips and posterior thighs.

Radicular pain. Often described as deep and radiating through the extremity (arm or leg), radicular pain can be accompanied by numbness and tingling or weakness. This type of pain is caused by compression, inflammation and/or injury to a spinal nerve root. Another term for radicular pain is sciatica and can be caused by such conditions as a herniated disc or spinal stenosis.

If no anatomical reason is found, your pain is still real
Frequently, even after many tests and visits to different doctors, there may be no apparent anatomical cause for back pain. However, the pain is still real. While psychological factors, such as depression and sleeplessness, will often need to be included as part of a comprehensive treatment program, it is also important to treat the pain, and there are a variety of nonsurgical care options that can help alleviate the pain.

Additionally, you should always make sure to see a qualified spine specialist for persistent back pain symptoms to check for serious medical conditions that could be causing the pain (such as tumor or infection).

Ultimately, participating in the decision-making process about your medical care should definitely help you have a better outcome, and understanding your pain is an important element of this process.

The first thing you have to do is to develop a positive attitude towards your goal. You need to understand that transforming your physique is going to take a lot of time. These things don't work that easily. It's going to take a lot of hard work and consistency. The fat that you are carrying around was accumulated in years. So how can you expect to lose it in mere days. 1.Start exercising. Start working out if you are not active. Begin with body weight exercises like push up, pull up and squats. Weight training proves to be really helpful if you want to gain good quality weight. Train each body part twice a week. For example: Monday/Thursday: Chest + Triceps Tuesday/Friday: Back + Biceps Wednesday/Saturday: Legs + Shoulders Don't forget to warm up for at least 10 - 15 minutes. Warm up includes jumping, rope skipping, treadmill, cycling, stair climbing, etc.. 2.Eat Healthy. Stop drinking and smoking too much if you are indulged in it. Limit your intake of junk food and any form of sugar. Do not at all starve yourself. Make it a habit to eat something healthy every 2 - 3 hours. Some of the recommended food items are boiled chicken and eggs, brown rice, brown bread, peanut butter, olive oil (extra virgin), green tea, dry fruits etc. 3.Consume good amount of fruits and vegetables. Bananas, apples, pomegranate, green leafy vegetables. Fruits and vegetables helps in absorption of food in the body and together, completes your daily nutrition need. 4.Eat whole grains. Try to have multi grains spread throughout the day. Wheat, brown rice, oats are best sources of healthy carbohydrates but do not include these items in your dinner. 5.Increase protein intake. Protein proves to be the most essential nutrient when it comes down to gaining strength or building muscle. Therefore, consume all types of protein from both veg and non veg food items. Boiled chicken and eggs are the best sources of fat free protein. Sprouts are also rich in protein. Your Daily food intake should ideally consist of – a. Have plenty of nuts, dry fuits and seeds. Almonds, walnuts, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, figs, dates and raisins. They are full of healthy fats needed by a human body. B. Good amount of fruits and vegetables – Bananas, apples, pomegranate, green leafy vegetables. Fruits and vegetables helps in absorption of food in the body and together, completes your daily nutrition need. C. If you are a non- vegetarian - Eat eggs, chicken etc. D. Eat whole grains – Try to have multi grains spread throughout the day. Wheat, brown rice, oats, bajra, daliya etc should be taken in multiple meals in a day. E. Eat Sprouts – Chana and moong which are full of protein and nutrients. F. You can supplement your diet with good quality multi-vitamin capsules. If you are lacking in protein, you can buy a high quality whey protein and have it with banana shake twice a day. G. You can take natural food items like wheat grass which is full of essential nutrients which helps in weight gain. Try to be patient while you are on the process of weight gain. Results take time to show. Just follow this regimen and you will soon start seeing the results.

Dear lybrate user, masturbation should not be done for more than twice in a week. Sperm cells are being continuously produced inside human testis. A single sperm cell needs about 4 months to mature before being ejaculated. Masturbating ejaculates many mature as well as immature sperm & results in the temporary deficit of sperm count. This loss of sperm results in the increased production of sperm. A sperm is mainly made up of protein. An increased production of sperm count needs a steady supply of protein. This supply of protein is met from the amount of protein we intake daily. Over masturbation increases the rate of production of sperm to such extent that the demand for protein cannot be fulfilled naturally & it often results in breakdown of protein from muscle tissues. This breakdown of muscle tissues is externally manifested as fatigue, weakness etc. Addiction to masturbation denotes that you are continuously indulged in sexual thoughts. This type of thoughts is common in people who live a sedentary life. If you really have a sedentary life-style you should get yourself out from it immediately. Socialize yourself. Dear lybrate user, pimples/ acne vulgaris is a chronic inflammatory skin disease which develops due to blocking of the hair follicles in skin. These blockages occur due to 4 abnormal processes: 1) excess sebum production due to androgens 2) excessive deposition of the protein keratin leading to comedone formation 3) infection of propionibacterium acnes (p. Acnes) bacteria on the hair follicles 4) local release of pro-inflammatory chemicals in the skin. In order to stop the formation of pimples the aforesaid four causes should be terminated. Now the bitter truth is neither can you stop the overproduction of androgen or keratin protein nor can you stop the release of pro-inflammatory chemicals because all these processes takes place internally in your skin. However you can stop the accumulation of p. Acnes bacteria on your skin by preventing your skin from getting oily. Always keep a handkerchief with you whenever you go outside. Hello apply prasarini oil or pranacharya restopain oil on your affected part and give hot water fomentation .take yograj guggul and agni tundi vati after lunch and dinner with warm water. Take maha rasnadi kwath 2-2 tsf twice a day. Take pranacharya vatari capsule and syrup twice a day. Avoid fermented food. Junk food.

Please note that you are developing gastric ulcer -- please do a usg whole abdomen & endoscopy to diagnose the case. Take food in time and a balance diet. Take colocynth 30 - twice daily for next 2 weeks.

Age is 75 years, there is pus in urine and creatinine shows 3.8 few days back which reduce to 3.1 then 2.3 and now its is 1.9 till date. There is bit swelling in kidney and bladder is full of pus. Which has been seen thru cystoscopy and removed from bladder. Is there any need to go for dj standing? Thanks.

Treat the dandruff first then your hair fall will automatically come under control. Warm coconut oil 2 tsp + vinegar 1 tsp - apply to the scalp, massage gently with finger tips for five minutes and then wash it off after an hour with a herbal anti dandruff shampoo. Do this on alternate days. Avoid exposure to dust and pollution. Wear a scarf/cap if you are going out so that your scalp is protected from dust eat plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables. They act as blood purifiers and thus they promote hair regrowth once you are dandruff free apply almond oil + castor oil combo to your scalp for hair regrowth.

Hi, As our scalp hair grow at speed of 1cm to 1.5cm per month which varies from person to person. Even if one takes extra care, healthy & nutritious diet, the possibility in 2months duration (maximum to maximum) would be up to 3cm in 2months. So, I would suggest you to follow the below points along with other option of 'Hair Extensions'. Hair Extensions are bunch of hair which can be clipped or attached to your existing hair to give the length, volume and density. Visit a good and renowned clinic or hair studio where you can get good quality of hair extensions which looks natural and would find colour and texture of your hair. Take diet rich in protein like non-veg, eggs (it's loaded with essential nutrients such as proteins, vitamin b12, iron, zinc and omega 6 fatty acids in large amounts and biotin), different pulses & legumes, sprouts, nuts (sp. Walnuts and almonds); iron-rich food like green vegetables, dates, carrots, prunes, green peas; also oats, shrimp, take flaxseeds, sunflower seeds, sesame seeds, green tea, soyabean, fruits, salads, etc. Take low-fat dairy products (they also contain whey and casein, two high-quality protein sources) take proper 6-9hrs of sound sleep. Hye, Thanks for the query. Firstly it is important to understand that weight /fat loss involves sensible eating. You have to eat the right foods at the right time. Eat small but frequent meals.     Reduce your main meals by 1/4th  the amount. Take a glass of lime water 10minutes before meals. Avoid long gaps in between meals. Avoid junk as far as possible. Exercise at least 4 times a week. Lastly be committed.                        Remember it's a lifestyle change and not a one time thing.     It's a balanced intake that will last you longer. All the so called diets will only give you muscle and bone loss. The fats will remain as it is. So, try to first follow this seemingly simple tips.

Dear doc, Of late I've got throat infection and days passing by it subsided but followed up with ulcers over and beneath the tongue till throat. Feeling pain under left jaw and tonsil swelling. Nothing can supply ant moisture from outside. It has to come from within. Circulating blood is the only carrier to bring moisture to the skin. Therefore it is necessary to open up the capillaries near the skin. T achieve there are two ways. First and very effective is a steam bath. To know the procedure pl ask a private question. I will send you the procedure which you can do at home. The second is less effective but works a bit slowly. Buy a plastic brush which has about 1" long flexible bristles. Rub your entire skin with it when it is wet during your daily bath. Do it for a week every day and then on alternate days. After a couple of months you can stop it. You can do it again for a few days if you need it, or once every week. This will give you a glowing skin which will be owners pride and neighbors envy. And you will not need any cream, du, lotion etc.

Hello, this may be because of acidity/ indigestion/ gas you can take(if no drug allergy): 1. Tablet Meftal spas one tablet stat after food 2. Tablet Pantocid 40 mg before food once a day for 2-3 days. And follow care advises given below. Avoid food from outside, junk, fried, spicy fatty food take home made light food like moong dal, Dalia, chapatti also tell me associated symptoms like vomiting sensation, loose motion/ burning sensation in chest or any other symptoms are present or not? so that we can reach diagnosis. Kindly see a physician for further management
